A judge in France just ruled that a prominent Islamic scholar arrested and jailed on preliminary rape charges must stay behind bars.
The ruling was apparently fueled by the recommendations of the prosecutor’s office.
The case involves Tariq Ramadan, who was placed under investigation just a few days ago for incidents that allegedly occurred in 2009 and 2012.

I blinked at the AP headline. It is so rare to see justice done to the wealthy and powerful, especially someone who has for so long been the darling of the political and media elites, I couldn’t believe it at first. Ramadan will still likely skate: there are too many well-placed Muslim Brotherhood operatives and sympathizers in the government of France, and governments all over the West, for any other outcome to be likely. Still, the thought of him behind bars must bring some small comfort to his accusers, who have detailed far greater horrors to which he subjected them.
It is useful to remember that some people knew for years about Tariq Ramadan’s behavior. Bernard Godard, who was the “Monsieur Islam” of the French Ministry of the Interior and knew Ramadan well, said: “That he had many mistresses, that he consulted sites, that girls were brought to the hotel at the end of his lectures, that he invited them to undress, that some resisted and that he could become violent and aggressive, yes, but I have never heard of rapes, I am stunned.”
Why didn’t Godard act, knowing that “some” of the women whom Tariq Ramadan “invited to undress…resisted and that he could become violent and aggressive”? You know the answer: “Monsieur Islam” was afraid of being smeared as an “Islamophobe.” Tariq Ramadan’s entire rise to positions of influence and power can be attributed solely and wholly to his pose as a “Muslim reformer,” and to the Western intelligentsia’s avid desire to showcase such people in order to show that they are not “Islamophobic,” and are on board with the diversity/multiculturalism project. His rise certainly cannot be attributed to his wisdom and insight.

A French judge decided on Tuesday to keep prominent Islamic scholar Tariq Ramadan in detention, four days after he was handed preliminary rape charges in cases alleged by women who sought his counsel.
A judicial official, who wasn’t authorized to speak publicly about the cases, said the decision followed the recommendation of the prosecutor’s office.
Ramadan was placed under investigation on Feb. 2 for an alleged rape resulting from a 2009 encounter and for the alleged rape of a vulnerable person in a 2012 case. Both women filed the complaints last year.
Ramadan, in custody since Jan. 31, denies any wrongdoing.
Ramadan had sought to buy some time before the judge ordered him kept in decision, saying last week after being charged that he wanted to postpone the required “debate” before any decision on remaining in jail. The tactic apparently didn’t work.
Ramadan, 55, is on leave from Britain’s Oxford University, where he is a professor of contemporary Islamic studies. He travels frequently and has written numerous books on Islam and the integration of Muslims in Europe.
It was not known how long he could remain locked up. Under French law, the order to hold him in “provisional detention” can last one year and include two consecutive six-month renewals thereafter. However, a suspect’s time in custody can be cut short at any time if a judge agrees detention is no longer warranted….
The judicial official said that in ordering Ramadan to remain in jail, the judge was either weighing the well-being of the women behind the case or assuring that the scholar does not leave France while the investigation is in progress. …

The French should be kind with Mr Ramadan (what a name) because he misunderstood his religion. In the meantime, behind bars, harden French criminals will rape him on a daily basis. Where I live he was already shot dead.

Well done France. Note that he is a professor in a British university, where he was no doubt welcomed with open arms. I wonder if a British court would have dared to jail a prominent Muslim like him because of the PC/Islamophobic backlash??

Mr Spencer should apply to take over his job. While I think RS is mistaken in his “Did M exist?” book he is still infinitely better qualified than Ramadaft.

Qur’an 18:86: On what proof or evidence do you base your suspicion that Robert Spencer was mistake in the conclusion he reached in his book, Did Muhammad Exist? Have you done the same amount and quality of research that he did for that book? Or are you afraid that if Spencer is right about Muhammad, the same could be true of the Jesus of the Bible and all of the other prophets of all the other religions?

Yes!

I have no reason to be “afraid” as I am an atheist who believes only in the Noble verse 18:86 (lol..!).
My suspicion is that all these asserted historical people have substantial basis in fact, though with occasional inaccuracies. For instance a strong case was made by a notable friend of mine that Judas betrayed “the wrong person” (i.e. not JC) and hence the two women did indeed see him alive on the Sunday, before JC hotfooted off along the road to Emmaus before his enemies could catch on. (Ironically this would mean that that bit of the quran is actually correct, probably the only thing true in the entire rant!)
My case for the existence of M, I don’t have time or space to put it all here, am currently preparing a document on the matter with ref to RS’s book. But I am currently v busy with more immediate tedious matters of health and housing. I would love to be able to indulge time on history/religion/politics instead.
But will say there are considerable mis-inferences in RS’s book, and above all, his expertise is v narrow. Not least, RS’s thesis leaves a huge “it just so happened” of why there was this huge rush of jihadism out of Arabia at that time. According to RS this “just” “mysteriously” happened. By contrast, the believers’ own account is all too true-to-life and rational (a rare thing in Islam!). You couldn’t make up such an accurate portrayal of a vile psychopath and (crucially) HOW he was able to start such a HUGE revolution of history. And it is very obvious to anyone educated in psychiatry (rather than just religions) that the author of the quran was severely affected with communication disability which is characteristic of Asperger syndrome (marginal autism). The Q and H and S do not resemble genuine myths but instead betray too many signs of authenticity.
Unfortunately once a person has published a mistake, and is famous for it, they are very resistant to changing their minds. Meanwhile the vast majority of knowledgable Islam-critics concur that M did exist, not least David Woods. It’s sad that RS has got himself up this gumtree because so much else he has done is so good. As one amazon reviewer said, it regrettably undermines his wider cred. Cheers Akbar!

nah. the french don’t have guts. it’s just that everyone is leaving france. well, fleeing actually. even the anti semitic french are so upset that paris is a pissoir for the arabs right under their noses as it were, they have taken to the streets in outrage and forgotten in all the hoopla to write it’s all the fault of the choos on their signs.

The British have shown cowardice time & again with the followers of the – religion of tolerance & peace – that I simply cannot imagine any of the WIGGED JACKASSES doing anything like this !

This will undermine the credibility of his denials. Remember the case in New York where a hotel chambermaid accused a very high profile foreign Banker of rape? It was found in her examination by police that she had lied about some details. The case had to be dropped. It would never have succeeded in court.

That is a lie harassed by Australian students that cannot be believed,when I first heard of Muslims in our schools it was they who were harassing and threatening very young vulnerable children to the extent that they refused to leave their homes in the mornings to go to school the bullying was so bad.It was traumatic for the mothers who had never had to deal with bullying in Australian schools on that scale before.
