Hate Letter and White Powder Mailed to Israeli Consulate in NYC


A letter filled with images of swastikas and containing an unknown white powder was just received by officials with the Israeli consulate in New York City.

Police officials determined after a time the powder was harmless.

Police responded to the Israeli consulate in New York City.

But the building was in shut-down mode for some time, as law enforcement officials responded to what was initially thought to be an attack of terror.

[A] pink swastika was spray-painted across the doors of the Sutton Place Synagogue, in New York’s Midtown Manhattan area, the [New York Daily News] reported. Surveillance video shows three men near the synagogue, with one spray-painting the doors.

And the New York Daily News gives more specifics:

There have been no arrests.

Hate crimes against all groups are up 22% citywide this year, with 290 incidents reported through Sunday compared to 237 during the same period last year, records show.

The number of anti-Semitic incidents in the city has jumped to 126 so far in 2017 compared to 85 during the same period last year – an increase of 48%.

Nationwide, 541 anti-Semitic incidents were reported in the first three months of this year, compared to 290 during the same period last year, an 86% spike, the Anti-Defamation League said.

On Wednesday at about 5 a.m. a pink swastika was spray-painted across the doors of the Sutton Place Synagogue, on E. 51st St. near Third Ave. in Midtown. Surveillance video shows three men near the synagogue, with one defacing the doors.
