Anti-Terror Flower Pots Take Root in Italian Cities

24

Italy’s left-leaning political minds say counter-terrorism should be green — and that means out with the ugly concrete slab barricades and in with the flower pots and oak trees.

Yes, Italy, land of the recent Islamic terror attacks, is actually trying to counter further aggressions with environmentally friendly solutions.

An architect in Italy is proposing to replace ugly cement barricades with pretty flower pots, saying counter-terrorism doesn’t have to be visually unpleasant.

This is a new height of ridiculous.

The Local has more:

Italy is turning to green solutions in order to protect its public spaces against potential attacks, without having a negative impact on the appearance of squares and other popular sites.

Italian architect Stefano Boeri last week suggested that authorities use oak trees and flower pots at major sites to limit the impact of attacks using vehicles in big cities.

Boeri, the Italian creator of China’s vertical forests, called for Italian cities to install trees in large pots – up to three metres wide – as barriers at key pedestrian sites.

After Bari and Florence, Rome is the latest city to see the proposal blossom.

Forty large pots containing oleander flowers were placed around the perimetre of Piazza del Quirinale in Rome, an official residence of the Italian president, reported Il Messaggero.

The concept is growing on others too.

“It’s a way not to militarize our urban centres while making them greener,” said Antonio Decaro, mayor of Bari, a city in southern Italy, cited in Corriere della Sera.

Decaro also said he wanted to involve students from Bari’s Fine Arts Academy, who could decorate the large pots in order to create “the best response to extremism”.

Leoluca Orlando, the mayor of the Sicilian capital Palermo, has also pledged to unite an alliance of creatives to design pots for his city.

And companies from the private sector could help foot the bill. Alessandro Mezzalira, president of construction firm Fitt Spa, says his company will donate “a considerable amount” to make it happen.

Mezzalira has called for others to contribute too. “The more we are, the better,” he told Corriere della Sera.

Boeri, the architect behind the idea, had said that “we should oppose the instinct of death brought by these bestial people with the calm presence of plants – in particular oaks.”

Milan has also chosen to reinforce security at several monuments with barriers made of concrete after the August 17th terrorist attack that killed 16 people in Barcelona.

their country is falling down around their ears – the earthquakes, the generational financial crisis, the chronic youth unemployment, the burden of welfare dependent migrants, the social chaos that they bring in terms of crime and disease as well as making people uneasy. That they have avoided bombings thus far is little short of miraculous, although low level chaos is already normal, as are assaults, sexual and otherwise.

That is not fair of you, the Italian Secrets Service is quite good and that is why nothing yet happened. It used to be called SISMI but they changed their name, how cunning they are so cunning I cannot mention it.

I’d like to believe that but alas, if they were so good and so ‘cunning’ as you put it, then there wouldn’t be any migrants in Italy in the first place… if they were any good, Italy would be like Hungary – no migrants

Concrete barriers are descending all over Europe.

Just a little more pathetic than declaring “we are not afraid,” saying “‘Je suis (fill in latest victim)”, and holding vigils instead of doing something sensible and meaningful.

Well, I guess it’s better than doing nothing. Who knows? It might help stop some Muslims, they are fanatical, but not the brightest eggs in the basket.

Trees, yes, good idea, lots of big trees with strong branches at about the 10 ft. level. There should be a rope attached of appropriate strength to present a convincing counterargument to terrorism.

A few pizza pies would also make a good barrier. I hear it is a favorite food of terrorists. You know, a slice in one hand and a bomb in the other.

How about a barrier consisting of rutting pigs?

Bring in the pigs!!! Let them wander freely. And keep a few at strategic tourist spots like the Vatican. Does the pope eat bacon or has he given it up so as not to insult his fellow muslimes?

Hungary also wanted to put pig heads on the border fences. I guess this picture was a one time deal.

Have you ever smelled a burka clad woman? Evidently they never bathe and have not heard of deodorant. Place a few of these gals at tourist sites and no one will go near the place.

Oh my, yes! Get students from the Fine Arts Academies involved. That’ll show the savages! “The best response to extremism!” LOL! The idiot mayor of Bari couldn’t bring himself to say “Islamic attacks.” Why, that would be “islamophobic.” According the US State Dept, any number of “extremist organization could be involved.” Watch out for those groups of nuns!

So this is what they mean getting used to the “new normal”….getting used to Islamic terrorism, that is…so that while IslamoNazis are occupying your country and killing its citizens….at least it’ll look pretty. Get used to it.

Italy has to call in Armani, Prada and the likes to get it more fashionable. What a jokers and I am in Naples where the jihadis do not dare to act. I wonder why, may be the name Camorra rings a bell for them.
