Israel Chess Federation says it may take legal action after players barred from travelling to speed chess championship

Israeli players have been denied visas to participate in a speed chess championship hosted by Saudi Arabia this week, a vice-president of the World Chess Federation (Fide) has said.
Seven Israeli players had requested visas for the tournament, taking place from 26-30 December. It would have been the first time Saudi Arabia had publicly hosted Israelis, as the Gulf state does not recognise Israel and there are no formal ties between them.
The Fide vice-president, Israel Gelfer, speaking in Athens where the body’s secretariat is based, said visas for the Israeli players “have not been issued and will not be issued”.
He said the tournament would go ahead as planned. It was not immediately clear whether other delegations had been excluded but players from Qatar had suggested they may have been rejected.
Saudi Arabia’s Centre for International Communication said in a statement that more than 180 players would participate, but it did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
Lior Aizenberg, a spokesman for the Israel Chess Federation, said efforts were still being made “by various parties” to allow Israeli players to take part.
“The event is not a world championship if they prevent chess players from several countries from taking part,” Aizenberg said. “Every chess player should have the right to participate in an event on the basis of professional criteria, regardless of their passports, their place of issue or the stamps they bear.”
Aizenberg said Fide should ensure Israeli players could compete in international events and that the Israeli federation was considering all options, including legal action and holding an international competition in Israel for players excluded from the Saudi match.
In November, Fide said it was undertaking a “huge effort” to ensure all players were granted visas.

Why be embarrassed by a bunch of chessboard-toting Jews? Almost reminds one of the embarrassment Jesse Owens provided to Uncle Adolf in the 1930’s.

The point of my post was twofold
1) Not all Muslims are non chess players
2) Free plug for my favourite web site chess.com
Too many contributors to this and other sites are intolerant and abusive and this approach has doubtful value. I too am guilty of mindless slander at times. though were we a little more reasoned in our comments perhaps some muslims might listen to the arguments. Unsure why you felt the need to be a di*k.

Some people require more pressure to say what they really think rather than throwing out some ambiguous one liner that cannot be interpreted. You have a valid point. Can’t say I buy it. When 85% of polled muslims are ok with harming and/or killing gays, support jihad and the killing of infidels (even though they do so for others, not themselves) I can’t say I buy that argument. When I start to see “reasonable” muslims protesting the killing of non-muslims and surviving themselves, your argument will begin to have foundation in my opinion. Interfacing with one over the net over a chessboard does not speak for very many muslims.
As for your hypocrisy in calling me a d*ck, I leave that for you to work out

And that completely exonerates your vulgarity? At any rate, I did read your reply, in context, but found it lacking in pertinence to the subject matter of the article which glossed over the facts of the conversation. I regret if my reply, in context to yours, was too brutal, but, perhaps for enlightening conversation we should develop habits where more thought is revealed than simple one liners. I was thinking that you were suggesting that all muslims were good as opposed to simply saying you had found a few that could set up a chess board. My apologies.

OK. I have read the Koran and consider it the most vile book I have come across. It has nothing to do with God. It is blasphemous violent sexually perverse and evil. It is based entirely on lies and is essentially incomprehensible.
Mohammad is quite possibly the worst human ever documented. It is however Islam I despise not Moslems.
Australia aborts 90000 babies each year. That is way more than any deaths due to Islam in this country. I will not judge those individual women though consider abortion a grave sin. Ditto with individual Muslims. Better I reckon to try to judge the sin not the sinner.
The baby killing women have grown in a society that has told them it is OK . Muslims grow in a culture that says it is OK to kill Jews and Christians and anyone who does not subscribe to Islam.
Among the reasons I do not support much of the hatred that I read here is that any Muslim looking for a way out of Islam will see too much ‘kill all Muslims’ and ‘Muslims are so stupid they couldn’t even set up a chessboard’ stuff. Pointless and stupid venting. I do prefer rational commentaries that seek solutions and practical ideas on how individuals can make a difference on helping convert Muslims. These (hateful) comments will only turn inquiring minds away.
You pegged me correctly re my hypocrisy as many of my posts are pigeonholing all muslims and I have gotten carried away.
As for my vulgarity. We do that in Aus and would be considered far less offensive that in the US.Apologies to you though.

Half or more of the great world chess champions were Jewish (some of them I haven’t been able to ascertain).

My neighbor, a middle-aged Jewish man, plays chess without looking at or being anywhere near the board. His partner calls out his move, and my neighbor then calls out his. He always wins. He’s been written up in the local new many times.

Just look at the numbers of Christians and churches in the West who have become apostates and rejected God and His moral law, choosing to become cultural marxists instead. The successful encroachment of Islam in the West is a direct result of that.

That is not what a simple google search revealed. It said it was invented by the Indians or Persians. Then later adopted by the muslim world. Then later moved on to Europe where it came into being in it’s current form. Sorry to burst your bubble but muslims did not invent it. They have invented nothing but a more vile form of barbarism.

I suggest you do a more thorough google search. The muslims adopted chess from the Persians after they conquered them. Before that the Persians were Zoroastrians. Much different than Islam. Mohammed would have never allowed chess. It would have taken to much time away from his quranic rambling, raping, rampaging, pillaging, murdering, dismembering, and torture. Games would be a distraction from the will of Allah.

By banning Jewish chess players- who are very strong players – they essentially invalidate the competition. Winning there will be considered meaningless.
Banning strong groups or countries from any international competition makes the competition meaningless and the results unimpressive. Keep religion or politics out of them.

If the World Chess Federation were legitimate, it would have boycotted the event which has now degraded into a competition between mediocre racists and self absorbed opportunists of little character. Nothing exceptional about it.
