The footage, which is believed to have first emerged in May 2016, allegedly shows the teacher striking his student with a slipper during the class at the Turkish school. The appalling footage also shows the teacher hitting the youngster despite his pleas for him to stop the beating.
Directorate of Religious Affairs (Diyanet) head Mehmet Gormez condemned the beating during the Koran class at the Caybasi Koran Boarding School in the Marmara region of north west Turkey.
An investigation was ordered and launched by Diyanet after the video came to prominence.
A shocking video of a Islamic school teacher beating a student led to the man’s arrest
I just beat him once with a slipper and that was when they videoed me
The teacher was arrested on January 15 in Sakarya’s Erenler district, according to state-run news group Anadoulu Agency.According to the report, the man who remains unnamed, was detained at his home after the investigation was launched after the public’s angry reaction to the clip.In response to the furious reaction, Nejdet Arman, the deputy mufti of Sakarya, said the investigation had been launched after a petition by the child’s uncle.
He added that the parents had not filed any complaints about the beating, with the 12-year-old victim claiming his father did not believe him.
The student alleges he has been beaten 10 to 15 times
The suspect confessed to his crimes during an interview with police, he said: “The student was being trained as a Koran reciter from June 2015 to May 2016.“I did not slap him or beat him up 10 to 15 times, as claimed.“I just beat him once with a slipper and that was when they videoed me.
“I beat him because he had not done his homework. I made a mistake.”
Mr Gormez apologised to the children who were exposed to the events in the classroom and on social media.
He said: “Necessary legal and moral measures have been taken to prevent situations like this from happening.
“A society that harms its children cannot present a solid future for them and unless one does not prioritise the wellbeing of a child, then they cannot protect divine trust.”
