Police: Officer struck by sword; suspect shot and killed by police

August 14, 2017, KEPR (thanks to Dale):

KENNEWICK, Wash. — Police say two officers shot and killed a suspect armed with a sword at the intersection of 10th and Olympia on Sunday afternoon after the suspect struck an officer in the head with the weapon.

[Update: August 14]

Police have identified the suspect as 46-year-old Hussein Hassan of Kennewick.

Officer Joshua Kuhn and Officer Jason Kiel, of the Kennewick Police Department approached the suspect following a report of someone walking down the street with a sword in hand.

—End of Update.—

A spokesperson on the scene said officers received a 911 call at 6:38 Sunday afternoon about a man armed with a sword.

Police say the two officers arrived on the scene at the same time. One officer got out of his car to confront the suspect and police say the man hit the officer in the head with the sword.

Kennewick police say both officers drew their weapons and shot at the man.

Witness Cheyenne Van Tine was there as it happened and described it as a whirlwind.

“I thought my eyes were playing tricks on me, is this man really attacking an officer? And then when the shots were fired there were so many gunshots it was just kind of like ‘Is that really what that is? Of course thats what that is;’ and I had to come up and pull off the side of the road.”

Medics arrived minutes later to treat the injured officer and suspect at the scene.

Police say the officer and the suspect were rushed to Trios Health in Kennewick.

The officer has already been treated and released.

Police say the suspect died at the hospital.

The Special Investigations Unit is now conducting a full investigation into the shooting.

The intersection of 10th and Olympia was shut down for several hours for the investigation.

Any witnesses to this incident are asked to call Sergeant Brockman of the Benton County Sheriff’s Office at 735-6555.
