How the Democrats became the anti-Israel party

[the_ad id=”87125″]

All of the evil that befell this country can be traced back to the emergence of the New Left in the mid-‘1960s.

the New Left. The left, and most especially the Jewish left, are the Democrats on the vanguard of the new antisemitism.  And Jewish leftwing groups such as Jewish Voice for Peace and J Street are the most vicious and repulsive Jew-haters, whose mission is to destroy the state of Israel. Newspapers such as the Jewish Forward have taken a page from the judenrat of Germany, but these vicious traitors don’t even have a gun pointed at their heads. Jewish lay leadership in the USA has been weak and impotent in the face of the left’s growing antisemitism.

Story continues below advertisement

What GR reader Mark Z says is spot on: “What the article says that is very true, is that no matter how much the Democrats betray Israel, the U.S Jewish community continues to support the party en mass. They also continue to invite Democrats to their events. AIPAC, for example, publicly spoke out against the Iran deal, and Obama’s last minute betrayal of Israel at the UN. Nancy Pelosi supported both these acts of betrayal, and yet AIPAC invited Pelosi to speak at their policy conference, as someone who “supports” Israel. The reality is that Pelosi (and others like her) just want Jewish money. NO ONE who loves Israel (like you and I) should support that party. NO ONE!”

Democrats Turn Against Israel

In 1972 ours was the first party to back moving the U.S. Embassy to Jerusalem.

Wall Street Journal, March 19, 2017:

Rep. Keith Ellison’s selection as deputy chairman of the Democratic National Committee is the latest ratification of our party’s turn away from Israel. Mr. Ellison, who complained in 2010 that “United States foreign policy in the Middle East is governed by what is good or bad through a country of seven million people,” narrowly lost a bid for DNC chairman, then was chosen by acclamation as deputy.

The Democrats used to be the pro-Israel party. President Truman recognized the Jewish state within minutes of its independence in 1948. In 1972 the convention that nominated George McGovern ratified the first major-party platform to support moving the U.S. Embassy to Jerusalem. The Republicans didn’t follow until 1996.

A lot has changed for the Democrats in 45 years. President Obama created an atmosphere of outright hostility between the U.S. and Israel. He made a nuclear deal with Iran and refused to veto the United Nations Security Council resolution in December that condemned settlements in the disputed West Bank.

Hillary Clinton might have been an improvement, but her commitment to Israel has long been questioned. As secretary of state, she referred to Israeli settlements as “illegitimate.” In 2015 she had to reassure donors to her presidential campaign that she still supported Israel. Even during Bill Clinton’s administration, pro-Israel Democrats worried that Mrs. Clinton would influence her husband in the wrong direction.

Then there’s Sen. Bernie Sanders, who as a presidential candidate in April 2016 accused Israel of being “indiscriminate” in “attacks against civilian areas” when defending itself against rockets fired by terrorists from Gaza. Mr. Sanders received 43% of Democratic primary votes.

How did this happen? There was once an inexorable link between support for Israel and for the civil-rights movement. Both were responses to invidious discrimination—anti-Semitism and racism. Starting in the mid-1960s, however, an anti-Israel minority emerged in the form of the New Left. These groups—such as the Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee, Students for a Democratic Society, and the Black Panthers—saw Israelis as oppressors and Palestinians as engaged in a “just struggle for liberation” as Panthers founder Huey P. Newton put it.

In the 1970s elements of the left became steadily more hostile to Israel. A turning point came in 1975, when the U.N. passed a resolution equating Zionism with racism. That provided an intellectual and political opening for those who wanted to drive a wedge between supporters of Israel and of civil rights.

An organization called Basic—Black Americans to Support Israel Committee—was formed to condemn the resolution. “We seek to defend democracy in the Mideast, and therefore we support Israel,” the civil-rights leader Bayard Rustin declared. Unfortunately, that was the last time the organized Jewish and black communities worked together.

In 1979 President Carter fired U.N. Ambassador Andrew Young, the first African-American to hold that position, for violating U.S. policy by meeting with a representative of the Palestine Liberation Organization. Mr. Young’s dismissal led several black leaders to break with their Jewish allies on Israel.

