UC BERKELEY GOES TO WAR ON ‘FREE SPEECH WEEK’

22

The reason the left cannot and will not allow the free exchange of ideas is because their ideas cannot stand up to scrutiny or challenge (much like their Islamic supremacist partners). In the open debate of ideas and philosophies, the better idea wins, which is why the left must shut down those who dissent.

Milo Yiannopoulos to pay about $250K for ‘Free Speech Week’ at UC Berkeley

UC Berkeley absurdly prides itself on being the home of the free speech movement. It was a farce then, it’s a farce now. Fascists cloak themselves in “freedom” to destroy freedom.

Story continues below advertisement

The University has engaged in bureaucratic hijinks in an attempt to deprive us of two of our reserved venues.

Washington Post: Organizers of the “Free Speech Week” at the University of California at Berkeley insisted Monday that the event will go on, despite school officials’ announcement that some large indoor venues could not be rented for the events.

“We’ll do it outdoors if we need to,” said Pranav Jandhyala, a sophomore who is a member of the Berkeley Patriot, the student group that invited provocative writer Milo Yiannopoulos and others to campus. He said that conservative commentator Ann Coulter, frequent critic of Islam Pamela Geller and former chief White House strategist Stephen K. Bannon are all planning to speak there next week.

The real question isn’t whether free speech is under threat in the United States, but rather, whether it’s irretrievably lost. Can we get it back? Not without war, I suspect, as is evidenced by the violence at colleges whenever there’s the shamefully rare event of a conservative speaker on campus.

Free speech is the soul of our nation and the foundation of all our other freedoms. If we can’t speak out against injustice and evil, those forces will prevail. Freedom of speech is the foundation of a free society. Without it, a tyrant can wreak havoc unopposed, while his opponents are silenced.

  • Free Speech Week will go ahead  “come hell or high water”
  • Though access to two venues is in jeopardy thanks to bureaucratic stonewallingby the University, the event will carry on, in the halls, in plazas and on the steps

WASHINGTON, D.C. 18 SEP 2017. Berkeley “Free Speech Week,” an event organized by student group the Berkeley Patriot and underwritten by MILO Inc., will occur as scheduled, running from September 24 to September 27 on the campus of UC Berkeley, despite attempts by the university to use bureaucratic maneuvers and strategic media leaks to disrupt the event and dissuade headline speakers from attending.
The Berkeley Patriot student group has worked for months to secure all necessary permits, permissions, and venue reservations for the event — a celebration of conservative and libertarian voices on campus — including securing space for four days on Upper Sproul, Lower Sproul, Anna Head Hall, Wheeler Hall, and the Zellerbach auditorium.
The paperwork was filed on deadline, and MILO, Inc. transferred the required $65,758.76 to UC Berkeley to arrive at 8 AM ET Monday. Nevertheless, the University

has not yet indicated it will grant access to Wheeler and Zellerbach . This move represents the latest in a stream of administrative efforts by UC Berkeley officials to shut down or damage Free Speech Week.
In a press release issued over the weekend by Steve Sutton, the University’s Interim Vice Chancellor of Student Affairs, UC Berkeley sought to justify its actions, first by congratulating itself for allowing so much free speech on campus, then by blaming the student group for being unable to provide the necessary paperwork on time. Both statements are misleading.
In truth, a paper trail of dozens of emails (available to journalists upon request) shows that questions about security, refunds, and insurance policies from the student group were ignored by the administration of UC Berkeley for more than three weeks .
“On the advice of our attorney, we had asked the University to amend the contracts for Wheeler and Zellerbach to provide for a partial refund if the University cancelled the event,” said a member of the Berkeley Patriot familiar with the situation. “Given the University’s history of cancelling conservative events, this was an entirely reasonable request, but they evaded our question for weeks.
“When the University’s Interim Vice Chancellor finally did email us a contract at 3:30PM ET last Friday, the contract lacked the refund provision entirely. Instead it came with a 90-minute deadline that we had to sign and pay $65,000 that day. We signed and returned it immediately, but the Interim Vice Chancellor refused to accept it anyway .”
The event’s underwriter, MILO Inc., based in Miami, FL, was not able to send a same-day payment as the request did not reach the company until after the close of bank hours on Friday, a situation UC Berkeley “deliberately engineered,” say students.

