Airbnb, a popular alternate to hotels, has canceled a booking for a group that had planned to stay in Charlottesville, Virginia, for purposes of attending a rally.
Freedom of assembly, anyone?
Airbnb told the coordinator of the rally, Jason Kessler, that his group had violated the company’s standards.

Airbnb told event coordinator Jason Kessler that the group violated the company’s community standards, which requires that all members “accept people regardless of their race, religion, national origin, ethnicity, disability, sex, gender, sexual orientation, or age.”
Airbnb canceled the reservations made for the use of a white supremacist group that uses the name “SCNazi” on Facebook. Officials with the group announced plans to attend the rally, offering to organize lodging as well as travel and other considerations for members and supporters exclusively through the private Facebook group.
In addition to canceling the bookings SCNazi made to reserve nine separate homes for its members, group leaders reported their accounts were permanently deleted for failing to live up to the Airbnb community guidelines, according to Vice.
“It’s time for the #AltRight to flex its muscles and boycott @Airbnb. Also need to consider a lawsuit,” event coordinator Jason Kessler write on Twitter.
White Nationalist Richard Spencer decried the fact that the city of Charlottesville formerly ordered the event be moved to a location just outside the city. “We are clearly in the right and we can win,” he asserted on his youtube page declaring the rally will take place as planned. “This is going to be really really fun, see you soon!”
The “Unite the Right” rally will be held in Charlottesville Saturday in response to the city board voting to remove a Confederate statue. A district judge ordered the statue will remain in place, but the group plans to protest the proposed removal during the course of the weekend.

Perhaps next they will want to deny use to any groups that support the state of Israel, because they represent “hate and oppression of Palestinian rights.” Be careful what you wish for – because it can come full circle.

This is clearly discrimination but, because it is directed toward a right-leaning group, such discrimination is to be applauded apparently.

Yes, not because I agree with them (which I certainly do not), but because the right of free expression was the very first right our founding fathers established and secured for us. Start chipping away at that, just because you despise the message, and you never know where you’ll end up.

If you start picking and choosing who you want to allow to express their viewpoints, there will soon be no democracy. And another Hitler WILL be in power. If you can’t see that, perhaps you should go back and read about Hitler. He never allowed any dissenting viewpoints. Is that what you want for America.

The best way to fight the left is to use the same legisaltion they use to fight the centrists and right. In the UK airbnb could not prevent anyone staying just because of political persuasion. There are plenty of legal precedents that should ensure whats right for the left is right for the right!!

Good! I am a card carrying Republican. This rally is NOT about free speech. This is a rally led under the guise of free speech but it is really a rally for a gathering modern day Nazis and KKK aka white supremacists . Check out the Daily Stormer. Look at who their speakers are. On their event pages they talk about first stop Charlotesville, Next stop Treblinka. Still want to condemn AirBnb? Wake up!

“Look at who their speakers are.” So, then, it IS about free speech, isn’t it? Free Speech is NOT about supporting speech we agree with, it has to be about allowing speech we strenuously disagree with or it means nothing at all. You people who oppose free speech are far more horrible and rotten and dangerous and destructive than anything the neo-nazis or the KKK might say. First you silence them, but are you able to say where it stops? No, you can’t, because you’re not intelligent enough to see that far ahead.

Thank you. The First Amendment is not about protecting speech that everyone agrees with – it is to protect speech that some (or many) of us find offensive. It is only a matter of time before someone finds something disagreeable about ANY speech. To say that the speech of the KKK or “neo-Nazis” should not be permitted is emulating those very same people, only from an opposite end of the political-cultural spectrum.
