About 100 soldiers help with the crush of asylum seekers at Quebec border

Story continues below advertisement

August 9, 2017,Yahoo, :

SAINT-BERNARD-DE-LACOLLE, Que. — Teams of Canadian soldiers stretched canvas across the metal frames of tents at a camp site near the Quebec-U.S. border Wednesday as they helped fellow authorities cope with the crush of asylum seekers crossing into Canada.

The site, located on a flat stretch of grass behind the building where asylum claimants are bused in from the border, was expected to accommodate up to 500 people.

“We have about 100 personnel here on the ground who will set up 25 tents in order to house approximately 500 people,” Maj. Yves Desbiens said in an interview in Saint-Bernard-de-Lacolle.

“We’re going to set up lighting as well, and heating and we’re going to have flooring installed.”

The soldiers will have no role in security matters and will not participate in law-enforcement tasks. All but a few will return to their home base once the site is completed.

Canada Border Services Agency spokeswoman Judith Gadbois-St-Cyr said the camp was being set up because too many people were crossing the border for them to be processed immediately.

In a phone interview, she said it can currently take two or three days to process a refugee claim and most people would not stay in the camp longer than that.

She said border services would be responsible for providing food, water, beds and blankets.

By 5:30 p.m., the tents had been erected and strung with hanging lights as soldiers continued to lay down wooden flooring.

Gadbois-St-Cyr said the camp would be ready to accept people “in a short time” but could not say exactly when that would be.

Earlier in the day, in nearby Hemmingford, some 40 asylum seekers sat under white tents at an impromptu reception centre that has sprung up on the Canadian side of a popular illegal border crossing.

The atmosphere appeared relaxed as border crossers lined up for lunch boxes handed out by RCMP personnel and waited to be shepherded onto buses for the 10-minute drive to the Lacolle processing station.

“I’ll be your tour guide,” one RCMP officer inside the bus could be heard joking.

“There’s the United States; this is Canada.”

Many of the hundreds of people who are crossing the Canada-United States border into Quebec to seek asylum are of Haitian descent.

Robert Duteau, the mayor of Saint-Bernard-de-Lacolle, told The Canadian Press he is not worried about overcrowding.

“There is space to receive them (the soldiers),” he said. “I know there’s a lot of action in that area, but, all things considered, it doesn’t upset me.”

In the United States, the Trump administration is considering ending a program that granted Haitians so-called “temporary protected status” following the massive earthquake that struck Haiti in 2010.

Many of the arrivals are being housed in Montreal at the Olympic Stadium.

The City of Montreal said recently between 250 and 300 people were crossing the Canada-United States border to seek asylum every day, up from 50 per day in the first half of July.

On Wednesday, the Quebec government announced the opening of another facility, this one at the former Royal Victoria Hospital with a capacity of between 300 and 320 places.

Another shelter was opened earlier this week at a former convent that is owned by the city.

Francine Dupuis, who oversees a Quebec government-funded program that helps asylum seekers, said 2,620 people are currently being housed in temporary accommodation in Montreal.

“As soon as people arrive (in Montreal), not only do we find them a place to stay but we make sure it’s safe, that they have the meals they need and that it’s hygienic,” Dupuis said.

“We try to keep families together.”

According to the media these “asylum seekers” are Haitians (predominantly a Christian race) Is this actually true though???? The media has already lied by accusing Trump of causing the Haitians to leave the USA so what else are they lying about here???

As with Europe, the astonishing thing is that the vast majority of these “refugees” are economic migrants/parasites who have bypassed all proper immigration procedures and entered the country illegally. Also the same vast majority have no claim to asylum whatsoever – so why do governments allow them to enter their countries and trigger the lengthy and costly asylum process instead of immediately deporting them? This “breathing space” also gives them a golden opportunity to simply “vanish” into the cities, as millions have already done all across the West.

Actually while there is a lot of corruption in the history of Haiti but one of the major issues they have is the depletion of their soil because their government sold the forest for temporary wealth. Mudslides, poverty and corruption have been a principal part of the nation ever since.

There are so many definitions used for Third World that it is hard to reply to the first part of your statement but the second part is definitely true. Unfortunately, we live in a world in which when poverty is seen the only thing heard is verbal finger pointing and a lot of facts and reasoning gets lost in the fog of accusations.

I have been hoping for the Europeans to kick these people out for 20 or 30 years now and it has only gotten worse. I fear that by the time they finally see the light it will be too late. Europeans don’t have guns either.

