FEC complaint accuses Clinton campaign, DNC of violating campaign finance law with dossier payments

  – The Washington Times – Wednesday, October 25, 2017

Hillary Clinton’s campaign and the Democratic National Committee violated campaign finance law by failing to disclose payments for a dossier on Donald Trump, according to a complaint filed Wednesday with the Federal Election Commission.

Story continues below advertisement

The complaint from the nonprofit Campaign Legal Center said the Democrats effectively hid the payments from public scrutiny, contrary to the requirements of federal law. By law, campaign and party committees must disclose the reason money is spent and its recipient.

“By filing misleading reports, the DNC and Clinton campaign undermined the vital public information role of campaign disclosures,” said Adav Noti, senior director of trial litigation and strategy at CLC and a former FEC official. “Voters need campaign disclosure laws to be enforced so they can hold candidates accountable for how they raise and spend money. The FEC must investigate this apparent violation and take appropriate action.”

Media reports on Tuesday alleged that a lawyer for the Clinton campaign hired Fusion GPS to investigate Mr. Trump in April 2016. The private research firm reportedly hired Christopher Steele, a former British spy with ties to the FBI, to conduct the opposition research, and he compiled a dossier containing allegations about Mr. Trump’s connections to Russia.

The Clinton campaign and the DNC funded the effort until the end of October 2016, just days before the election.

“Questions about who paid for this dossier are the subject of intense public interest, and this is precisely the information that FEC reports are supposed to provide,” said Brendan Fischer, director of federal and FEC reform at CLC. “Payments by a campaign or party committee to an opposition research firm are legal, as long as those payments are accurately disclosed. But describing payments for opposition research as ‘legal services’ is entirely misleading and subverts the reporting requirements.”

And history is closing in on Obama as well.

Byron York: After Trump dossier revelation, FBI is next

Washington Examiner,  October 26, 2017 (thanks to Dan F)

oking into the so-called “Trump dossier” were not surprised when news broke Tuesday night that the Hillary Clinton campaign and the DNC, working through the Democrats’ law firm, Perkins Coie, financed the “salacious and unverified” compilation of allegations of Trump collusion with Russia in the 2016 presidential campaign. (The “salacious and unverified” description comes from former FBI Director James Comey.)

There had been plenty of talk about the Democrats and Perkins Coie, so much that investigators almost assumed that was the case. But it wasn’t until the Washington Post broke the story that it was confirmed.

“I’m shocked,” one lawmaker joked Tuesday night. “Who could have ever guessed?”

Paul Ryan backs House subpoena to the FBI

And why did the story break when it did? Credit the much-maligned Rep. Devin Nunes, chairman of the House Intelligence Committee. The California Republican has been pursuing the dossier more aggressively than anyone else, and it was his Oct. 4 subpoena for the bank records of Fusion GPS, the opposition research firm that handled the dossier, that finally shook loose the information.

But knowing that the Clinton campaign, the DNC, and Perkins Coie supported the dossier is not the end of the story. The most important next step is the FBI.

Sometime in October 2016 — that is, at the height of the presidential campaign — Christopher Steele, the foreign agent hired by Fusion GPS to compile the Trump dossier, approached the FBI with information he had gleaned during the project. According to a February report in the Washington Post, Steele “reached an agreement with the FBI a few weeks before the election for the bureau to pay him to continue his work.”

It was an astonishing turn: the nation’s top federal law enforcement agency agreeing to fund an ongoing opposition research project being conducted by one of the candidates in the midst of a presidential election. “The idea that the FBI and associates of the Clinton campaign would pay Mr. Steele to investigate the Republican nominee for president in the run-up to the election raises further questions about the FBI’s independence from politics, as well as the Obama administration’s use of law enforcement and intelligence agencies for political ends,” wrote Senate Judiciary Committee Chairman Chuck Grassley, R-Iowa.

In the end, according to reports, the FBI did not pay Steele. But the dossier did not go away. Indeed, in January 2017, Comey briefed President-elect Trump (and President Obama) on the dossier’s contents.

