Pamela Geller, TIME Magazine: A Response to My Critics—This Is a War

109

The cartoon contest was needlessly provocative? No — murdering cartoonists is needlessly provocative.

It was the jihadis, not I, who made the cartoons a flash point. If we surrender on that point and stop drawing Muhammad, we’ve established a precedent of surrendering to violent Sharia enforcement, and once established, we will be made to reinforce it again and again.

Did anyone think these 2 gunmen would have lived quiet lives as peaceable and loyal Americans if we hadn’t held the contest? They would have waged jihad elsewhere, on a less protected target, and killed more people.

Jason Andrew—Getty Images Pamela Geller is the President of the American Freedom Defense Initiative (AFDI) and publisher of PamelaGeller.com.
Some are saying I provoked this attack. But to kowtow to violent intimidation will only encourage more of it.

Sunday in Garland, Texas, a police officer was wounded in a battle that is part of a longstanding war: the war against the freedom of speech. Some people are blaming me for the Garland shooting — so I want to address that here

The shooting happened at my American Freedom Defense Initiative Muhammad Art Exhibit and Cartoon Contest, when two Islamic jihadists armed with rifles and explosives drove up to the Curtis Culwell Center in Garland and attempted to gain entry to our event, which was just ending. We were aware of the risk and spent thousands of dollars on security — and it paid off. The jihadis at our free speech event were not able to achieve their objective of replicating the massacre at the offices of the Charlie Hebdo satirical magazine last January — and to go it one better in carnage. They were not able to kill anyone. We provided enormous security, in concert with the superb Garland police department. The men who took the aspiring killers down may have saved hundreds of lives.

And make no mistake: If it weren’t for the free-speech conference, these jihadis would have struck somewhere else — a place where there was less security, like the Lindt cafe in Australia or the Hyper Cacher Kosher supermarket in Paris.

So, why are some people blaming me? They’re saying: “Well, she provoked them! She got what she deserved!” They don’t remember, or care to remember, that as the jihadis were killing the Muhammad cartoonists in Paris, their friend and accomplice was murdering Jews in a nearby kosher supermarket. Were the Jews asking for it? Did they “bait” the jihadis? Were they “provoking” them?

Are the Jews responsible for the Nazis? Are the Christians in the Middle East responsible for being persecuted by Muslims?

Drawing Muhammad offends Islamic jihadists? So does being Jewish. How much accommodation of any kind should we give to murderous savagery? To kowtow to violent intimidation will only encourage more of it.

This is a war.

Now, after the Charlie Hebdo attack, and after the Garland attack, what are we going to do? Are we going to surrender to these monsters?

The attack in Garland showed that everything my colleagues and I have been warning about regarding the threat of jihad, and the ways in which it threatens our liberties, is true. Islamic law, Sharia, with its death penalty for blasphemy, today constitutes a unique threat to the freedom of speech and liberty in general.

Freedom of speech is the foundation of a free society. Without it, a tyrant can wreak havoc unopposed, while his opponents are silenced.

Putting up with being offended is essential in a pluralistic society in which people differ on basic truths. If a group will not stand for being offended without resorting to violence, that group will rule unopposed, while everyone else lives in fear.

Islamic law as it’s interpreted by extremists forbids criticism of Islam, the Quran, and Muhammad. If they cannot be criticized in the United States, we are in effect accepting Islamic law as overriding the freedom of speech. This would establish Muslims as a protected class and prevent honest discussion of how Islamic jihadists use the texts and teachings of Islam to justify violence.

Some say that “hate speech” should be censored. But what constitutes “hate speech” is a subjective judgment that is unavoidably influenced by the political perspective of the one doing the judging.

Allowing this sort of censorship would mean nothing less civilizational suicide. Many in the media and academic elite assign no blame to an ideology that calls for death to blasphemers — i.e., those who criticize or offend Islam. Instead, they target and blame those who expose this fanaticism. If the cultural elites directed their barbs and attacks at the extremist doctrine of jihad, the world would be a vastly safer place.

You can try to avoid reality, but you cannot avoid the consequences of avoiding reality. The shootings in Garland, Paris, and Copenhagen targeting defenders of free speech, and the raging jihad across the Middle East, Africa, and Europe, are the disastrous consequences of avoiding reality.

