Iranian Foreign Minister Zarif: Israel ‘will see the response’ if they act against Iran

MUNICH, Germany — Iran’s foreign minister told NBC News that the recent shooting down of an Israeli fighter jet had destroyed the “myth of invincibility” that surrounded Israel’s military for decades.

After “30 years the Syrians were able to down one of its planes,” Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif told NBC News in an exclusive interview on the sidelines of the Munich Security Conference on Sunday. “And so the myth of invincibility of Israel, of the Israeli military, has crumbled.”
Last weekend’s showdown began with Israel shooting down an Iranian reconnaissance drone that Israel claimed had entered its airspace. Israel retaliated for the incursion by striking the Iranian base in Syria — Iran is one of the regime’s main backers — from which the drone was operated. A Syrian anti-aircraft missile hit one of the attacking Israeli F-16 jets, which crashed on Israeli soil after the two pilots ejected.
Zarif on Sunday responded to earlier comments from Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, who said Israel would act against Iran and reiterating his country’s position that Tehran was the world’s greatest threat.
“We will act if necessary not just against Iran’s proxies but against Iran itself,” Netanyahu said.
The Israeli prime minister theatrically held a piece of what he said was the Iranian drone that entered Israeli airspace earlier this month, while telling the Munich Security Conference: “Israel will not allow the regime to put a noose of terror around our neck.”
Zarif said Sunday, “Well, if they try to exercise that threat, they will see the response.”

Israel and Syria have technically been at war since 1948, but signed a disengagement agreement in 1974. Since the start of the civil war some seven years ago, Israel has periodically bombed targets in Syria but the incident last weekend culminated in the largest set of Israeli airstrikes against Syrian air defenses since the 1982 Lebanon War. The strikes also hit several Iranian positions in Syria.
Zarif also reiterated that his country would not be the first renounce the landmark nuclear deal between between Iran and six world powers, including the United States, even if the U.S. does.
“I believe President Trump has tried to walk away from that deal from Day 1 of his presidency, and he has done everything in bad faith to prevent Iran from enjoying the deal already,” he said.

On the presidential campaign, then-candidate Trump criticized the nuclear agreement, calling it “the worst deal ever,” and promised to tear it up.
National Security Adviser H.R. McMaster at the Munich conference Saturday urged the international community not to do business with Iran because, he said, profits would go toward funding the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps, an elite branch of the Iranian military.
“We believe that a large percentage of the Iranian economy is controlled by the Revolutionary Guards,” McMaster said. He also pressed action against the nation’s “network of proxies.”
“So the time is now, we think, to act against Iran,” McMaster said.

Zarif Sunday called the comments a “violation of the deal,” adding “that doesn’t mean the deal is broken. The deal is standing because the deal is supported by the international community….”
Since coming to power, the president has extended key waivers that were lifted under the agreement, while also continuing to oppose the deal. He has also said he would work with European allies to remove so-called “sunset clauses” that allow Iran to gradually resume advanced nuclear activities in the next decade.
In contrast to Trump, America’s European allies support the agreement and say it is working.
Trump has also supported targeted sanctions for human rights abuses and ballistic missile development. The Treasury Department’s action hits 14 Iranian officials and companies and businessmen from Iran, China and Malaysia, freezing any assets they have in the U.S. and banning Americans from doing business with them.
Israel is also sharply critical of the agreement, as is Saudi Arabia’s government. Both see Iran as a major regional threat.
Meanwhile, the Munich Security Conference’s head of policy and analysis said that he left the gathering “even more worried than before.”
Tobias Bunde tweeted that “when people who don’t spend much time with world politics ask whether it is as bad as the media say I now respond: No, it’s actually worse.”

Read T.E. Lawrence’s “Revolt In The Desert” or watch the ’62 movie “Lawrence of Arabia” which is taken from the book. The scenes of ragheads attempting to counter aircraft while horseback with small arms fire is telling. Also, the problems of confused loyalties among the Arabs then are no different than today. It is necessary to asses situations properly and act accordingly. There is no rote procedure to do this, it is necessary to take each situation and look at it for what it is, not what someone would like it to be.

Iranian Women are protesting the repressive Islamist laws. They are sick of the forced Hijab, Sharia law, and Sharia slavery. Sharia police monitoring them constantly for what they wear, what they say, what they drink, where they go, and what kind of relationships they have.
During the protests in Iran, have Western feminists issued a simple statement of support for these extraordinary women, let alone take any concrete actions to help them.?
If you want to see true feminists, these women are the real promoters of women’s rights: they are risking their lives. They are not just uttering silly slogans from their safe spaces.

Benjamin Netanyahu is a superb speaker in Munich and love that he asked Zarif if he recognized and held a piece of the Iranian drone that Israel destroyed lol lol!!!!
Israel has technology that Iran can only dream about.
Folks seem to forget that Israel has more “stuff” that they have never allowed the rest of the world to know about……they are not a bunch of blabber mouths. Who knows what they may have to help keep them safe.
Its time to turn S. Lebanon into a parking lot. A half million missiles pointing at tiny Israel is certainly excuse enough.

Who owns these networks? If I owned a Network and they were doing this I would use my influence to have it stopped. Who are the large stockholders of NBC….I am aware they are owned by General Electric but who is allowing this is my question.

One downed aircraft does not a victory make, to paraphrase an old saying. Don’t forget, Israel still holds territory it captured in the ’67 Six Day War when its Arab neighbors got a little too adventurous.

One plane downed in 30 years not much of a record! And the pilots survived. The Nazis shot down hundreds of allied bombers in WW2 and killed about 50,000 crew members (not counting USSR losses) but they still lost in the end.

As I have been given to understand that in response to the drone, Israel destroyed several control centers and the launching point of that drone. Syria then put upwards of 25 high-tech anti-aircraft missiles. One got close enough to damage a plane so it had to limp back to Israel where it crashed. The pilots needed medical attention, but they are home.
Israel lost one plane. Syria depended on those high tech missiles, but they did not work as advertised. What happens next is not up to Israel. Do the Syrians learn that they are tools and a buffer for Iran? Iran does not mind using them as fodder. Assad wants to keep his power. He thinks he is a king who inherited his position from his father. Well, that sure as hell isn’t very democratic, is it?

It’s more than a bit naive, and unduly one-sided, to bash NBC and other news outlets for doing what they are supposed to do — bringing us news and views from both sides of any issue of public concern — while ignoring the Trump administration’s confused response to Iranian threats against Israel. What, are you folks expecting NBC to do the Adulting here? To do the Presidenting here? That’s Trump’s job. And if Tillerson’s sad performance in Beirut recently is any indication, Trump is still under the mis-impression that the Lebanese government actually exists and is our ALLY in the war on terrorism, instead of being (as it is) a wholly-owned subsidiary of Hezbollah and, hence, of Iran. It is insane that Trump keeps feeding advanced weapons the Lebanese army; they go straight to Hezbollah, to be used against Israel eventually, and, for the moment, to be used against US-backed rebel forces in Syria. I’m not saying Obama did any better, but at least he had a coherent strategy, though it was one I disagreed with. Trump and his team don’t seem to know which end is up, except when they luck into doing the right thing by sheer luck and gut instinct, like with the Jerusalem-capital issue. But even a broken clock is right twice a day.