In recent months, Nunes has been trying to force the FBI to reveal just what it did in the dossier matter. The intel chairman issued a subpoena to the FBI on Aug. 24, and in the time since, not a single document has been produced to the committee. The FBI and the Justice Department have spent most of that time talking about possibly complying with this or that part of the subpoena. But so far — nothing.

The same is true of Grassley’s inquiries.

MoreDNC says ‘new leadership’ not involved in dossier funding

Clinton campaign, DNC funded firm behind Trump dossier

The new Clinton/DNC/Perkins Coie revelation will likely increase pressure on the FBI to explain what it did, and did not do, with the dossier. Certainly Nunes hopes that is the case. When I asked Nunes Tuesday night what would happen next with the FBI, he responded, “Their best option at this point is to bring all the documents tomorrow to the Capitol.”

Of course, he won’t be holding his breath.

Republican investigators had two big questions about the dossier. One was who paid for it, and that now seems answered. The other was: Did the FBI or other agencies use any information from the dossier as a basis for warrant requests before the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Court? In other words, did, say, the FBI use the dossier’s “salacious and unverified” information to make the case that the bureau should be granted the authority to conduct intercepts?

Nunes, as well as Grassley and Senate Judiciary Committee colleague Lindsey Graham, R-S.C., have been pushing for months for the FBI to answer that question. So far, they’ve gotten nothing.

When the Post story broke Tuesday night, some journalists noted that Democrats involved in the story had been lying about their role. “When I tried to report this story, Clinton campaign lawyer Marc Elias pushed back vigorously, saying ‘You (or your sources) are wrong,'” tweeted the New York Times’ Ken Vogel. “Folks involved in funding this lied about it, and with sanctimony, for a year,” added the Times’ Maggie Haberman.

Yes, they did. But the importance of the Democrats’ involvement in the dossier is that it could be one step on the road to a bigger story. What did the FBI do with the dossier material? Did judges make surveillance decisions in the Trump-Russia investigation based in whole or in part on the dossier? To what degree is the “salacious and unverified” dossier the source of what we think we know about allegations of collusion between Russia and the Trump campaign?

In the end, a House subpoena squeezed the information out of key players in the who-funded-the-dossier side of the story. But so far, the FBI has been much harder to crack.

The sick thing is that it was Shillariah C-l-i-n-t-0-0-n’s job as head of the State Dept. to insure the security of the people at the “diplomatic compound” in Benghazi. Even more interesting is that this latest attack on a US diplomatic compound in Benghazi wasn’t the first. In the late 1960’s or early 1970’s the US diplomatic compound in Benghazi was similarly besieged by, surprisingly enough, f’ing muslums.

Let’s not forget that McPain sent someone on a plane to pick up a copy of the Russian dossier and then gave it to Comey. SO McPain is in on it too. There is another REPUBLICAN in on it too – Jeb Bush and perhaps Ted Cruz.

Cruz does nothing to help Trump. Who can forget that speech all about CRUZ after Trump won? It wasn’t until a few weeks before the general that he begrudgingly endorsed Trump. Also remember how desperate Cruz was. Cruz had a PAC attack Melania and implied she was a hooker and Ted did nothing to stop it as well as nonstop robo calls with disinformation that Trump was pro abortion etc..

When Newt’s PAC crossed the line he required them to stop the ads – not Cruz! Most recently Cruz was caught “liking” a porn site and did you know TED CRUZ was the on the D.C. Madams list and WHY his wife Heidi had a breakdown on the side of the road? She was Ted’s money mule at Goldman Sachs for his campaign… it goes on and on and on with Cruz.

Definitely McCain and Cruz. Cruz has never stopped his vicious, unfounded and unsubstantiated anti-Trump position, just his rhetoric. Watch the Youtube video to see the direct comparisons between what Trump actually said and what Cruz said he said – all lies: “The Ballad of Lynin’Ted”

You should have an IT professional look over your spell checker. It keeps putting “Trump” wherever you mean to put “Cruz”, and it keeps putting “Cruz” wherever you mean to put “Trump”.

I’ve seen Trump on TV and heard him on the radio angrily defame Ted Cruz with all kinds of slanderous statements. I’ve never heard Cruz attack Trump with lies or vitriol.

