Pamela Geller, The American Thinker: The Poo Generation

34

“The Poo Generation“,  By Pamela Geller, The American Thinker
Every generation has unintentional icons – whether it’s Rosie the Riveter, the American flag, Elvis Presley, the motorcycle jacket – ideas that best express the zeitgeist of a time, a generation.

The emoticon found on phones today, of a happily smiling pile of excrement, is just that.  It best exemplifies the low state of the world, of the culture, and of America itself in the age of the primitive.  It signifies America’s rapid decay in the wake of the left’s decades-long war on Americanism, freedom, and individual rights.  The absence of morality – and by morality I mean a code of values – has led to an absence of the good.  And an abundance of poo.

Ayn Rand wrote that a nation’s culture is the sum of the intellectual achievements of individual men, which their fellow citizens have accepted in whole or in part, and which have influenced the nation’s way of life.  Poo.

Story continues below advertisement

Post-9/11 America, and especially America in the Obama presidency, is a different world from America as she was before Obama, and before the left started its long march to destroy this nation.  America today is increasingly anti-freedom, anti-truth, anti-ideas, anti-capitalsim – anti-reason.  A nation built on a morality of reason has all but abandoned its foundational principles.  Public schools and academia produce zombies – goose-steppers like the Hitler Youth – who are militant and violent in their imposition of the leftist/Islamic agenda.  And when they do it, they congratulate themselves about how they have stood up against “fascism” and “intolerance,” when the intolerant fascists are they themselves.  Intellectually, young Americans are the most docile conformists, no matter how vocally and self-righteously they declare themselves free.  They have accepted as dogma all the philosophical beliefs of their elders of the hard left without question or exploration.  A continuing negation of life and self.

The culture is ugly.  The music is ugly, violent, and misogynistic.  Every crime drama and suspense series is rife with the most unimaginable gore.  Game of Thrones, Law and Order (Sex Crimes), American Horror Story – they’re all devoid of humanity and morality.  Devoid of goodness.  It’s a cultural rout.  It’s not that the line between good and evil has been blurred – it’s nonexistent.  We are living in a cultural free-for-all, or more accurately, a free fall.

Pain, blame, victimhood are the ideals.  When Pharrell performed his confection of a tune “Happy” at the Grammys, he was compelled to turn it into a dirge.  A bright, happy, sparkling little jewel of a tune was accompanied by ugly political rhetoric and costume, #handsup, hoodies, and a porter/bellman costume for Pharrell.

“Happiness is a state of non-contradictory joy – a joy without penalty or guilt, a joy that does not clash with any of your values and does not work for your own destruction, not the joy of escaping from your mind, but of using your mind’s fullest power, not the joy of faking reality, but of achieving values that are real, not the joy of a drunkard, but of a producer. Happiness is possible only to a rational man, the man who desires nothing but rational goals, seeks nothing but rational values and finds his joy in nothing but rational actions.”  That’s from John Galt’s speech in Atlas Shrugged.  Has America ever been farther from that ideal?

What better icon for such a culture of terror than a pile of dung with a smiley face?  It’s not just on phones; it’s on jewelry and shoes at Bloomingdales and Bergdorf Goodman.  A ring featuring this image goes for $500, shoes for $340.  It’s beloved.

A culture that would love such a thing is incapable of true humanity and love.  Hollywood is incapable of writing or producing a Casablanca.  There are no adults anymore – just petulant children who know nothing but to scream that they know everything and to heap contempt on anyone who doesn’t subscribe to their liberal fascism.  Logic and facts are scorned and derided; myths (global warning, “Islamophobia”) and feelings are held up as fact and science.

I was watching a movie not long ago, a dated fifties musical short on Turner Classic Movies. It was bursting with life.  The kids in the room wanted me to put on something gory, negative, dark, and I said, no, no, watch this, this is great stuff – this is America.  And one of the teens replied, no it’s not, that’s from when America was happy.  And that struck me.  It hit me like a ton of bricks.  The left has worked so hard to make us miserable, and has succeeded.

If you had to boil the culture down to its essential oils, it would be last Sunday’s Oscars – oh, how that once mighty American art genre has fallen.

American traitor Edward Snowden got an Oscar; American hero Chris Kyle got the middle finger.  Even the traitorous far-left journalist Glenn Greenwald got an Oscars shout-out.  Of course Hollywood would reward vicious traitors.  There was no way the Hollywood establishment was going to give an Oscar to Clint Eastwood after he so delightfully skewered Obama’s empty chair. And their disdain for Americanism and the military is infused in everything they churn out.

