The man suspected of urinating on the front door of a Northeast Philadelphia synagogue and giving the finger to a security camera recording the act was arraigned on a host of charges Wednesday, including ethnic intimidation and indecent exposure.
Police said bail for Sheidali Dzhalilov was set at $50,000, but it was unclear Wednesday night whether he was still in custody.
On Tuesday night, Dzhalilov, 23, of the 2100 block of Hoffnagle Street in the Rhawnhurst section of the city, turned himself in to Northeast Detectives and announced that he was the man seen on the surveillance recordings desecrating the synagogue. The footage, released by investigators Monday, shows a man dressed in a white shirt and dark jeans walk up to Congregation Beth Solomon at 198 Tomlinson Rd. about 12:30 a.m. Sunday and urinate on the front door and the sidewalk. After emptying his bladder, he leaves in a white sedan, but not before making an obscene gesture toward the surveillance camera. The man’s face was clearly visible.
Police on Wednesday also charged Dzhalilov with institutional vandalism, desecration objects, open lewdness, harassment, and disorderly conduct.
In an interview Wednesday night, Rabbi Solomon Isaacson, founder of Beth Solomon, said he was relieved that a suspect was in custody. Beth Solomon has been vandalized two other times within the last 12 months. In September, a menorah was taken from outside the building, and in January, someone spray-painted graffiti on the wall of a nearby shopping center where the synagogue’s ritual bath is housed….

I grew up within two miles of that location. Back then, the 60’s, none of those streets or homes had been built, it was all fields and farms. Many of the original homes were from the colonial period, along Bustleton Pike which was the route between Philadelphia and New York.
We were essentially the first Jews in that area of Philadelphia, called Somerton, in fact, my sisters and I were the first, second and third Jews in the elementary school, . My father was a doctor who worked at a nearby state hospital which provided housing for the doctors, that’s why we were there.
Demographically it was white and Christian, then some Jews, then Russian immigrants (who built the Orthodox synagogue which is now being desecrated) and South Asian Indians. Blacks moved in, two years ago two students physically attacked a teacher in a classroom, in Feb. a cafeteria worker in the high school was arrested for selling drugs to the students. Apparently now the Muslims have arrived in force. Oh man. wth.

I wouldn’t use the word “prominent” to describe that muslim family, “notorious,” “infamous” or just criminal would be more accurate. That the little p.o.s. likes dark meat may be quite true, if he’s been in jail, he’s certainly learnt to use his head. At that young age such an individual becomes the belle of the ball in no time!

I don’t get it. Why is this not considered a hate crime? People should feel free to worship in peace, and safety at the religious institution of their choice. Actions like this frighten people and make them feel sad. It attacks their self esteem, and their civil rights, such as their right to the pursuit of happiness. Had this been an ill placed pork item at a different venue, then mainstream would have made quite the story of it. This double standard has to stop. People need to organize, stand up for their rights, and challenge unfair laws and practives within the limits of the law.
