This past Friday, Ilhan Omar made an appearance on The Daily Show with Trevor Noah. Omar is a newly elected democratic legislator for the Minnesota House of Representatives who won her seat as a Democratic Farmer-Labor Party candidate in the November 2016 elections. To the right, she is best known for recently voting to allow surviving family members receive insurance payouts from suicide bombers and other individuals who are killed during the commission of a terrorist activity. To the left, she is an overnight cultural icon who “is America’s hope and the President’s nightmare,” according to her visit with Noah. She has been showcased on CNN’s Most Influential Muslims and – please get your vomit bucket ready — been given her own Muslim Barbie icon, the “Hijarbie.” Omar received worldwide support after claiming to be the victim of a hate crime at the hands of a Washington D.C. taxi driver. Conveniently, the alleged incident was never reported to the police and therefore never investigated for its veracity. She has since deleted the Facebook entry describing the supposed attack.
Omar is a 35-year-old mother of three and is America’s first elected Somali representative. She was married in an Islamic ceremony in 2002 at the age of 19, but never officially filed certification in any government office. This is the foundation of a complex story that has lead to allegations of bigamy. After marrying as a teen, she then gave birth to three children with that man, separated from him in 2009, married a man whom people have accused of being her brother for citizenship purposes (and is still legally married to), and finally reunited with her first “husband” in 2011, who she is still with today. Reporters who have asked her campaign to clarify this story get slapped with a threatening letter from the campaign attorney. The only direct answer about these allegations is from campaign manager Ben Goldfarb, who said asking Omar to explain this situation is “[Donald] Trump-style misogyny, racism, anti-immigration rhetoric and Islamophobic division.”
What is important to note about her marriages is not just that she is accused committing immigration fraud; but her complete non-adherence to American customary norms. Omar is a refugee from Mogadishu, Somalia who entered the United States at the age of 3 in the year 1985. In both Muslim and Somali culture, family and community members often arrange weddings. Once a couple is set to be married, the men present a form of dowry known as mahr, and the couple is cleared to wed in a ceremony officiated by [an] Imam[s]. This is a common practice that routinely takes place in community centers and municipal buildings across the country, according to the Minnesota Post. Also according to the Post, many young Somalis in the community decline to make their marriage official according to American laws, either because they are distrustful or ignorant of the government technicalities. The latter has been shrugged off by mainstream media as the reason Omar did not adhere to American law by recording her marriage.
Omar refers to herself, and is also hailed by the mainstream, as an intersectional feminist and champion of LGBT rights. On the surface, one might be tempted to think that a young woman involved in such a tawdry love triangle who is able to rise to prominence in her strict Muslim community means that social progression is possible in one of the largest Islamic populations in the United States. However, what’s chillingly clear about this situation is quite the opposite: despite claiming to channel the embodiment of a new-age Western Muslim pioneer, Omar’s voting patterns reveal that no matter how “progressive” her facade may seem to be, she still votes for extremist radical Islamic viewpoints and ignores American laws in favor of Islamic ones, once more giving credence to the argument that there is no such thing as a moderate Muslim.
Personal life and citizenship fraud allegations aside, Omar’s voting record shows that she is at best a terrorist apologist; at worst a hostile government agent. Last February, the bill H.F. 1397, which limits life insurance payouts of terrorists, was introduced by Rep. Joe Hoppe (R-Chaska). As shocking as it is, the need for this bill exists. In 2015, Syed Rizwan Farook, also known as the San Bernardino Shooter, obtained two life insurance policies totaling in the amount of $275,000 in preparation for his Islamic- linked terror attack. His mother sued to have the insurance companies pay the policies out to her, and the matter is set to be litigated in court sometime in the near future.
The Minnesota district that Omar represents is the largest Somali concentration in the United States. The region is also heavily Muslim, with Keith Ellison representing the district as the first Muslim congressman since 2007. The FBI confirms that at least 42 Somali refugees have vacated the United States to join overseas terrorist organizations, including al-Shabab and ISIS. Nearly 50 other Somali-Americans have been tried and/or convicted of providing material support to overseas terrorists.
One word you probably haven’t heard in the media is istishhad. The Arabic word means heroic death, or more commonly, martyrdom. In the West we know this word as ‘suicide bombing.’ According to the Human Rights Watch whitepaper on Logistical and Financial support [to Muslim terrorists], state support for suicide bombers is a commonplace practice in Muslim countries. Sadaam Hussein famously upped the payout to families of suicide bombers from $10,000 to $25,000 during the Iraq War. Syria and Iran are also other Muslim states that provide both logistical and financial support to the families of suicide bombers. IDF analysts have found that Hamas, The Holy Lands charities, and other Muslim organizations give financial support to surviving family members throughout the Middle East. Other organizations, such as the PA Ministry of Social Affair, provide families not with ‘payouts’ for the suicide attack, but with financial assistance in the absence of a breadwinner who died committing a suicide attack.
We haven’t heard from Omar why she voted to help Muslim terrorists in the same way as a country we have been at war with for almost this entire millennia. Despite multiple mainstream media appearances since this vote took place, nobody in the press has yet asked her to explain her reasoning. The media has, however, been extremely vocal that the right-wing blog that initially broke the story on her marriage is “misogynistic and xenophobic” for inquiring.