During the Oscars ceremony, Hollywood congratulated itself on its bravery (none), diversity of ideas (none), and diversity of opinion (when there isn’t any allowed)?  Did you notice that whenever there was a mention of veterans, the camera cut to Bradley Cooper?  Apparently there weren’t any real veterans in the audience.  They had better things to do than witness this self-congratulatory love fest celebrating our cultural decline.

Hollywood, once a force for good, morality, love and romance, is now a force for evil, degradation, and cultural rape, cloaked in self-righteousness.  Patricia Arquette spoke out for equal rights for women.  Really?  Tell it to Neda Soltan, Noor Almaleki, Asia Hasan, Amina and Sarah Said, and the myriad other American Muslim women victimized by sharia. Patricia Arquette and her Hollywood friends wouldn’t dare speak up for them or the gender apartheid under Islamic law, but they weep for themselves and their pious, fallacious notions in their $10,000 ball gowns.

The Oscar show was typical Hollywood, epitomized by Neil Patirck Harris going on stage in his underwear.  What’s next?  Poo on the floor?  They’re devoid of talent, and they make up for it with vulgarity and potty jokes and congratulate themselves on how wonderful they are.

The one highlight of the telecast was a supreme Lady Gaga performing a sampling of songs from the great American musical classic, The Sound of Music.  It was superb.  There is something in that.  But no one in the ivory towers of America’s cultural power elite will take anything away from it.  Because the radical left has long abandoned the only real freedom any man (or woman) has – “free will,” the mind’s freedom to think or not.  And leftists seek to impose that evil upon us all.

Ayn Rand said, “There are two aspects of man’s existence which are the special province and expression of his sense of life: love and art.”  Both of which have all but been extinguished in the era of amoralism – reflected in cultural rot and the exaltation of the crank.

I tried to watch the Oscars, but when he walked out in his “underwear”, I turned it off and went to bed.

Excellent article. It’s been a long time since I’ve read Ayn Rand, maybe it’s time to do a re-read.

I’ve watched the new TV series “Gotham”. It’s “OK”, but nothing to write home about. I’ve had a bit of an issue dealing with the lesbian thing in it, not that I’m against people living their lives as they see fit, but the simple, abject gratuitousness of it, irks the hell out of me. I mean, what does a lesbian affair have to do with Batman?! Now, in the last episode, they’ve mildly implied a little lesbian/pedophilia thing between Inspector Gordon’s lesbian ex girlfriend and the pubescent “Cat Woman”. If they take that any further, I will cease to watch it.

Not having fancy TV hook-ups I watch what the antenna pulls in. There are some stations that run the old comedies – WKRP is great –so is Andy Griffith -then there are the old westerns. One feature with Marilyn Monroe was so good —BUS STOP -a love story on Valentine’s Day ! On radio from 10-2am one station runs old radio shows with a MC who loves to quiz the audience.
Besides the TV and Radio there are good books to escape to.
Thank GOD for Pam and Robert to keep us current –I do pray for our nation to come back to its COMMON SENSE and do the right thing.

Sorry Pamela, I had to Google it. I could not believe this. I live in such a bubble … Not really, you are more than 100% right. What a better representation of US popular culture than a representation of a pile of poop? Isn’t it wonderful we reached the 21st century, and this level of civilization?

I had to Google it, too. That shows how insulated I am from the state or our culture, even though I know it was bad. I saw a video where one of Pamela’s daughters played the Musette of Johann Sebastian Bach. I hope her daughter appreciates more classical music to counteract the hip hop garbage that is so prevalent today.

I seem to remember a scene in Atlas Shrugged where Dagny tried to find something to inspire her and there was nothing but the records she had of a romantic composer who had disappeared.
It is no wonder so many turn to drugs for escape.

Thank you for this excellent article. I agree 100%. The other night someone invited me to watch the film Magnolia on television. The f-word is used some 190 times in that film. I finally had to walk away. I felt like I had injected something toxic. I was even afraid to turn the television back on the night after, afraid of what I might find. How did we come to this? “Hollywood, once a force for good, morality, love and romance, is now a force for evil, degradation, and cultural rape, cloaked in self-righteousness.” So true!

Overall, your essay knocks it out of the park. I only take issue with the following:

“The left has worked so hard to make us miserable, and has succeeded.”

I agree with the first part, but not the last. I embrace the Happy Warrior concept best portrayed by Andrew Breitbart. The left succeeds only if they are let to, and I do not cede my personal joy to their nihilism one bit. I do not support with my dollars, time, attention or approval any of their metastasizing dead-end philosophies.

