Upstate New York students debate exterminating Jews

The New York education commissioner defended a local teacher’s assignment asking students to argue in favor of exterminating Jews. It sounds incomprehensible, but MaryEllen Elia, speaking in Syracuse, N.Y. (Onondaga County) this past Thursday morning, did just that. It seems especially hideous, contemporarily, since that city’s Jewish Community Center has been under lockdown three times this year: twice for bomb threats and most recently for a vaguely described “threat of violence.”
The education commissioner was addressing an assignment given by a teacher in neighboring Oswego County this past February. The teacher, Michael DeNobile, gave the assignment as part of the Oswego County CiTi/BOCES New Vision program. According to local reporter Julie McMahon, the students were asked to “put themselves in a Nazi leaders’ shoes and argue for or against the ‘Final Solution’ to exterminate Jewish people.”
It seems that only two students were disturbed by this request. Jordan April and Archer Shurtliff (neither are Jewish) are both seniors at Oswego County high schools participating in the New Vision program. The program allows students to take college-level classes on the SUNY Oswego campus. April and Shurtliff brought their concerns directly to DeNobile, higher administrators, and even the Anti-Defamation League (ADL). The two girls’ goal was “to make sure no other student would be asked to argue in favor of killing Jews again.” They also asked for the New Vision program to retract the assignment completely. They were unsuccessful. In exchange for their complaints, however, the entire class was given the opportunity to choose their own alternative project. Only three students took advantage of that, including April and Shurtliff.
Education commissioner Elia held strong to her support of the assignment, citing critical thinking as the supposed learning tool, saying, “I think it’s certainly a question where you want students to think on both sides and analyze … which position a person is taking.” Student Archer Shurtliff, in a separate interview, stated conversely that “it’s settled opinion[.] … [Y]ou can’t say that Jews deserve to die. It should be a settled thing.”
Dogged local reporter McMahon posted the actual homework assignment on Syracuse’s online news website. Eerily, it was stamped “Top Secret” in red at the top. McMahon writes:

The assignment itself notes that the point is “not for you to be sympathetic to the Nazi point of view[.] … Ultimately, this is an exercise on expanding your point of view by going outside your comfort zone and training your brain to logistically [sic] find the evidence necessary to prove a point, even if it is existentially and philosophically against what you believe,” the assignment says.
(Ironically, Oswego County is home to “Safe Haven Holocaust Refugee Shelter Museum,” which commemorates America’s only refugee camp for victims of WWII. In 1944, nearly 1,000 refugees were housed in the army barracks there as “guests” of President Roosevelt. According to previous newspaper reports, approximately 900 of them were Jewish. Strangely, the words “Jew” and “Jewish” are apparently mentioned only once on the museum’s website.)
ADL education director Beth Martinez said the whole thing is “deeply troubling,” adding that students should never be given an assignment “that even hints at their [sic] being ‘two sides’ to the ‘Final Solution’ / Holocaust.” Martinez said she was notified by Roseann Bayne, the assistant superintendent for the CiTi program, that the assignment was still being offered along with an alternative.
Martinez cited Common Core as a catalyst for pushing students to argue from a perspective from which they do not agree. This sounds benign at first glance – until you see an example like this, where a student is asked to justify mass murder as part of a learning experience. One can only hope such a thing would be outside most people’s “comfort zone” and remain there.
The fight is definitely not over for two 17-year-old girls who had the guts to take on a monumental task: teaching some seriously misguided adults that “critical thinking” does not mean abandoning all human decency at the schoolhouse door.

I emigrated from the former Soviet Union almost 30 yrs ago, but still can chock sometimes:)
But since I have a “great” personal experience of the abuse and persecution from the state, I would be happy to share and contribute for this blog. I paid a high price for the great honor and privilege to become a proud citizen of USA- the best country in the world. A big part of my family perished in Holocaust and when I read stories like this I can’t tolerate it. I also like your idea to write the letters about this “teacher”. Would be great to get some suggestions. Best regards.

I could see this assignment being instructional, although I’d find it troubling to hear of students arguing in favor the proposition that the state should exterminate vast number of people- men, women, and especially children, who were of no use to the Nazis- based solely on their religious or ethnic affiliation,
I wonder what the reaction would be if the assignment were to argue in favor of exterminating Moslems.

I’m horrified by this educational exercise. This is not only disgusting, it is useless except for those looking to justify anti-semitism and have fantasies of being Nazis. All the reasons for the Final Solution came down to one thing: hatred of Jews. There absolutely was nothing rational behind the arguments for the Final Solution. Zero. How does that develop critical thought?
With a minimum of time I can think of a half dozen topics which are actually relevant in our society which students could use to develop their critical thinking skills, e.g. birthright citizenship, rent control, term limits, rationing end of life care, the science behind climate change, is abortion murder, should we abolish the death penalty, etc?