I encourage all Americans to watch the videos of the Garland event and see what Islamic supremacists wish to silence: basic, elemental free speech arguments.

But we are unbowed. Even when the venue was in lockdown and hundreds of attendees were ushered down into the auditorium, the crowd was singing the Star Spangled Banner and G-d Bless America. In the face of fear, they were staunchly and uniquely American.

To learn who rules over you, simply find out whom you cannot criticize. If the international media had run the Danish cartoons back in 2005, none of this could have happened. The jihadis wouldn’t have been able to kill everyone. But by self-censoring, the media gave the jihadis the power they have today.

We must take back our freedom.

Pamela Geller brought her hate speech to Garland Texas and the
authorities there have danced all around calling it everything but what
it is and they failed to arrest her for spewing the hate speech it is.
Hate speech is not protected under the first amendment…
Free speech is the right to protest against the government without fear of
repercussion. Anything beyond that isn’t protected by the
Constitution… Under the law, hate speech is a communication that
carries no meaning other than the expression of hatred for some group,
especially in circumstances in which the communication is likely to
provoke violence. It’s an incitement to hatred primarily against a group
of persons defined in terms of race, ethnicity, national origin,
gender, religion, sexual orientation, and the like… Hate speech can be
any form of expression regarded as offensive to racial, ethnic and
religious groups and other discrete minorities or to women…

Where Pamela Geller crossed the line, was that she hired security
for the event ($50,000 worth of police protection) because she knew her
speech might “provoke violence”, which it did and implicated her as having the
forethought that she was knowingly using hate speech.

Oh really. You are full of it. Go ahead and put a bumper sticker on your car that doesn’t coincide with the politically correct flavor of the moment and see what happens. Put a political sign in your yard that doesn’t coincide with the politically correct in your neighborhood. Wear a t-shirt that say “infidel.” Put a “I Support Israel” bumper sticker on your car. See what happens then. Just because someone doesn’t align with you doesn’t make it hate speech. But of course, the left wants to paint everyone as “haters” that won’t bow to them.

Sideswiper;

As a liberal, I feel duly authorized as well as completely compelled to state the following; you should remove the first five letters of your handle and replace them with the following letters, A, S, S.

Wake up dude or dudette, you’re on the wrong side of this. These muslim monsters are attempting to slowly whittle away at our rights. A cartoon contest is not hate speech. Would you say the same for a cartoon contest in which everyone tried to draw Christ, Buddha, Aman Rah? Of course you wouldn’t because none of these contests would stir up murderers. It is only one religion that authorizes the murder of so-call blasphemers. And I’ll give you two guesses as to which one. The fact that Pamela had to hire security for a cartoon contest tells you all you need to know. Not that Pamela is some irresponsible provocateur but that those incensed to murder by a cartoon need to be given a lesson in the 1st amendment. And that lesson needs to be repeated and repeated and repeated until all the slow learners have figured out what free speech is all about.

Hate speech? Really? A cartoon? Jeez!!

Side: Under the Constitution, there is no such thing as ‘hate speech.’ “Hate speech’ laws are a recent invention of the Left to force their particular worldview down everyone else’s throats. If hate speech laws attempted to force-feed obnoxious Right-wing worldviews on us, we would regard them as equally evil. The only free speech is unrestricted. What you and the left advocate is not free speech; its is censored speech. The difference is as great as that between a mouse and a house.

If Pamela has no right to speak out, then neither do any of us.

Go ahead, hate me. It’s okay.

How is it “hate speech” to mock a person who lived fourteen centuries ago (if he was a real person at all)?

The fact that Muslims claim to find such mockery “hurtful” is their problem. They have NO MORAL RIGHT to demand that everyone else “respect” a creature who was so evil and brought so much pain to the world.

The whole bloody, aggressive, hateful, oppressive creed of Islam is hurtful to my sense of decency and humanity. Shouldn’t infidels be protected from the hurtful (and often murderous) existence of Islam?