In 1984 Jesse Jackson, who’d publicly embraced PLO head Yasser Arafat five years earlier, ran for the Democratic presidential nomination. A Washington Post story about his difficult relationship with Jews quoted him as using the slur “Hymie” and calling New York City “Hymietown.” Mr. Jackson won 3.3 million votes in the primaries. He ran again in 1988 and more than doubled the total, to 6.9 million— another sign of the party’s slow shift.
There are still pro-Israel Democrats, but they are beleaguered and equivocal. New York Sen. Chuck Schumer, now the minority leader, described himself in 2010 as the Senate’s protector of Israel: “My name . . . comes from a Hebrew word. It comes from the word shomer, which mean guardian.” But how effectively has he played that role?

In 2015 Mr. Schumer was one of four Senate Democrats to vote against Mr. Obama’s Iran deal. But killing it would have taken 13 Democrats, and Politico reported Mr. Schumer phoned Democratic colleagues to “assure them he would not be whipping opposition to the deal.” Mr. Schumer—whose Brooklyn apartment building has been protested by leftist opponents of President Trump—was also an early backer of Mr. Ellison for the party chairmanship.

One reason Democrats have continued the move away from Israel is that Jewish voters haven’t exacted a price for it. Exit polls in 2016 found they supported Mrs. Clinton over Mr. Trump, 71% to 23%, in line with their historic levels of Democratic support.

There’s still an opportunity here for the GOP. Especially if Mr. Trump delivers on his promise to move the U.S. Embassy to Jerusalem, the Jewish vote could start trending Republican. Unless Democrats reaffirm their support for Israel, many lifelong party members—ourselves included—may decide that the time has come to find new political affiliations.

Mr. Stein, who held elective office in New York between 1969 and 1994, is now a business consultant. Mr. Schoen served as a political adviser and pollster for President Clinton, 1994-2000.

I saw this coming as early as 1970. I was a leftist then, so was in on the early discussions. Around that time, a topic in the MSM was about America’s ideals, especially the claim that a true American roots for the underdog. It was used to explain why the government was in the Vietnam War. South Vietnam was the underdog, said the government. The left, however, took that “virtue” of rooting for the underdog, and began seeing the Palestinians as the underdog against “mighty” Israel, overlooking the fact that the Muslims greatly outnumbered the Israeli’s. We used to have discussions like this around our student union table. I was a bit alarmed; apparently I was not completely converted to the Left. Perhaps I was the proverbial canary, but I saw the anti-seminism start to simmer. It was one of the reasons I pulled out of the Left and became an independent. It took me 15 years to overcome all of the leftist brainwashing. By the late 1980s I was able to see that the left had created a strawman for the conservative. However, I began to realize slowly that real conservatives weren’t anything like the strawman. Sadly, the people I left behind still believe their strawman to this day. Back in 1970 I wondered how long it would take before people would open their eyes and see the anti-jewish Left for what it is. Well, it’s taken 47 years to get to this point. I never understood how American jews didn’t see it coming. Such is the blindness of the Left.

To me the key word in this article, used only once, was “anti-Semitism.” This word has been presented against everything Jewish for eons. Though I see the Jewish community as tending to be non-violent and supportive of everything anti-racist, especially in recent history, and productive and industrious, and willing to help the poor, they are still hated simply because theirs is the Jewish culture. Today, the Jews are dealing with the anti-Semitism promoted actively by the Muslim world. The hate they of the Islamic world exhibit almost causes the Nazi conduct to pale by comparison. Though they control substantial land masses, they refuse to accept the tiny state of Israel as a Jewish state and if they had their way would kill all the Jewish citizens of Israel and throughout the world. Their belief system is an abomination as it refers to the Jewish culture. Describing their belief system as if it were one of peace is like stating that the Nazi’s were a political party of peace. The fact is that this country should not trust the political belief system which is Islam anymore than we would trust the other “ism’s” of Nazism, Fascism or communism, and now I would add the Democratic party to that list of unreasonable believers. Those of the Jewish culture need to revise their view of the Democratic party and recognize that the only chance for any sought of peace is with and thru Trump. I personally believe that all those who call Mr. Trump a racist are not only fools and liars, but they are looking into a mirror, but seem to be unable to see themselves.

pamela, the 1960’s left is godless, just like the french, and they share the same fate. they literally hate christians and jews and their God, and thus they despise Israel. they have embraced muslims because allah is about as real as alladin, hence the new name of the democrat-muslim party.

