Muslim Students at Catholic University Complain Christmas Gets Too Much Attention

Story continues below advertisementMuslim students who knew they were enrolling into a Catholic university are now expressing dismay that come Christmas time, the campus is decorated for the holiday season. They want Islamic holidays to receive the same attention even though they represent just a small fraction of the entire student population.
Loyola University Chicago is 60% Catholic and 40% a mixture of other religions, including other Christian denominations, Jewish, etc. The individual categories aren’t broken down. However, out of a total of 16,673 students for this academic year, only about 800 Muslims are enrolled. That’s less than 5%, yet, they want their traditions to be represented equally.
A piece in the Loyola Phoenix, written by Sajedah Al-khzaleh, makes the plea:
It’s that time of year again, and Loyola has decked out its buildings with decorations for the holiday season. But Christmas gets more attention on campus than other religious holidays.
Although Loyola fosters a space for non-Christian religions to practice their faith — such as in the Damen Student Center’s second floor of Ministry Offices for Muslim, Hindu and Jewish students — there is a lack of public festivity compared to Christmas, such as decorations and activities of other religions’ holidays the entire student body could be part of.
A 19-year-old Muslim student and a prayer coordinator for the terror-tied Muslim Student Association, Sajid Ahmed, said he likes the Christmas decorations around campus, but “wishes Muslim holidays were just as prominent.”
The entire campus is invited to a Christmas tree lighting ceremony, while Muslim students must celebrate in private without seeing the campus transformed into a Middle Eastern wonderland, the complaint continues.
“For someone who lives far away and doesn’t have the opportunity to meet up with family, I would say making Loyola’s Eid as festive as possible would be great so that [Muslim students] can feel connected with their heritage and with their religion,” said Ahmed. “I think if the leadership is exposed to the Muslim voice, the voice who wants to make campus more festive for other holidays, I think that’s definitely one step.”
Loyola’s associate director of the student complex, Bryan Goodwin, said that the school already tries to be more inclusive of other religions by decorating with secular icons like Santa Claus and ice rinks and by avoiding the phrase “Merry Christmas.” Goodwin said if any religious group requests a celebration, they could be accommodated.
So, even with a traditionally Catholic school turning its back on its foundations and using watered-down Christmas decorations, Muslims aren’t satisfied. Like they say, give a Muslim an inch, and they’ll destroy every mile. Same goes for leftist academia.

Well I agree Christmas gets too much attention- and, shucks, it wouldn’t surprise me one bit if Pamela secretly agrees.
Admittedly, I arrive at that conclusion by very different reasoning than these Moslems. I see it as a commercial colossus, which aspect of the holiday should be replaced by New Year’s and leave the relatively minor, theologically speaking, Christmas as a religious observance. Easter, the Christian adaptation of Passover, albeit with a quite different meaning, is the most significant Christian holiday. Why, in parts of the USA in the 19th century, Christmas celebrations were outlawed.
Nevertheless, Pamela’s underlying message, that here is just another example of Moslems seeking to impose their preferences on others- sometimes even on pain of death- rings true.

Hello, litty. In what states (you referenced 19th Century) was Christmas “outlawed”. I realize that Puritans made it against standing order to celebrate, or make merry, Christmas. However, that was WELL before the nineteenth century. Why do you continue to humiliate yourself time, after time, after time. I’m not complaining .. I think the Senate version of the new tax bill has the provision that if the school takes fed funding for students (like guaranteed student loans) their endowment is taxable, maybe it’s income on their endowment — I am not sure of the details. But if they don’t take such fed money, the endowment remains non-taxable.
Schools with big endowments could start refusing this funding. Does Loyola have a big endowment?

In my opinion, it’s beyond reason to “fast” during the day, and “feast” at night. It’s only like working third shift. There is no real fast, except to do violence toward those who don’t submit to islam. It’s easier to eat three meals during the day, and to sleep at night like the rest of us.

