“Ismail Berdiev, the chairman of the North Caucasus Muslim Coordinating Center, told the radio station Govorit Moskva that female circumcision is a healthy, ‘purely Dagestani custom.'”
Purely Dagestani? But the media liars always tell us it’s a purely African custom. Now it turns out that it is in Dagestan, too. It is in many other places as well, because it is Islamic: authorities will never be able to address the problem adequately because they’re too busy going out their way to say that it is not Islamic in practice Female genital mutilation (FGM) or clitoridectomy is an Islamic tradition, rampant in the Muslim world. Dissemblers and deceivers claim that FGM is cultural phenomenon, not religious. FGM is an Islamic cultural phenomenon. FGM is found only within and adjacent to Muslim communities (source: Gerry Mackie, “Ending Footbinding and Infibulation: A Convention Account”, American Sociological Review.)
This Facebook page by Muslimas proudly supports it.
But to speak out against Islamic FGM is “islamophobic.” The fact is that Muhammad justified it: “A woman used to perform circumcision in Medina. The Prophet (peace_be_upon_him) said to her: Do not cut severely as that is better for a woman and more desirable for a husband.” (Sunan Abu Dawud 41.5251). And the Muslims on this Facebook page cite his sanction.
There is also justification for the practice in Islamic law:
“Circumcision is obligatory (for every male and female) (by cutting off the piece of skin on the glans of the penis of the male, but circumcision of the female is by cutting out the bazr ‘clitoris’ [this is called khufaadh ‘female circumcision’]).” — ‘Umdat al-Salik e4.3, translated by Mark Durie, The Third Choice, p. 64

And if you can, please contribute to Geller Report. YOU make the work possible.
Earlier today, Ismail Berdiev, the chairman of the North Caucasus Muslim Coordinating Center, told the radio station Govorit Moskva that female circumcision is a healthy, “purely Dagestani custom.”
“As far as I know,” Berdiev explained on air, “it’s done to calm a woman’s zeal somewhat. There’s absolutely no health problem here.”
Berdiev was responding to a new report by the organization “Legal Initiative,” which found that female circumcision is practiced in the certain areas of Dagestan, one of Russia’s predominantly Muslim republics in the North Caucasus. Legal Initiative found cases in remote villages where girls under the age of three (and sometimes as old as 11) were circumcised.
The ritual—removing all or part of the clitoris and sometimes the labia—is carried out of reduce sexual sensitivity, in order to “prepare” women for their role as wife in a patriarchal family. The surgery is conducted at home by a religious figure….