I don’t understand how they can align themselves with those that want to destroy Israel and eventually Jews that support them.
God is consistent. He ALWAYS has a REMNANT of faithful Jews. Perhaps it is the remnant the Bible always speaks about. All I can say,is thank GOD for Ms. Geller. God must be proud of her. She is tenacious.

Alot of anti-Zionist Jews are naive about world politics. They don’t understand who they are, in terms of being Jewish. They are persuaded by celebritys like Richard Gere, George Clooney and his Pro-Palestine wife Amal. Many of these young Jews come from non-observant Jewish homes. They seem to embrace J Streets anti-Israel/Jewish sentiments without much questioning. J Street also deceives followers by reassuring them, they are also pro-Israel. However, most people familiar with mid-east know that J Street tactics will kill the Jewish State of Israel.

Hi Felix: Bernie Sanders was born of Jewish parents. He is also married to a gentile. I don’t condemn Jews who intermarry, my own sister did. However, back in the 1940’s-50’s when Bernie intermarried, it was a practice highly condemned by Jewish clergy and Jews in general. My grandparents would have lit candles for the dead, had one of their kids or grandchildren intermarried. I’m not sure how Bernie’s friends and relatives reacted, but I would guess his Jewish identity would have started cooling down around the time he decided to intermarry. It is a shame, the bad influence he has on young Jewish liberals who love his idealism/socialism. His intense desire to write anti-Israel position into the Democratic platform made me ill. He maintains we are not fair to Palestinians. Excuse me, every single country in the United Nations was opposed to Israel! He admits all his positions on Israel are informed by J Street! Bernie and his J Streeters have got to be driven out

Bernie is only 74. In the 40s-50s he was a child. He probably married in the 60s, when so many of us were seeking new experience and (speaking for myself) running from the stifling institutional Judaism of our families/communities.

All of this can be found in the manifesto of the so-called “New Left” by reading the Port Huron Statement, a screed primarily authored in 1962 by Tom Hayden, ex-husband of former actress Jane Fonda, a.k.a. “Hanoi Hannah”. In it you will also read about the avowed takeover of universities and other “loci of power”, as they term it.

The majority of Jews in America, unfortunately, think of themselves as “human beings” first – and Jews last.

In politics, they support the Democrats, in spite of, and in some cases, because of the anti-Semitism of the Democrat party.

In the congress, virtually every single Jew voted for the Iran deal, save one freshman Republican in the House, and of course Schumer, who opposed the deal with a wink and a nod.

That deal was, as Ben Stein rightly pointed out, “a death warrant for Israel.”

Bernie Sanders voted against funding the missile shield for Israel during the Gaza war, and Schumer again, as has been pointed out here and elsewhere, supported Farrakhan flunky Ellison to chair the Democrat party.

In the arts the Jewish “elites” supported the Metropolitan Opera’s “The Death of Klinghoffer” – wherein a chorus sang hosannas at the throwing of a crippled, elderly Jew overboard on an ocean Liner.

Contributions to the Met, in spite of protests by some small and forlorn groups, were not affected in the least. The director of the Met, and the librettist for the opera were Jewish.

Many persons of Jewish descent, as Pam Geller has noted, are among the most vociferous critics of Israel, just as they are often hostile to traditional Jewish customs.

They are, in a word, traitors, but they are not self-hating – not at all.

Rather, they resent those Jews who do insist on loyalty to their Jewish heritage.

And there’s the rub – for that insistence constitutes a threat to their own assimilation – into a Left that can only dawn, as Karl Marx said, when both the Jew and society itself are liberated from Judaism.