Sorry dude I don’t need talk of any pardons – Maybe you do if that’s what you fear – Life’s too short for me to choose to live it wallowing in hate and fear… The odds of me being killed by bad cop are far greater than being killed by any Islamic or domestic terrorist…

1. There were at least 155 Americans killed by police officers in the
United States in 2011. That means that you were more than 9 times more likely to be killed by a cop than by a terrorist…“Since 9/11, foreign-inspired terrorism has claimed about two dozen lives in the United States. (Meanwhile, more than 100,000 have been killed in gun homicides and more than 400,000 in motor-vehicle accidents.) “

2. Poisoning from prescription drugs is even more likely to kill you than a car crash. The CDC stated in 2011 that – in the majority of states – your prescription meds are more likely to kill you than any other source of injury. So your meds are thousands of times more likely to kill you than Al Qaeda.

3. You are 35,079 times more likely to die from heart disease than from a terrorist attack

4. You are 33,842 times more likely to die from cancer than from a terrorist attack

5. The 2011 Report on Terrorism from the National Counter Terrorism Center notes that Americans are just as likely to be “crushed to death by their televisions or furniture each year” as they are to be killed by terrorists.

Islam is an aggressively macho warrior cult. War is inevitable wherever Islam comes into contact with kuffars. It always has been, and always will be. As Churchill pointed out, peaceful coexistence is no more possible with Islam than with a pack of rabid dogs.

Most religions have a softer feminine aspect (eg Virgin Mary) but all trace of the feminine has been eradicated from Islam to give something which is consequently only half human.

Predatory and domineering, Islam is a brutal, hypermasculine, barbarian, tribal warrior cult that glories in machismo, murder, mutilation, rape, pedophilia, genocide, terrorism, destruction and anarchy. Women, girls and all the feminine aspects human nature are chattelised and subjugated. Weakness is despised and seen as ripe for predation.

A woman or girl is to be owned, not treated as an equal. If she punctures the fragile inflated ego of her owner, then she must be killed to restore the man’s ‘honor’ among his peers. Kuffar women and children are war booty.

Islam is predatory, bullying, aggressively arrogant, swaggering wife-beating thuggery, which is the destroyer of all that is beautiful, spiritual, gentle, innocent and vulnerable.

There is a certain mythology concerning evil beings called Archons. Islam is a perfect representation an Archon-dominated world. Pathologic, brutal, unkind, unforgiving, hating of the human spirit, evoking only the worst possible attributes in people and then using those attributes of further its humanity squashing reach. Islam is other-worldly in its complete lack of humanity. I prefer to believe in archons and demons rather than think that the human race alone is responsible for the rise these monsters.

You know, I agree with the Navy seal man, Bob O’Neil, who killed
the master mind of 9-11, Usama Bin Laden, that this in-your-face Art Contest

If they can deny us the right to create cartoons under threat of violence, then they can tell us to do anything. They can tell you who to worship, when to pray, how to dress, how to think and feel about anything they deem too important for free thought. You become their slave. Is that what you are defending? Amazing that you can’t see the larger picture with this. Why do you hate freedom so?

Maybe Foxnews took it down because they got too many angry conservative people calling in and e-mailing. Foxnews does cave it on many things, like they don’t down talk about the perverted gays.

Now as far as Islam; It’s a demonic false religion from hell. And 60% of Muslim of all the world have not even read the Quran, the book of death. If they could or did many would no longer believe in Islam.

Nobody understands this madness better than Pamela Geller. These bigots have turned our basic liberty of free expression into a provocation. But it is they who are provoking us with their preposterous demands. Our right to free expression has now become the proverbial chip on their shoulder. Bullies! That’s what they are, looking for a fight! We don’t tell you who to worship, and you don’t tell us who to draw! Got it?

There’s this perverse need on the part of certain politicians and media to place the moral burden on the victims rather than those doing the victimizing. “Why does Pam provoke them so!” is the cry. But the provocation is solely in the hands of those making the obnoxious and discourteous demand, a demand that is obviously unenforceable and beyond the bounds of good taste and reason. What next, the mere thought of a cartoon will offend?

These muslims aren’t even close to where they need to be for assimilation into our society. They are going to have to readjust their thinking to at least a normal child’s level first. And if they can’t, then the only recourse is to expel them from our country and tear down the ugly mosques where they teach this ignorant, infantile filth.

All in favor, say aye!

Hi The Greatest Freedom,

Jews against Zionism

They’re numerous, outspoken, and range from secular to orthodox to one group calling itself “True Torah Jews Against Zionism.”

