A Berkeley City Council member has been accused of fueling the firing of a Transportation commission member because he wouldn’t publicly state support for the BDS movement — the campaign to divest from companies that do business with Israel.
Specifically, Transportation Commissioner Ben Gerhardstein wouldn’t say what his position on BDS was, and that angered Cicy Council member Cheryl Davila.
So Davila, apparently, dismissed him from his job.

This is the sort of garden variety bigotry that BDS inevitably leads to.
A member of the Berkeley City Council has been accused of applying a political litmus test regarding support for Israel to a sitting commissioner, who was dismissed when he did not provide a sufficient answer.
According to a Dec. 14 article in Berkeleyside, Cheryl Davila, who was elected to the Berkeley City Council last year, dismissed Transportation Commissioner Ben Gerhardstein last month after he declined to state a position on whether Berkeley should divest from companies that do business with Israel.
Gerhardstein, who was appointed by a former City Council member, provided Berkeleyside with an email chain backing up his assertion.
“You indicated that a non-transportation issue was important to you in selecting a transportation commissioner,” Gerhardstein wrote to Davila on Nov. 27 after he had been removed from the commission. “During our first meeting, you noted that as a Human Welfare and Community Action Commissioner, you authored a recommendation to Council to divest from companies benefiting from the Israeli occupation of Palestinian territories, which raised your profile.
“You said that the issue was important to you and you asked whether I was pro-Palestinian (and supported divestment) or a Zionist. You noted that you were asking all potential District 2 commissioners this question and suggested that you were only interested in appointing divestment supporters to commissions.”
In a written response to the Berkeleyside story, Davila did not dispute the charge, but framed it as an attack on Palestinian rights.
As usual, the oppressor is really the victim.
“For this to be considered newsworthy is another reflection of the ongoing suppression campaigns to smear anyone who supports Palestine. The campaign to silence support for Palestinian rights is how I came to be a councilmember in the first place.”
That last sentence is gibberish. But the upshot is that if you object to a hater of the Jewish State firing a commissioner for not hating the Jewish State, you’re guilty of a “suppression” campaign.
Davila is an outspoken proponent of BDS, the Boycott, Divestment and Sanctions movement against Israel. According to the City of Berkeley’s published record of campaign contributions, her campaign drew financial support from local anti-Israel activists including Hatem Bazian, a lecturer at the University of California, Berkeley, and founder of Students for Justice in Palestine who currently is under fire for anti-Semitic tweets from earlier this year.
And has a long history of anti-Semitism.

Looks like little Ms. Davila missed the training on employee rights, in particular CA Labor Code sec 1101-1102 which prohibit discrimination and/or retaliation based on political activity. Let’s hope the Commish sues her commie ass back to whatever third world hellhole she crawled out of.

In Mubarak’s Egypt a Coptic Christian was arrested and imprisoned for blogging support of Israel (as reported right here on pamleageller.com), whatever happened to him I never found out because shortly thereafter the Arabpig Spring happened. Isn’t it interesting how as muslums come to have political power anywhere, their unique brand of fascism comes to the fore?

I remember Berkeley in 1964 … It was a beautiful place. I don’t remember one side street that was dirty, abandoned, decayed, or ruined. … Exactly the sort of place Leftists love to bleep – and they did. Last time I was there, which was during the Carter years, I didn’t even get out of the car. .- Didn’t want to take my life in my hands.

No. Berserkeley was a lost cause decades ago. … It was a beautiful place full of laid-back Californians. My father and I drove up there all the time to visit his friends. But then along came the Vietnam war – and the Left went nuts – anyone who did not support the genocidal maniacs in North Vietnam was a baby killer. … Fast forward twenty-years, and it became a Leftard city frozen in time.
The last time I set foot in the city, it was well on its way to becoming a loony bin. Dirty and decaying everywhere off the beaten path. The sort of place you lock your car door and keep driving through no matter what you see. And praying to your God for the car to make it out. Sort of like Oakland next door, but with a large Upper Class set of districts around the University and up in the hills. The University itself, the homes of the Leftist rich, and the toney shopping still look great, but I wouldn’t risk my life going there, nor would I waste my time. …
