A hostage-taker in southern France has been killed in a police raid, Interior Minister Gérard Collomb confirmed Friday. The Islamic State group claimed responsibility on a jihadist website for the attack, which left at least two people dead.
What we know so far:
The Islamic State group has claimed responsibility for the hostage-taking in Trèbes on a jihadist website, FRANCE 24’s expert on Islamist groups, Wassim Nasr, confirms.
The suspect, 26-year-old Redouane Lakdim, was killed in a police raid, Interior Minister Gérard Collomb said. He was known to the authorities as a petty criminal.
At least two people were killed and dozens wounded in the supermarket attack, according to French police.
Lakdim had demanded the release of November 13, 2015, Paris attacks suspect Salah Abdeslam.
A third victim was shot and killed earlier in the day when Lakdim stole a car in the nearby city of Carcassonne, injuring the driver and killing a passenger.
Speaking from Brussels, French President Emmanuel Macron said the hostage-taking in Trèbes appeared to be a terrorist attack and that he would be returning to Paris within hours to coordinate the government’s response.

Arnaud Beltrame, the French police officer who traded himself for a woman hostage and discreetly left his cell phone on so the cops outside could hear what was going has died of his wounds today. Not only did he protect the woman hostage, he most certainly saved many other lives by helping the cops to know when to rush the supermarket.
