This sums up the terrible state American academia finds itself in. The President of the United States and half of the electorate has been thoroughly demonized on campus. This is what passes for academic achievement these days. This bodes very ill for the future of the United States.

“Arizona State U Lets Students Organize Anti-Trump Protest Instead of Taking Final Exam,” by Lukas Mikelionis, Heat Street, April 17, 2017:

Story continues below advertisement

An Arizona State University professor has allowed a group of students to organize anti-Trump protests instead of taking the final exam in their human-rights class.

Angeles Maldonado, a professor at the university, has given her class taking Global Politics of Human Rights an option – either take an exam or start a group project, The Arizona Republic reported.

A group of about 20 students decided to create a project and the best way to do it would be to start an anti-Trump demonstration to voice their concerns about the perceived human rights violations by the administration.

“The class decided that as a group project they wanted to make their voices heard about the issues that are affecting them today, so instead of just reading about the human-rights violations, they’d speak out about the current violations that are happening,” said professor Maldonado, adding that it was her duty to support the students’ decision.

The student protesters made signs and formed a human wall to symbolize “Wall Against Hate” to stand against President Trump’s policies like the plan to build a border wall and enforce immigration laws.

“This was something that we all got together and said we would express some of the things we don’t like, so a lot of the other people here are protesting things like immigration, immigration ban, women’s rights, things like that,” said Alex Corella, a student in Maldonado’s class.

He was also glad to be protesting the Trump administration, saying “This is better than a final.”

The protest that eventually attracted other bystanders also highlighted other issues such as gay rights, women’s rights, Black Lives Matter, and the prison system….

Any University /college that allows this sort of bias behavior should loose their accreditation by the American depart of education .

The Department of Education does not accredit colleges and universities. That is done by a voluntary membership organization.

Look it up . If it were the case any school could have acredited status. The department of education has guidelines and any school that doesn’t meet requirements goes off the list.

Actually I did not need to look it up. The link you provided actually confirms my post. Perhaps you should have read your own link before commenting.

After reading your comment I did look further. I know that when we were looking at potential secondary institutions for my son to attend it was recommended that we use the website of the department of education to determine accredited schools.
However , your correct they are not the only institution that determines this , it’s more complex then your answer or mine. I was only going by my personal experience .
In the end my son chose a local school that met his needs and was recommended by a school counselor. In the end he was disappointed in the education he received . As they uneccesarily complicated his school schedule and caused a slight delay in his graduation.
Going back to the whole point I still feel the status of Berkeley should be on a list of schools that are not recommended . That being based on the constant controversy taking g place there and what I feel is biased attitudes within the school staff.

I would agree that Berkeley has problems. Unfortunately so do many other Universities. American universities, to a large degree, are run by radical leftists who punish any speech they disagree with, calling it hate speech. While I strongly disagree with many left wing ideas, as a veteran I would fight to the death for their right to their beliefs. The First Amendment is only needed for speech you disagree with.

This seems to be making headlines the most,or at least that is how it appears to me.
Sure everyone has the right to their freedom of thought it’s just when large groups start attacking and use politics as a way of silencing the opposition they no longer have a right to be protected.
As a vet I have allot of respect for you, but people such as the biased violent Berkey crowd they have little or none.
One only needs to look back to the days of Vietnam soldiers went to war because they had to when they came home they were treated like dirt.
Though I agree Vietnam was a mistake still those who went didn’t deserve the hate they experienced.

I was one of those Vietnam Veterans. I support speech, NOT violence. They are not the same. When speech becomes violence it also becomes open rebellion. That can not be permitted. The failure of the police in Berkley to protect conservatives and the seemingly open promotion of violence on the campus including posters advocating the beheading of members of the College Republicans you have crossed the line between speech and criminal activities. Any member of the administration who encourages this type activity should be charged with aiding and abetting.

Agreed. When I was completing my Bachelors degree, the instructor told us at the outset that if you had no absences and an “A” average going into the final, you were exempt. I let him know I had a job interview at a school 400 miles away on a class day, had the “A” average, and was back in class the next day. He had me take the final because, in his words, “A deal is a deal”. We need more like him.

I’m from the old school, used to teach college laboratories and still believe in the final exam. Believe though the final should not be stressful – should almost be a supplementary learning summary of the entire term, not necessarily “just another (or the last) exam”.

It is one thing to have a discussion in class. It’s a completely different when you let the class skip the final exam to protest. The Dean should gives the students a failing grade and not let them graduate. If he or she don’t then they should both be fired for not doing the Jon they are payed for.

There are very few institutions of higher learning that do not have professors exactly like her.Try taking a history or political science course from a conservative. Few and far between. Same goes for English Departments. Of course gender and ethnic studies departments are almost completly lacking conservative thought. Sometime you should read the mission statement of the professional association for sociological studies.

As a California resident it’s well known that all you need to get accepted at Arizona State is a pulse. Not surprised. When the rigors of acceptance are so great, what can you expect of its staff?

The same must apply to the hiring of ASU’s staff and professors….Pathetic, and yes they should not only be defunded, but lose accreditation.

I’m not sure how some of those “students” qualify then. It seems they’ve no pulse, no brain and head and a** are interchangeable.

I had a ‘budgie’ (parakeet) once and he would repeat anything I said to him. These brain-dead kids are just simpleton budgies for the left, blithely repeating what they hear. Understanding is not required.

Totally irrelevant if they take the exam or not, no one will hire the brain dead except those in thought free physical labor only. Jobs like that they can get as elementary school drop outs.

To me those students are either stupid or lazy. They choose to form a stupid human ‘wall’, instead of actually doing research into real life human suffering. They aren’t taxing their so-called ‘brain’ in the least. And the instructor is enabling them. That’s the worst part. Wait until these kids get out into the real world.

They’ll do fine – working in a useless goobermint job with a title of equality specialist, or equity officer, or maybe white privilege officer, or affirmative action officer, or social justice specialist, etc. They’ll make big bucks, work a few years and get a golden parachute retirement package.
.
Goobermint at all levels is filled with useless people like this.

Another affirmative action reject for a professor.
In this case, it is of no consequence whether they take the final exam or not since the subject matter of this class is of no value. Why make them do anything for the class?