How much more of this has to happen before people demand enough is enough. So that schools never even contemplate such an assignment ever again. But first, Ms Elia and Mr. DeNoble should be immediately fired and given a lifetime ban from ever working in the education field again. The idea that this affords students the opportunity to think critically,.is not only a lie but, PROOF that indoctrination is part of the curriculum in many U.S. schools. Bravo to the two students who spoke up.. If students were given an assignment asking them to argue either in favor, or against slavery, how many minutes would it take before the school was over run with violent rioters.

Me too. Since our schools are public, and survive thanking to our property taxes (over the top and rising regularly), could the taxpayers have more/some control of the public school’s education? I’m sure we can request it. To see who is who in our schools and what’s their agenda. I’m sure we all would be very surprise in accordance with the awful facts I found even in this blog. Otherwise we all pay much higher price that we even can imagine.

This article comes on the same day that I had a serious conversation over lunch about a recent action that involved the writing on the walls of a local high school of derogatory words directed at blacks and Jews with Swastikas and a call to kill them all. Our conversation included our observations that this kind of hateful conduct seems to be growing here in the states. The discussion raised questions as to why this was happening now and seemingly increasing in propensity, as none of us could remember so much of this conduct as we grew up. Sure, we all recognized that this type of hate has existed for eons, but we all agreed that it has become more common place today then we could remember years ago. Why? We all wondered! Has there been an influx into the U.S. that is generating more of that kind of hateful conduct? Have all of our institutions, religious and public, failed to promote tolerance and acceptance of all cultures that are active in the free world? Or has there been an increase in the promotion of hate directed against people of other cultures and races? None of us could come up with answers to these questions. The conclusion that we all reached is that our youth and future generations will face continuing horror, unless we all learn what being a good neighbor is all about and we act with tolerance, rejecting animosity. We all wondered why those of the Jewish culture have become the whipping people of this world, and why the blacks are looked on with such angry rhetoric. Neither of these people have done anything to deserve the hateful conduct promoted against them; yet, the hate patently exists. It has become the rule today to call anyone who one does not agree with a racist or bigot. Our own president is accused of being a racist/bigot, when it seems to me that all he wants to do is reduce crime and free this nation of criminals. The world has gone mad.

Sometimes I think I’m living in a science fiction movie. Muslims hate each other, look at the Middle East, what a mess. Look what happened to Lebanon, Afghanistan, Iraq and Pakistan once they became overrun with Muslims. Isis tells us exactly what they will do but the leaders that be don’t believe them when they say they’re sending terrorists into Europe. Look at Europe now, I’d never go there on vacation. Five years ago, but not now. It’s becoming a hell hole. Imagine France wanting to put a fence around the Eiffel Tower instead of curtailing Muslim immigration.
It only stands to reason that Canada and the US will be next.
Yet our prime minister wants more of these people. Before any leader agrees on such mass immigration they should research the history of those whom they allow into their country first. It’s only common sense. Hopefully I’ll wake up soon and realize this will have been a very bad dream, or should I say ‘nightmare.’

Brenda, I share your concerns. I assume your are a Canadian, and I am also observing the painful and dangerous decisions that your countries leaders are making in opening your borders to a people who come into countries as migrants, but they bring with them a belief system that can, in and of itself, result in their being unable to assimilate into Canadian culture and accept others who are not of the Islamic world. As a student of history, I have observed that prior influx of immigrants involved people who placed their culture secondary to the culture of the of the country that they emigrated too. They were able to practice their belief system, but they also accepted as a priority the new countries culture and laws as their primary responsibility and became lawful and conscientious citizens of the new country to whom they emigrated. I have come to believe that Islamic believers simply cannot do that, thereby opening those countries up for conduct that is unacceptable to becoming a responsible citizen of the country to whom they have emigrated. That is the nightmare that has already proven itself to be occurring here and throughout the free world. Until our leaders recognize that reality, the floodgates will remain open to this very dangerous environment.

So why can I see what is happening and our leaders cannot? They’re more ‘in-the -know’ than I am politically. Do you think it’s money talking, more than our leaders not recognizing reality?
That’s why I feel like I’m in a sci – if movie. Very few can see what’s happening. The Jews are fleeing Europe, and Canadian and American universities are preaching anti-semitism. The UN has acknowledged Christian genocide in the war-torn middle eastern countries by Isis and not one country is trying to help them. Even the pope won’t help them, yet he’ll wash the feet of Muslim refugees.
When will this movie end?

The determination of intellect is not based on how long you went to school. In my opinion it is based on whether you think reasonably and are understand what right thinking is all about. As you express your thoughts, I am convinced that you are both reasonable and right thinking. The problem people like you and I face is that we are dealing with many who consider being politically correct as being paramount rather than face the reality that patently stands before us. Islam is using its propaganda to stultify those of us that recognize and face the reality of a world that is facing a very dangerous political belief system disguised as a so-called religion. Though I also believe that some of those who are Muslim may not be so wholly involved in their belief system as to preclude them from becoming assimilated citizens within the free world, I am afraid that they have allowed their belief system to be captured by the radical believers, and therefore should not be allowed in to free world countries, unless they can be vetted convincingly.

