Jihad in Thailand: 27 Confirmed Dead in Islamic Bombings of Hindu Shrine Popular with Tourists and Thai Buddhists, 12 Dead, Scores Injured in Nation’s Capital

273

UPDATE 2:45 pm: Chai reports:

Thai language TV (Nation TV Channel) reporting live at this moment from one hospital only (i.e.: not the total casualties – just at this one hospital):
19 dead
123 injured
Of the dead at this one hospital, 11 are tourists from various countries including China.
The Chief of Police for Bangkok announced live that there was only large bomb and that no others were found. This is contrary to some initial reports.
The 123 injured being treated at this one hospital indicates that the overall number of casualties is much higher than originally reported.
As with previous large multiple casualty bombings in the South, it is chaos at first and takes some time to filter the various reports and arrive at a more accurate picture.

UPDATE: Bangkok Post reporting 15 dead, 80+ injured. Two bombs set off together and other bombs found and defused. Possible multi-purpose attack against shrine and to bring down the Skytrain rapid transit, as one of the bombs was attached to a support.

A Thai reader, Chai, writes me:

The bomb was directed at people lining up for the Hindu temple. I’ve been there and it is a popular tourist attraction for Thai Buddhists and foreign tourists alike. Terrible number of dead and wounded with body parts all over the street according to BBC.

BBC says another bomb was disarmed before it went off. Perhaps a second device to catch the first responders.

A bomb on a motorcycle exploded on Monday just outside a major tourist attraction in the Thai capital, killing at least 12 people, police and a rescue worker said.

Thailand has been plagued  by Muslim insurgency in the predominantly Buddhist country’s south. The objective is the same as Muslims all over the world waging their savage jihad — an Islamic state.

The BBC report:

Bangkok bomb: Deadly blast rocks Thailand capital

A bomb has exploded close to a shrine in the centre of the Thai capital, Bangkok, police say.

Local reports suggest at least 12 people have died and at least 20 more have been injured.

The BBC’s Jonathan Head, who is at the scene, says there is a huge amount of chaos, with body parts scattered everywhere.

The attack took place close to the Erawan Shrine in the capital’s central Chidlom district.

The explosion occurred at about 19:00 local time (12:00 GMT), with police saying it may have been caused by a motorcycle bomb.

No-one has yet said they carried out the attack.

Some reports said foreign tourists may have been among the casualties.

The Bangkok Post quotes police as saying at least one more bomb has been made safe by officers in the Ratchaprasong area.