I know that Roosevelt was our first Commie president and that the American Communist Party dissolved after his election because they felt that their mission had been accomplished. I know that Johnson dug the hole deeper. But the overthrow had not been completed because there was still the judicial and legislative branches of government to provide some balance, no matter how small. But the election of “O” You Know Who in 2008 made me realize that the infiltration was complete because the indoctrination of the youth was complete. When he became POTUS I cried upon the realization that the US Government had been overthrown.

I’m Canadian and I think these people should be turned back at our border.

Basic refugee law says a refugee has to make an asylum claim in the first safe haven country they come to.

The U.S.A. is a safe haven country. These people are crossing into Canada from the U.S.A., therefore the first safe haven country they came to was the U.S.A. and they should be making their asylum claims in the U.S.A.

Crossing into Canada from the USA and making an asylum claim in Canada should automatically disqualify these people as refugees.

But of course we now have Justin Trudeau as our Prime Minister. Justin’s father, Pierre Trudeau, started relaxing Canada’s immigration rules when he first became Prime Minister back in the 1960’s. Justin is just following in his father’s footsteps, to Canada’s detriment.

As I understand it, they already tried to claim asylum here in the US. They were given 6 months, and that was extended several times. They are NOT from a war torn country, but were here after a disaster to their country. They were told that there would be no further extension on their stay…that they needed to go home and fix their own country. So they decided to give Canada a try instead of going home.

All of which suggests they are not legitimate refugees under the international definition of “refugee.”

They are migrants and if they don’t qualify under Canada’s point system for immigrants then back to Haiti they should go. If they are allowed to stay then Canada is making a mockery of its immigration system (not that we are surprised by that) and giving a slap in the face to legitimate immigrants who have to qualify under the points system and jump through all the hoops and hurdles of our immigration bureaucracy.

I agree with how you feel but because they are not crossing at an officially recognized spot the safe have agreement doesn’t cover them At least that is what our politicians are telling us. They are entering illegally but Trudeau won’t do anything because a lot are from Haiti and they are catholic but more importantly they speak French. WE WILL END UP A THIRD WORLD COUNTRY UNDER ISLAM SOME OF WHOM SPEAK FRENCH. WHAT A DELIGHTFUL FOR OUR KIDS AND GRANDKIDS

Lancelot Blackeburne

An “officially recognized spot” for crossing should not make any difference. They are coming from the USA, which is a safe haven country, so they should have made their asylum claims in the USA.

The fact that they didn’t, or that their claims may have been rejected by the US, means they are not legitimate refugees under international law.

If Canadian officials are saying that refugee law does not apply to people who cross our border at “unofficial” crossings, then our Canadian officials are misleading us. But that wouldn’t be the first time….

Not me. If I had my way Trump would have had his immigration ban 100% right from the start. He would also be well on the way to his wall being finished. How do fault a man who wants to protect his country? There would be no more immigrants at all for some time giving the US to deal with those you already have courtesy of Obama. I was born a Canadian but I don’t think like one. It gets me in trouble sometimes. I followed Trump from the day he came down the escalator announcing his running and didn’t miss his debates, rallies speeches etc. I have never been so involved in any election even a Canadian one. If I have annoyed any who have posted here I mean no offense but you have your views and I have mine. I am sure we can agree to disagree as long as it doesn’t get stupid. I read somewhere that Canada stopped the protected status for Haitians years ago and deported them back to Haiti. 2014 I think it was. According to the story I read close to 100% of these people will be deported.
Some representative from Haiti is apparently in Canada now assisting Canadian officials in the deportation process. Haiti has agreed to take them back even though it would be a “financial strain” on Haiti.
So, a deal will be made and the Canadian taxpayers will have more money spent on illegal aliens while they have citizens sleeping in the streets.
I think all “Western” countries are really getting sick and tired of all this crap.

And this is only the beginning. Muslim vote pandering Justin Trudeau cannot come within 100 miles of a mosque without dropping in to pray the shahada. While other western countries try to cope with the invasion, Trudeau is actually encouraging them to come. The fact that the overwhelming majority are economic migrants doesn’t bother him as long as he can feel warm and fuzzy. Where’s John Wilkes Booth when you need him.

Touchy feely, yada, yada, yada…”Many of the hundreds of people who are crossing the Canada-United States
border into Quebec to seek asylum are of Haitian descent.” Lets see massive earthquake in a small country that has been devastated by previous rulers and dictators. The “freedom loving Americans” come to help and bend them over again to give them the shaft. “Clinton Foundation” How much money was embezzled by them? The Billions dumped into that country it should be one of the most prosperous and richest in the Caribbean. Again follow the money.

That stupid Turdeau is letting our doom through the front door. My hope is that Quebec will be swamped with welfare claimants and the system will have to be tightened so citizens will get first dibs on resources. I also hope Quebecois will get so fed up with this invasion that they’ll vote Conservative in the next election.