Cruz was always half-right about Trump, in that the positions he accused Trump of holding were positions — or at least mouth-shoot-offs — Trump had been guilty of in the past, say ten years or more before. Of course Ted never mentioned that these were not Trump’s current positions and Donald never acknowledged that yes, he had endorsed many ideas in the past that would sink his candidacy if he still held them in 2016. So both were political swamp things, at least to that extent.

Looking over Trump’s record of the last nine months I would have to say he has remained substantially true to his campaign promises, so he deserves respect for that. Cruz hasn’t been his biggest supporter in that period but at least he hasn’t worked to sabotage the Trump agenda as McCain has, so he likewise deserves our respect for that, as well as for his continuing strong debunking of the leftist agenda — something on which he is much better versed than Trump is ever likely to be. If Cruz really did help pay for the scurrilous dossier my opinion of him would change, but I don’t think he did.

You mention two repugnant RINOs, Bush and Petain, who are surely anti-Trump, then mention Ted Cruz in passing, qualifying his name with “perhaps”. But then you launch into an attack on Cruz for the rest of the post.

Cruz, a conservative and a constitutionalist, fought very hard against the powerful RINO establishment in Texas, which is centered on the Bush clan and their lackeys.

He won a very brutal battle against a wealthy establishment RINO to attain his Senate seat. Outspent several times over, he relied on a growing network of dedicated, pro-Constitution Tea Party activists, catalyzed by the vigorous endorsement of nationally-aired radio host and former Reagan Administration Justice Dept. official Mark Levin.

His victory in the Texas Republican primary was a case of David vs. Goliath, but led to him walking away with the Senate seat in the 2012 general election – one of the very few pieces of good news that ominous November.

He came to Washington to drain the swamp 4 years before Trump. As one voice in the Senate out of 100, and slammed at every turn by both Democrat and Establishment Republicans, including especially his Senate colleagues, such as Petain, he has not had the opportunity that President Trump has had to accomplish that goal. But what opportunity he has had, he hasn’t wasted by staffing up with leftist Manhattanite relatives and Deep State pro-Islamic swamp creatures such as Kelly and McMaster.

During the presidential primary season, when Bush was widely regarded as the man to beat, Trump and Cruz were notably cordial to one another. Neither wanted to antagonize the other’s supporters, since they were appealing to the same segment of the party – anti-Establishment, pro-rule-of-law, pro-capitalism, traditional Republicans, opposed to the treason of the Uniparty.

The cordiality came to an end as soon as enough previously-favored candidates had dropped out that Trump and Cruz were each other’s greatest opponent. At the next debate, Trump loudly and angrily denounced Cruz with a series of bizarre lies. The lies continued until after Indiana, when Ted dropped out, and beyond, even into the Republican Convention. And the lies just got more bizarre and fantastic as time went on.

When Trump doubled down on his nutty claim that Ted’s father had been involved in the assassination of Kennedy in some unspecified way, and long after Ted had dropped out and was no longer a threat, I really began to question Trump’s seriousness about the campaign. I wondered if he was an Establishment plant, sent on an undercover mission to destroy the Republican Party, in much the same way that Soebarkah had been sent to destroy the country 8 years earlier.

I don’t think Trump supporters who latched onto him early in the campaign, and who never really knew Ted, ever understood the damage that Trump’s style of attack did among Cruz supporters. The people who had not followed Cruz’s career assumed that Trump was telling the truth, while the ones who had knew that it was Trump who was lying. In fact, the claims Trump made against Cruz were just as false, mean, and defamatory as anything the Clinton machine put out against Trump.

What evidence do you have that Ted Cruz and Newt Gingrich broke federal law by contacting their PACs, or any of the other serious claims you have made?

The FBI has degenerated into a bad joke security agency and it appears that DOJ is utterly toothless in imposing it’s will on that renegade organization. Mueller, Rosenstein and Comey are just very crooked men and when Sessions recused himself it placed Rosenstein in a position to set in motion what he did regarding the shifty scumbag Mueller heading a special counsel. Considering that both Mueller and Comey were former head of the CIA tells us much about the FBI. If it had glory days they are long over.
