New Jersey: Muslim threw firecrackers at synagogue, shouted “Allahu Akbar” over Passover weekend

The ADL took a moment out of condemning me and other proud Jews and Zionists to remark on this — they appear to be “troubled” by it.

ADL condemns Clifton man who allegedly threw firecrackers at synagogue, shouted “Allahu Akbar,” NJ.com, April 13, 2015

PASSAIC — The Anti-Defamation League (ADL) said it’s “troubled” by an incident over the weekend in which a 21-year-old Clifton man was arrested for allegedly throwing firecrackers at a synagogue while shouting “Allahu Akbar.”

“This troubling incident is a sobering reminder that anti-Semitism has the potential to rear its ugly head, and that New Jersey towns and cities are not immune to anti-Jewish animus,” said ADL New Jersey Regional Director Joshua Cohen in a press statement. “We deplore this despicable and hateful act which affects not only the Jewish community but the community at large.”

Passaic police said 21-year-old Clifton resident Rizek Musheisen was charged with bias intimidation, possession of fireworks, harassment and criminal mischief.

A witness told police they saw a black Nissan with tinted windows drive to the front of the Ahavas Israel Synagogue. A man, later identified by a witness as Musheisen, heaved several lit firecrackers and shouted “Allahu Akbar” (“God is greater”) before getting back in the car and fleeing, according to police.

Authorities said Musheisen acted alone and the three other people in the car were not involved. Firecrackers were found inside the vehicle, police said.

The ADL, which offered assistance to Passaic police as well as security to Jewish institutions in the state, said there were 107 separate acts of anti-Semitic incidents in New Jersey in 2014, including assault, harassment and vandalism.