They believe that “traditional” Jews don’t support Zionism, an ideology they call “contrary to Jewish law and beliefs and the teachings of the Holy Torah.” They say Zionism:

— advocates “a political and military end to the Jewish exile;”
— fosters “pseudo-Judaism” based on secular nationalism;
— coercively seeks “armed materialism” in place of “a Divine and Torah centered understanding;”
— endangers all Jews worldwide;
— wants to disassociate Jews and traditional Judaism from ideological Zionism; and
— calls Israel a “Zionist State,” not a Jewish one.

As a lifelong liberal I have to say bravo to Pamela. I was one of those guys who mocked the folks on FOX News for throwing around the word islamofacsist every chance that had. Well, thanks to events like Charlie Hebdo and the stomach turning atrocities of isis and especially thanks to people like you Pamela, who’ve understood from the beginning what kind of maniacs we are dealing with in these belligerent muslims, I now see islam for what it truly is: a dangerous cult full of people infected with a trojan mind-virus that allows (and internally justifies) them to kill whoever they chose whenever that person crosses some ridiculously low threshold of personal or religious insult. Such people are completely at odds with 21st century civilization. I’ve had to apologize to all my conservative friends for accusing them of being islomophobic in the past, when in fact it was I who was islamo-ignorant. Keep up the great work. These crazy misguided people need to be desensitized to the 1st amendment. Which, judging by the events in Garland over the weekend, may require careful consultation with the 2nd amendment.

What if some Muslims demand that pork hot dogs be banned from baseball games or there will be bombs at some. Gets ignored at first but then a bomb goes off at one. O’Reilly would probably say, “well, we don’t have to have pork hot dogs there, and it would be ill advised.” Then it’s all sport events, and then sharia courts as in Britain are demanded, then “hate speech” laws against defaming Muhammad or Islam must be enacted…
Will we keep listening to the wisdom of those who say we must so respect Muslim sensitivities?

Those in the western world who defend Islam, out of some misguided empathy, should experience life in a Muslim country where there is no freedom of speech, no freedom of religion, gays are thrown off buildings & then stoned, and raped women need 4 male witnesses to get justice. If we want to see where our country is headed, all we have to do is to look at Western Europe – where our founding ideals originated. We can’t compromise on our Bill of Rights, as the Europeans have compromised by allowing Sharia law to be practiced.

What is slowly happening is outlined at clarionproject.org and called Gradualism: it’s the Muslim Brotherhood’s long-term strategy to implement sharia worldwide: (http://www.clarionproject.org/analysis/gradualism-islamist-strategy-victory)
In 2004, the FBI seized a Brotherhood strategy document about its “work
in America as a kind of grand jihad in eliminating and destroying Western
civilization from within.” It describes 5 phases:
1. The “secret establishment of leadership”
2. “…gradual appearance on the public scene.” This phase calls for “infiltrating various sectors of government,” “gaining religious institutions,” “gaining public support and sympathy,” and “establishing a shadow government.”
3. “Escalation phase.” This focuses on “utilizing mass media” and the document says that this stage is “currently in progress.” Unfortunately, we do not know when this was written.
4. “Open confrontation with the government through…political pressure.” It also calls for “training on the use of weapons domestically” and says that there are “noticeable activities in this regard.” Could this have something to do with the Jamaat ul-Fuqra training camps on American soil?
5. The final phase: “Seizing power to establish their Islamic Nation under which all parties and Islamic groups are united.”

The common thread I see in these attacks, Charlie Hebdo, Garland, Aurora, Tucson, Columbine, Sandy Hook, Virginia Tech, Norway etc…is that the attackers were gun owners.

The common thread I see is that multiple murders occurred when the attackers were the only people in the vicinity with guns. In Norway, no one else on the whole island had a gun — and scores of people were killed.

By contrast, the only people who died in Garland were the attackers — because other people had guns.

So how were the Garland would-be attackers stopped? Man. Also, here are a couple bullets of truth for you: the Sandy Hook shooter was not a gun owner; he stole the guns from his mother. And the high school kids who killed their fellow students at Columbine were not gun owners because they weren’t old enough.

Please retract your false statements.