“It’s quite simple: The University didn’t want the event to happen, but they couldn’t cancel outright, so they needed to make it look like it was our own fault,” said Pranav Jandhyala, News Editor for the Berkeley Patriot. “What we’ve experienced throughout this entire four months has been bureaucratic stonewalling.

“At every step of the way they’ve been uncommunicative – not responding to emails, unable to meet, rescheduling meetings, everything they could try to do to throw sticks in the spokes. We’ve been doing everything possible, and the University has, of course, only thrown obstacles at us in a strategic, bureaucratic, and methodical way ,” he continued.

While the administrators were ignoring over 20 calls and emails from the student group between Wednesday and Friday of last week, they were making calls to journalists , attempting to sow fear, uncertainty and doubt about whether Free Speech Week would proceed. UC Berkeley spokesperson Dan Mogulof told the Los Angeles Times that the Berkeley Patriots had not filed the appropriate paperwork and maliciously hinted that the entire event might be cancelled, in a story published hours before the university’s abrupt and arbitrary deadline.

The University’s attempt to deny the Berkeley Patriot access to Wheeler and Zellerbach is not the only bureaucratic obstacle the University has thrown in front of the event. Earlier this month, UC Berkeley spokesperson Dan Mogulof leaked a preliminary speaker list, which included author Ann Coulter and former chief strategist to the President Stephen K Bannon, to the Chronicle of Higher Education . “The most charitable explanation is that UC Berkeley was trying to drum up opposition to the event. Actually, the university deliberately gave a heads-up to domestic terrorist organizations like Antifa, which got a month-long head start on Berkeley police,” said MILO.

According to students, the Interim Vice Chancellor earlier rescinded at the last minute an agreement with the Berkeley Patriot regarding the number of security applications required for the event . When it first booked Free Speech Week, the Berkeley Patriot had been told that only one security application was required, but Sutton altered the deal, informing the students they needed to file 12 separate security applications and criticizing them for not having done so already.

The University also waited until the last possible moment before informing the Berkeley Patriot that its insurance would not cover the event , forcing the student group to get a certificate of insurance from the event’s underwriter on short notice.

“Since it got sued last year for restricting its students’ free speech rights, Berkeley has been trying to virtue signal its support for free speech by hosting establishment-friendly conservatives like Ben Shapiro, even giving them massive discounts on fees,” said Milo Yiannopoulos, founder and Chief Creative Officer of MILO Inc. “But we represent the true frontier of free speech, and when it comes to genuine free expression UC Berkeley is terrified of leftist violence that the university has either quietly ignored or actively

cultivated for years. Antifa thugs cannot be allowed to censor free expression, so we are going to Berkeley, and Free Speech Week is happening, whether they like it or not.
“If necessary, in the true tradition of Mario Savio and the Free Speech Movement, we will take our audience and our speakers out into the streets. Assuming Berkeley doesn’t revoke our permits for that, too . We will not yield.”

Taxpayers should be up in arms at this sort of grotesque caricature of what a university is supposed to represent. Berkeley has long been the poster child of leftist group think in the USA. While the school has a storied history of accomplishment, its record is severely tarnished by the intolerance shown to those who stray off the leftist ideological plantation.

The university should be shut down as a publicly funded school, perhaps with due consideration for its centers of excellence. Society can still find ways of helping people attain their educational goals in ways other than having them submit to the indoctrination of these faux humanist professors that so characterize Berkeley.