The peaceful Jewish tribes of Saudi Arabia were slaughtered, enslaved or driving out by the f’ing muslums. Tens of millions of Hindus, Buddhists, Christians, Jews, Baha’i, Sikhs, Zoroastrians have been collectively slaughtered by f’ing muslums over the 14 centuries since its bloody birth.

While I recognize that Islamic history has been horrendously heinous and warlike over its approximate 1400+ years, and while I also recognize the considerable danger that their belief system represents, and I believe that no vetting process can weed out those who would become terroristic, I also recognize that short of a major world bloodbath against these people, nothing will change. That is why I am of the opinion, contrary to the ultra liberals, the Democratic party and the “snowflakes” that the answer lies in some policy that keeps them out of the free world countries. That is the simplest solution to an unresolvable problem, avoiding a world wide blood bath. Let them live in their own world, and be prepared to battle them when they try to invade ours.

Millions of Germans had to die to defeat nazism. There are already too many muslums and traitorous collaborators in dying western style democracies. Ultimately you’re going to have to kill muslums or live under Shari’a law because there is no peaceful solution to a totalitarian, antisemitic, fascist, violent, vile ideology except deadly force. Imagine the uproar if the word Muslim had been substituted, and deportation for exterminating.
On another point, not many people realise that the first victims of the Nazis were Germans, firstly political opponents and then inmates of mental hospitals, disabled people etc. This of course does not diminish in any way the horrors of the Jewish persecution.

There is no argument that can condone the Holocaust.
Common Core also wishes discussion re:
Were those who threw the tea into Boston Harbor, Freedom Fighters or terrorists?
Were those who flew airplanes into the Twin Towers Freedom Fighters or terrorists?
While a teacher is not supposed to take one side or the other, unfortunately that is seldom the case. How a teacher sees a situation, is how an argument goes.

The Left is determined to destroy every shred of morality established by the Judeo-Christian values that built America. Once the Left succeeds in obliterating any remaining sense of right and wrong they can legitimize and substitute their own left-wing liberal narrative of political correctness, moral relativism, and historical revisionism – America will be George Orwell’s dystopian 1984. The Left-wing liberal lemmings who allow their children to be indoctrinated in this particularly vile and destructive manner are participating in dehumanizing, desensitizing, and destabilizing of their own children. You are more right on than you even realize. Having lived 75 years on this planet, I can testify that the world today is not just “upside-down” or “Bizzaro” but totally evil and insane. A recent article by the head of the “American Physciatric and Phsycological Institute (or something like that) made the case that anyone who believes that one can ” cut this or snip that ” and change a man into a woman or vice-versa is clinically insane. With trillions of X or Y Chromosomes screaming that one is male or female, to deny this is truly insanity.
This world is the exact opposite of the one that I was raised on. When a student gets docked on an essay for using the word “mankind” because it is “sexist”, it is time to look up because “your redemption draweth nigh”. That is King James language for the Lord is coming and people better prepare to meet their maker. These corrupt end times were described 5,000 years ago…”as it was in the days of Noah, so shall it be in the days of the son of man”. I suggest that people study up on what it was like “in the days of Noah” and call on the Lord Jesus to save them from what is coming. All this is just the tip of God’s coming judgements.

A mind must be absolutely devoid of emotion as well as depraved to find this a criticle thinking exsercise!! I mean good lord…that is like asking whether or a not a baby is a baby even if unable to live outside of the womb!! Or how about whether or not Islam should be chopping off hands? or keeping women from being valued as equal members of society…or how about throwing gay people from tall buildings? It’s all the same depraved thinking….but noooooo, this silly twisted holocoust denier account is the only thing this sick teacher could come up with for a criticle thinking exsercise/assignment. *smh
This is where parents and community members must step up and put this ‘common core’ bs in it’s place!! the trash can! No one with two brain cells to rub together can look at this assignment for anything other then what it is, a denier liberal fantasy and trying to get children to agree with that fantasy. *face palm…that is not teaching or educating…that my friends is indoctrination!

There is no rational reason for this. Almost as if NY Education Commissioner Elia is deriving some sort of sadistic pleasure out of the assignment and the resulting uproar. Like she is ‘getting off’ on it……

I recall another school debated whether to genocide white people. I am not kidding. I forget the name of the school but I remember reading about it and it was black students arguing for it! Conservatives are not kidding when they say liberalism is a mental disorder. Can you imagine the outrage if conservatives controlled academia and were pushing for the genocide of anyone or having offensive debates like that pushed in the classroom. It would be all over the news and we would never hear the end up of it from the likes of CNN and other left wing media outlets. They would be rightfully condemning it big time but when it is one of their ideological own pushing this horrible debate you hear nothing but silence from the left or them saying it is good idea.