Liberals are sooooooooo brave when it comes to making fun of Christians. Because nothing will happen to them if they do. They wet their pants at the thought of making fun of Muslims. Criticizing Pamela is much safer and they think Muslims will give them a pass when head chopping time comes along. I trust no Liberal. They would lick the sandals of a Muslim oppressor and turn me in if it meant saving their lousy hide.

People do not understand that the muslim rally in Garland after the slaughters in Paris was a declaration of conquest. They were celebrating the attack on free speech and declaring victory and domination over freedom of speech. We cannot let that go unanswered because muslims would view that as capitulation and submission. We can never submit, nor can we ever be seen as submitting to islam. Muslims erect mosques on the rubble of the religious sites of those they conquer, which is why this contest had to be held in the very same building as the “support islam” rally was held. Ms. Geller, you certainly took it to them.

And for people who think she was baiting them, so what? They didn’t have to take the bait, did they? No, they didn’t have to take the bait.

So… Here’s some free speech –
When one person suffers from a delusion it is called insanity.
When many people suffer from a delusion it is called Religion…
The common denominator of all religions is mass delusion… Organized religion has been and still is about delusion, control, servitude, fear, punishment, xenophobia, bigotry, most wars, the Inquisitions, the Crusades, 9/11, arranged marriages to minors, blowing up girls’ schools, the suppression of women and homosexuals, fatwas, jihads, ISIS, the Taliban, the IRA, Boko Haram, Al-Qaeda, the KKK, ethnic cleansing, honor rape, torture, burning witches, beheadings, suicide bombings, condoning slavery, the systematic fucking of children by priests and TV preachers claiming some empirically unprovable mystical sky-daddy said for you to send them all of your money…

Sideswiper, while I generally agree with you that religion is a form of mass delusion, you are deluding yourself if you refuse to see that all delusions are not equal. You create a horrendous and unforgivable false equivalence when you lump the KKK, raping priests, and greedy TV evangelist in with isis, the taliban and boko haram. Islamic jihdists (and make no mistake, as dictated by the koran every muslim is in jihad against non-believers) are in an uber-league of own when it comes to pure and bloody brutality. They are plotting to take over the world. They have an instruction manual for doing so; it’s called the koran. Anyone or anything that gets in their way will be destroyed. The level of brutality and general joy in the misery of non-believers that muslims display far outstrips the naked depravity of even the nazis. There is no evidence that the nazis enjoyed carrying out the holocaust. It was a job. And being Germans, they carried it out efficiently. Isis, boko haram, the taliban, on the other hand revel in beheading and in the burning of people alive. It is clear in their videos that they are just having a grand old time as they saw through the neck of some poor christian or set fire to a caged man.

What you and the rest of the country need to come to understand is that these people, much like the Terminator robots from the movies, will not stop until the whole world bows before their delusion. People like Pamela are trying to wake people up from the media-induced stupor and to show them that the time NOW to start drawing some lines and setting some boundaries. They can be stopped NOW if we hold firm to the Constitution; ALL of the Constitution. We will not and can not budge an inch when it comes to the first amendment. Religious maniacs must not be allowed to dictate to people what can and can not be drawn. It is incredible that such a thing needs to be pointed out to fellow Americans.

Meanwhille the media continues its monotonous lullaby and people like you continue to spout off ridiculous false equivalencies, too dense or too lazy to understand the true nature of the islamic threat and how it is different and far more dangerous than any threat we’ve ever faced. It is a long term threat. They have plenty of time to use our very freedoms against us. And they can do so only if we let them. WAKE UP!

Whether by design or ignorant bliss, you(and the American media) are apologists for the most monstrous religious murderers in the history of the world. You claim that you are not a fan of religious delusion. Why, then, are you unable to appreciate the magnitude of the islamic mass delusion and the adverse effect it’s having on the world? Oh yeah, because you’re a muslim troll.

God himself doesn’t force any of us to follow His path. That would make us all liars and hypocrites-not true believers/followers. So, why do these people feel they can force and intimidate people into their belief system (under their flawed interpretation of God’s law) and try to convince people this is what God would do? This is fundamentally unlike the God I know. It is only about power, oppression and control; the very antithesis of God. In our little microcosm of a world–all one has to do is consider what works in raising our own children to know that force, intimidation and control don’t work. Love, acceptance, long-suffering and persuasion are generally much more effective. The logic of these people is just not rational.

