U.S. Army to Allow ‘Self-Mutilators’ and Other Recruits With History of Mental Issues

50

The U.S. Army, which one maintained standards to red-flag recruits with possible mental disorders, is now opening the doors for those with histories of, say, self-mutilation, to serve in the armed forces.

This is a dramatic switch in policy.

For a limited time, the U.S. Army is accepting recruits with certain mental disorders in their medical records.

And it comes as the military branch is trying to increase its recruitment numbers, and meet new and higher quotas.

Story continues below advertisement

The Daily Caller News Foundation has more:

The move is reportedly part of a major Army drive to increase recruitment amongst its ranks and hit new quotas mandated until September 2018. It will allow candidates with a history of “self-mutilation, bipolar disorder, depression and drug and alcohol abuse.”

“The decision was primarily due to the increased availability of medical records and other data which is now more readily available,” Lt. Col. Randy Taylor told USAToday, adding that a stringent process would remain in place for recruits to receive a waiver.

“The burden of proof is on the applicant to provide a clear and meritorious case for why a waiver should be considered,” a memo obtained by USAtoday reads. The decision to allow such candidates with a history of mental health issues however could pose a risk to the future of the force. High profile incidents have involved candidates with history of such issues.

These include the case of Sgt. Bowe Bergdahl who walked off his base in Afghanistan in 2009 only to become a Taliban prisoner for 5 years. Bergdahl was freed after former President Barack Obama freed five high risk detainee’s from Guantanamo bay. U.S. Army investigators found that Bergdahl suffered from delusions and naïveté and discovered that he had been ejected from Coast Guard training in 2006 for mental health reasons. This history was not, however, reviewed prior to his enlistment.

Well we hope those people are desk jockeys, not gun toters. In today’s army, most soldiers do not carry weapons. But people with a drug/alcohol problems have long been accepted into the military … then, particularly the former, they are monitored (all “randomly” of course). Nonetheless, I don’t think I’d want to rely on a BP-I patient in combat.

That is why America needs Trump now more than ever and he is not afraid to call out the son of bitches http://bit.ly/2xuQrzi

If everyone who reads this tweets Trump this article demanding stop this lunacy , he may take notice and stop it.

If Left/Liberal pro-jihadi holdovers are purged from govt , judiciary, things will improve and Trump can do better job to improve security.

I once “played house” (lived with) with a “cutter”–never used the phrase “self-mutilator”, though that is not inaccurate. It was the early 90s and the official diagnosis was “Borderline Personality Disorder” and the doctors and institutions involved were located in the NYCity area. This person may have been one of the first to get such a diagnosis, though I don’t know the exact history of the disorder entering the diagnostician’s manual. Many such people end up in 12-step, self-help substance abuse programs, though she never abused any substances while I knew her. I’ve NEVER known a male “cutter.”

FYI, she may have been the most intelligent person I’ve ever met, though I worked for 7 years in a software laboratory of 2000 people and there were very smart people everywhere and may have worked with some smarter than she but was unaware. She eventually became financially successful–after we split–getting in on the ground floor of a software concern, after getting a Masters in Philosophy, of all things.

In my opinion, there is nothing wrong with allowing recruits with substance abuse histories as long as they have demonstrable RECOVERY histories. I don’t know what I think about “pure” cutters–that is, ones without substance abuse recovery histories.

FYI, Borderline Personality Disorder involves separation issues with the person’s parents.

I do not think it wise to allow those with genuine “bi-polar” diagnoses. Genuine means an accurate diagnosis.

I appreciate your comment. However, BPD can involve much more [than] separation issues.

I presume that “than” was omitted. I don’t pretend to be versed in the diagnosis; I DID spend eight intimate years with the young woman and my subsequent experience with a dozen or so “cutters”–all female–were not sexual, yet intimate socially. Of course, my story is anecdotal.

I returned to add the following: If I had to choose X number of females to share a platoon with me with reasonable expectation of combat, this woman would occupy rank position #1 (most-favored) in my list. This I mention even if she were NOT an near-expert marksman, uh, shooter, which is true; she was tough and I tore a shoulder ligament when we wrestled!

Such decisions and policies resulted in Bergdahl being admitted to the US Army after being discharged by the Coast Guard from their Boot Camp for unsuitability (His prosecution was in fact a coverup).. What you are really seeing is the desperate need for the executive to cull the Flag Officer Ranks.

