The problem with “hate crimes” is it tries to discern the intent of the mind and heart, and only God has access to those. The justice system should judge by the letter of the law, without trying to determine who might be guilty of a “hate crime”. Murder is murder, regardless as to the motivation, and the punishment should be uniform. This goes with all other crimes as well. Why you did it is unimportant, other than establishing motive. The fact that the law was broken is what is important, and punishment should be on that basis alone.