Thank you for standing strong in the face of militant Islam. Thanks most of all for not wavering when facing the criticism of those who should be your most staunch allies, the press. Either they don’t realize the impact of giving in to Islam, or they are so blinded by their ideology that they are willing to sacrifice the protection the constitution gives them to keep from acknowledging how wrong they are.

The bus ads and the draw Mohammed contest are both provocative, but not needlessly so. We actually need more of the same, more bus ads, more draw Mohammed contests because we need to draw the enemy out of hiding and into the open. Free speech is being threatened and we must do more to ensure that freedom of speech and expression thrive. It is war against not only the Islamists but left-wing nut jobs, both Democrat and Republican, who have forgotten that America is a Constitutional Republic .

As Mark says, I also have more left of center leanings on many issues, but not this one. Ms. Gellar and the artists involved are courageous, and this is a good fight. We are at war. It is unfortunate, but a reality that needs to be faced and dealt with definitively. The minds of people who can behead and burn fellow human beings alive are lost to a shared delusion. They are similar to the core of Nazi’s or any other group intending genocide. It is a primitive mind, an undoing of civilization, a “Lord of the Flies” mentality, and in adults requires a determined, unflinching response to end it.

Here’s the deal

cut paste send to your politicians – usa dot gov – louder voices win in this country! And our politicians are too dumb to see the drip drip drip of islam

15 years ago there were 250 mosques in all USA

Now there are over 1000 most money coming from Saudis to build – we have 2 congressman that are muslim – NYC just declared schools closed for muslim holiday – numerous university don’t support Israel anymore – ( meanwhile Israeli companies create over 300k jobs in usa ) – a muslim university was just created and as they stated the first. — Pearson publishing largest text book company in the world has Saudis as majority owner…

What did Saudis do – put whole chapters in text books in USA about mohmmed….from grades 2 to 12 – search islam in our schools..

There is a lot more but you get the idea – drip drip drip –

Now does any from usa migrate to muslim countries settle in – run for office – build churches synagagoues – temples? No –

Why are they here? why a free christian based country? to assimilate or change? you tell me…….saudis are not shy about intentions to spread islam all over the world..search it…they’re doing a good job. Only you can stop it!!

Muslims are allergic to cartoons of Muhammad because they
want to hide facts. Since Islam was invented by Muhammad by plagiarizing from
the Torah and the Bible, even when Muhammad was alive he strongly opposed any
criticism or discussion because investigation would expose the truth. As for
instance, in the Bible it is said that Abraham took Isaac to be sacrificed at
Mount Moriah. But Muhammad had replaced Isaac and Ishmael was inserted. He
justified many changes in the Koran by a bizarre statement that the Biblical
version is false according to the revelation he got from Allah. What a
ridiculous argument. It is quite obvious that Islam introduced by him 700 years
after the birth of Christianity and the Bible was used as a blueprint to construct events in the Koran. . Critics were silenced by murder and beheading.Arabs knew Muhammad’s antecedents and they refused to accept his new religion and recognize him as a prophet (nabi). His wife and daughters were his first converts, and then his cousin Ali, a freed slave named Zayd, and a wealthy friend named abu Bakr. Arabia which had 70% non-Muslim idol worshiping Arabs, 15% Jews and 15% Christians became 100% Muslim by Muhammad and his followers wiping out others. Why Muslims are allergic to cartoons? Christians remain quiet when immaculate Jesus is defamed by writers like Dan Brown who invent lies and imaginary stories without an iota of evidence.. Why Muslims attack writers and exhibitionists who tell true events in Muhammad’s career such as having many wives, including young girl, Ayisha, the raping of a Jewish woman, Safeya beny Hayey, after killing her father and husband, beheading of Arab tribal leaders and his rampaging hordes looting and pillaging conquered areas? Why don’t they accept facts of history like Germans who accept the crimes of Hitler in their text books?

All religious belief is irrational in the sense that no one has ever provided any proof of god: It’s called “faith.” But most religions teach (not always practice) love, tolerance, and a long list of other virtues. Islam and the Christian (??) Rev. Jeremiah Wright teach hatred Most religions teach us to hate the devil, the embodiment of evil.and to obey the 10 commandments, any infraction of which is deemed “sin.” Islam stands alone. Maybe Islam IS the devil.