My child was considering Loyola for college, and we went to an open house there, since that school is pretty good for some curriculums. But it’s not that traditional a Catholic school – it’s just as screwed up as any state university.
What I saw disturbed me, as far as some of the student organizations on a Catholic campus, such as GTBL, Muslims, etc. and even some of the introductory/welcome to Loyola presentations talking about “inclusivity & diversity”; seeming hitting all the liberal buzzwords.
I really wanted to stand up and point out where they were wrong, but I probably would’ve been kicked off campus. I figured it would be easier to tell my child where a lot of these groups go wrong.

Allah is God. Just like Jehovah is God. They use a different name than we do. They also believe in the Tora, the Psalms, the Gospel, and another portion of the Bible. What they do not believe is you have to accept Christ as the Son of God in order to go to heaven. They believe that Jesus is the most revered of the prophets. They believe the only way to paradise is through Allah (God himself) and any other way to believe is heresy and punishable by death. They believe they, not the tribes of Israel, are the chosen ones by God. I believe they descended from Ishmael, the first son, by the handmaiden Hagar, albeit illegitimate of Abraham. In Genesis God tells Abraham he would bless Ishamel but the child produced by Abraham and Sarah was the covenant between Abraham and Himself. It has been a fight ever since.

I have a friend that is Muslim and we have interesting discussions. We both believe in God. She believes that Jesus was born of the virgin Mary but was the highest of prophets, more so than Muhammed. I believe the way to heaven is through Jesus Christ, the son of God. She believes the only way to heaven is the Allah, God. Both of us believe the other is destined for Hell because of the other’s beliefs, but we are not ugly to one another.

securing food preparation jobs for Muslims. They increase pressure on
supermarket chains to feature it on their shelves—along with threats for
failure to comply (United States, Switzerland, Sweden). At this point,
Muslims work to get the ruling government to allow them to rule
themselves under Sharia, or Islamic law. (England, Netherlands,
Philippines).
When Muslims reach 10 percent of the population, they increase
lawlessness as a means of complaint about their conditions (Paris—car
burning). Any non-Muslim action that offends Islam will result in
uprisings and threats (Amsterdam, Denmark—Mohammed cartoons, murder of
Theo van Gogh).
After reaching 20 percent of a population expect hair-trigger rioting,
Jihad militia formations, sporadic killings and church and synagogue
burning (Indonesia, Ethiopia).
After 40 percent you find widespread massacres, chronic terror attacks and ongoing militia warfare (Bosnia, Chad).

You can find various sources for these numbers, but they’re all basically the same.
And it’s GOT to be getting there in the U.S.
In ’09 I spent about 9 months in Wilmington NC, and the local news station broadcast a poll taken ONLY by Muslims.
1 in 4, that’s 25% of an American Muslim population, said they WOULDN’T report a Muslim terrorist plot if they knew about it.
Now if you consider taqiyya, that means of that 75% that said no, there had to be plenty who were outright lying to our faces about reporting a plot, and also the usual number of people too scared to admit the truth.
All in all, I’d bet good money at least HALF the American Muslim population wouldn’t report knowing about a plot, and since the FBI found out 80% of all American mosques had radical literature, it wouldn’t surprise me if the number was closer to the 80%.

Why are mooslimes even attending a catholic college, or any Christian school, except to cause problems. When I went to Catholic school, many years ago, only Catholic parishioner’s children could attend. But money and pc have taken over everything, so sad. It’s time for mc(moral correctness) and no more pc.

The violence and death in Chicago….now Muslims trying to stop a religious university from celebrating Christmas? How does anyone even think of living there?
Sounds to me like people need to start removing the Governor and Rahm Emanuel before Illinois becomes the death camp of islam…..I’ve long since decided never to travel above the Mason Dixon Line again…..but even the South, the Northwest, and the South West are slowly getting “infected” by Globalism…..which is a prelude to Fascism and domination of our great and beautiful country…..

They deliberately enrolled to begin the process of DEMANDS to recognize what they consider to be their superior religion. They will make strong demands and EXPECT the University to SUBMIT to them. It starts out a little, then they will demand prayer time and disrupt class schedules, then they will accuse the University of being Islamophobic. Muslims all over the world now are committed to the destruction of Christianity.