Oh good. Now, the Army can go straight to all the country’s mental hospitals and just recruit from there. I’m sure the post enlistment shooting deaths, like the one we saw last week in Sutherland, TX, won’t increase. The Army knows what it’s doing.

When i was in the Army, back in 1970, we had a way of taking care of idiots, freaks and people who endangered us..it was called ‘fragging’. Other times, we just shot them. Rat obama has spent eight years packing the federal government full of anti-American activists. Until they are removed, expect more of this insanity. Communist democrats are the enemy.

This situation is familiar to one in the UK where ilconsidered judgments by political figures who saw defence as a “cost” instead an insurance policy has resulted in cut upon cut because the budget has been distorted and stretched by two new large carriers – and the JSF’s intended for them. This lowers moral.

The other factor {in UK } has been the way government is going after soldiers long retired for “crimes” committed as far back as 1972 in Ulster against the IRA. Shooting men they believed to be terrorists. People older than I am expect to be summoned to appear in court soon. People/potential recruits read the papers and say nothing but think plenty. This slows recruitment.

In USA, Obama rewrote the ROE in a time of conflict, I can understand how that was viewed by the enlisted, that attempt by him and his admin to “make the military accountable” for their actions was all part of the big picture of dismantling the military ethos piece by piece year on year. Routine socialist treason, it’s the same everywhere.

The chances are that America will have continuing problems with recruitment as the years roll on because if the trends we see in UK are replicated, the millions of “new Americans” may not wish to join up. This a problem we’re having right now, only 2% of our fatal losses in Iraq and Afghanistan were coloured troops and not all of those were from the UK, the ratio in our society of coloureds is 18%.

Some standards then have to be lowered. The trick is to see that this does not happen.

Congress. They have the constitutional authority to declare war, not the President. The President can appoint military leaders. The Pentagon lost its good generals when obama fired them and some quit, for good reasons. A lot of what’s left are not patriots.

This will discourage the REAL men who can fight from enlisting and dishearten the REAL men already in our military. Congress is in charge of declaring war. So we now know that the globalists are making sure we don’t win any. War is money. Collateral damage is a statistic. I’m feeling a draft – of hot air on my neck.

I have a friend who is bipolar, and one does not want to be around him when he is off his meds. There is also a guy who lives in my apartment building who has schizophrenia who was off his meds and was scaring people in the building. How does the military hope to control those with mental health problems such as these?

In my four years in the US Navy (’68-’72), I met seven guys who were kicked out with less than honorable discharges. One in boot camp was for bed wetting, a symptom of adjustment problems. Six in my overseas outfit were kicked out, four for smuggling heroin out of the war zone and two for self-inflicted injury. One shot himself in the leg while playing quick draw with his .45. None of them do I ever wish to see have access to a firearm.

The draft should include women, gays, transvestites, homosexuals, psychologically or mentally challenged. Everybody should use the same rest rooms and showers. Everybody should have the same boot camp experience. The military will need to build portable “Safe Rooms” with plush toys, Play Doh, and coloring books.

The recruitment base has been shrinking. The 20-year-olds need to graduate from high school, can’t be overweight, no allergies or physical deformities, no criminal record, no history of drug abuse, and have to be willing to enroll.

Ok….I get the concern many have here……but can we re-look at the wording……it said ‘a history of’.
Not all mental illness or self-mutilation is untreatable. There are some very strong individuals who have had to overcome a lot and who have done huge amounts of counselling and/or hard work to get well. These people can be more equipped when they have recovered, than those who have never had to overcome the crap that life brings.
Many people have also had transforming life events (such as converting to Christianity) and have developed into better and more loyal people than the average young recruit.
Don’t be so quick to judge this decision. Obviously the military needs careful evaluation and on-going assessment based on individual cases…..but this could be a good thing for many people.
Incidentally, some previous self-mutilators (now recovered) are very tough when it comes to pain and discomfort. They can push through and remain focused because they have already realised that the human body can withstand more than we give it credit for. Don’t write them off!
NOTE: I do NOT recommend people with a history of major depressive, psychotic disorders, unstable bi-polar, or serious personality disorders however. These people could regress under stress, and because of the nature of their disorder they would not be likely to have the early insight required to seek help or early intervention.
