Canadian University Feeds the False Muslim Victimhood Narrative

Canada’s Postmedia News reported last Tuesday that Nova Scotia’s “Dalhousie University has made ‘Emergency Hijab Kits’ available to female Muslim students at multiple locations across the Halifax campus. The fear is that female Dalhousie Muslim students are being targeted by individuals on and off campus and are having their hijabs forcibly removed….The project was a joint venture between the Dalhousie Student Union (DSU) and Nova Scotia Public Interest Research Group (NSPIRG) and launched earlier this month.”

Is Dalhousie University experiencing a wave of anti-Muslim hate crimes perpetrated against vulnerable and pious Muslimas by racist, redneck, beer-swilling, xenophobic, bigoted, “Islamophobic” yahoos? Not quite. The Postmedia News story goes on to say that “no such incidents have been reported to authorities.”

No such incidents have been reported to authorities. So why the “emergency”?

Because in the mainstream Leftist narrative, Muslims are being routinely victimized, brutalized, and discriminated against. In the absence of any evidence of this, Leftists have to make it up.

And they do.

On November 11, 2016, a student at the University of Michigan at Ann Arbor complained that a man threatened to light her on fire if she did not remove her hijab. The Detroit Free Press quoted a representative of Hamas-linked CAIR declaring that the “alleged attack is just the latest anti-Muslim incident reported since the election of Donald Trump as president.” But local police found discrepancies between the alleged victim’s statements and those of witnesses. Surveillance video also led them to conclude that the claim was false.

On December 1, 2016, a Muslim teen, Yasmin Seweid, claimed that Trump supporters on the New York City subway tried to rip off her hijab, while other subway passengers looked on and did nothing. The media uncritically reported this “harrowing” assault as a particularly egregious example of the alleged spike in anti-Muslim hate crimes. Yet in reality, “nothing happened and there was no victim,” said a police official. “We dedicated a lot of resources to this.” Seweid eventually admitted to making up the entire incident.

There are many other such incidents. In today’s victimhood-oriented culture, hate crimes are currency that can gain money and power for the putative victim. And now Dalhousie University is playing into the cynical hands of hate-crime hoaxers: “Dalhousie spokesman Janet Bryson told The Canadian Press that while the university has agreed to allow the kits, officials do not expect the kits to be used. ‘The university has not had a case where someone has had their headdress targeted,’ she said in an email. ‘Our expectation is that they won’t have to be used.’”

Then why make these kits available at all? To reinforce the idea that Muslims are victims of ongoing discrimination, persecution and harassment. This deflects attention away from jihad terror and shames those calling attention to that jihad terror as helping to create this climate of supposed victimization of Muslims.

In reality, it has just been revealed, according to Arutz Sheva, that in Canada, Jews are “the most targeted religious group, followed by Catholics and Muslims, despite perceptions of a rise in Islamophobia.” Indeed, Canada has an “anti-Islamophobia” motion, M-103, and increasing restrictions on the freedom of speech regarding examination of how jihad terrorists use the texts and teachings of Islam to justify violence and supremacism. But there is no “anti-anti-Semitism” motion. Nor does Dalhousie University or any other university in Canada have any “Emergency Kippot Kits” for Jews who are the victims of hate crimes. Now, why is that? In Germany, Jews have stopped wearing Kippot in public because of Muslim attacks. Do Canadian officials think this same thing is not going to happen in Canada? Or do they just not care?

Dalhousie University officials are being played for fools, but of course, they don’t seem to notice or care, and certainly none of their academic peers will call them to account, because they’re all being played in the same way. They are all part of the same academic establishment that has wholeheartedly endorsed the idea that honest analysis of jihadis motives is “Islamophobia” and places innocent Muslims in danger.