I agree with your characterization of what is going on at Berkeley, and I say this after hearing our President speak so directly and critically to the U.N. general assembly. From the get go of the announcement of this college event, I expected that the left would challenge it. We now live in a world where when one side refuses to give any acceptance to ones right to disagree, they simply shout you down in any manner available to them to shut you up. This kind of conduct is a very dangerous move towards a kind of anarchy/despotism. It is not like those who were intending to speak were promoting violence against certain others; yet, they are being shut down simply because they might see things from a different non-violent prospective. To equate their commentary to being prohibited free speech is not only dead wrong but it is consistent with what we have seen from history by those who have views that are crippling and dangerous to civilized society, such as the Nazi and Fascist movements of the twentieth century. Although I consider myself a centrist, I do hope that these people who intend to deliver non-violent messages thru their opinions and critical comment, which they should have the right to do, are able to do so, as hearing both sides of the coin is and continues to be in the best interest of this great country.

berkeley is a madrassa, it has a rigid socialist dogma that despite being proven to be their dug out of the manure pile of failure throughout history, keeps getting dragged out in the street to stink up society. The fact that the feces-flakes of berkeley cannot publicly debate their position indicated that they know they will be unceremoniously kicked back on the dung heap from which their mantra and dogma continue to rot on.

Lazy dumb Colbert was criticized even by some leftists, because he couldn’t let go trump and mock someone, something else. It’s easy to recycle jokes about someone who’s already been mocked.

These idiots don’t realize ppl are becoming tired of Trump being the news/spotlight, even the joke/fake news.

While the west has for the past centuries been the leader in innovation, invention and human development, they remain shockingly naive about Islam and Muslims. Large Muslim communities within their midst will eventually pull down these leading edge countries and give Asian countries a chance to catch up. Muslims will claim it’s divine intervention for the wrongs committed by the west against them but I would say it’s nature at its best where every country is given the opportunity to shine, something we see a lot of in history lessons.

Pam, you sez: … The reason the left cannot and will not allow the free exchange of ideas is because their ideas cannot stand up to scrutiny or challenge …

It has nothing about scrutiny nor about being challenged

The true reason the left cannot and will not allow the free exchange of ideas is because they do not have any idea to come up with even a single genuine idea

’nuff said !

Yep, the Berkeley admin will do everything in its power to stonewall the free speech week from happening. The chancellor is probably plotting at this very moment with leftist student groups to come up with ways to make sure the event is disrupted at every step of the way. They will stop at nothing.

As an organization seeking to violently enforce their own rules that are at variance with the U.S. Constitution regarding free speech and assembly, Antifa is engaging in insurrection. Article I, Section 8 of the U.S. Constitution refers to the president’s power and responsibility to “suppress Insurrections.”

That makes Antifa a military problem, not a law enforcement problem. It means the government has the power and responsibility to send armed personnel to hunt them down and kill them. That would also include quislings and collaborators in UC Berkeley who aid and abet the insurrection.

It really is alarming that UC Berkeley has to actually have a “free speech” week when we should have free speech every moment of every hour of every day—-till infinity. I have no doubt that the usual suspects will create havoc at this event–that being Antifa, BLM, BAMN, and any other fascist group supported by George Soros and The Democrat Party. My thoughts and prayers will be with the speakers and their security detail that will be protecting them from the fascists.

Went to California 57 years ago. Left there 3 years ago. The Bay area always was loaded with nut cases, but when elections came around, Southern California fixed that problem. Now, the Bay area nut cases run the state. More than 25 years ago, the politicians were warned when businesses were leaving the state. It is truly sad to see what has happened to once very great state which offered so much opportunity to someone like me.

The entire state is devolving into a high tax, crime ridden, gridlocked hell hole. The governor of Caliphornia called his own citizens deadbeats for not paying more taxes — even as he levied a special gasoline tax.
I think the only reason marijuana was made legal is because Caliphornia desperately needed the additional tax revenue.

The ivory tower intellects of Berkeley seem to be rather ignorant of the reality that intimidating speakers with violence to prevent their speech from being heard is the very antithesis of free speech.