Jim Fox, your “mountain” of scientific evidence was created by the first “science” to have been completely co-opted by the philosophical premises of postmodernism. You have been as blinded by their trappings of science as the children Ms. Geller refers to have been blinded by their elders’ trappings of professorial rank. This takes a while to demonstrate, but please consider the following.

Today’s star climate “scientists” have been made so by the leftist press as surely as Paul Krugman was made a star economist, by the same people and for the same reasons: because it brings us closer to the totalitarian dictatorship they know we deserve. There can be a scientific study of climate, indeed, there once was, when honest scientists attempted to understand the reasons for long-term trends in the atmosphere and long-term changes in those trends. But because these were real scientists, they were modest about what they know and about what it was possible for them to know. Why? Because the earth’s climate is a unique thing. And while science may be applied to the study of unique things, it will always be tentative and speculative about the grand picture. There can be histories of unique things — e.g. natural history — but no true science of unique things as wholes, since science is about discovering universal principles.

A true science must be able to make observations of many examples of the same kind of thing and by observing how different situations involving instances of that kind of thing behave differently and result in different outcomes, discern the probable causative inputs that result in each kind of outcome. The best science performs experiments explicitly to control the inputs to the subject under study and find out which inputs are causative of outputs and in which direction and by how much. The more situations that can be tested and the faster they can be tested, the faster is the growth of scientific knowledge of the universal principles involved. Where experiments are mostly impossible, as in astronomy, scientists make up for their inability to control the inputs by discovering many thousands of naturally varying examples of inputs to a subject and observing the results that consistently follow a certain class of inputs to discover the causes operating. Thus, they learn to estimate the masses of stars by their relative motion, and study the relationships between mass, spectra, and luminosity to narrow down onto the probable physics within stars using the experimental knowledge gained in earthly physics.

But what do climate “scientists” do. Do they run thousands of experiments controlling climate inputs and comparing them to climate outputs? Of course not. Even if such experiments could be run each experiment would take thirty years (to discern climate from weather) and to run even a hundred of them: 3000 years. So they can’t do experiments, but maybe they can do what astronomers do, and observe thousands of examples of naturally occurring differences in inputs and outputs? No, sorry, there are not a thousand other earth-like atmospheres to observe, there is not even one other.

Climate scientists are in the position of biologists who discover a new organism, let’s call it a Novium, and wants to know all about it’s life cycle, its interactions with various environments, its preferred diet, it’s diseases, the differences between its sexes, if any, its reproductive life, and on and on. Only trouble is there is only one Novium. It’s unique. Can there be a science of the Novium? No. the best they can do is what honest climatologists do. They can apply whatever scientific knowledge they have of other physical systems and attempt to build up a picture of what might be happening, while acknowledging that there is no way for them to study the subject as a whole and so no way to be certain about its behavior as a whole. But there is little scientific glory, little grant money, and no political influence in such scientific honesty.

So climate “scientists” create computer simulations, or “models” of Earth’s climate and run thousands of “experiments” on those, continually tweaking their inputs and assumptions about the behavior of the atmosphere untill they can get a simulation to produce the results they want, whereupon they publish it in one of their clique-reviewed journals and declare to the world that they have “scientific proof” that any substantial increase in CO^2 will result in catastrophic global warming. Their simulations have about as much resemblance to Earth’s actual climate as a game of checkers does to the Battle of Normandy.

If you disagree with their ”science” you will be labeled a “denier” — worse even than a Holocaust denier because you will kill more innocents — and they will scream that the “consensus” (of their corrupt clique and promoters, that is) demands that you accept their verdict. How can you even think of denying the consensus? Why are they so upset? It’s as I said at the top. they are postmodern scientists and postmodernism is founded on social metaphysics and social epistemology: What society thinks is real IS real, and what society says is true IS true — reality is “socially constructed”. But, if enough of you benighted individualist thinkers out there deny the social will of our group and it’s academic and media and governmental friends, the social will may change, and with it the nature of reality, and with it all the truths I hold dear and on which I base my sense of self, so I and my universe will cease to be. Therefore, it’s time for a dictatorship of experts like us as the only way to prevent this cosmic disaster.

So you see, Jim, it turns out that like much in postmodern culture, your mountain of evidence is just another pile of dung.

Well done, and I agree with most of what you say. I am also dismayed at the disreputable, dysfunctional and low brow state in which our nation seems to be. It is such a sad statement on our society that there is actually designer poo, with designer prices, a smiling icon that is actually “beloved,” low brow values, manners and rampant ignorance are prized as “virtues.” Anyone who actually has in intellect or remembers how to behave is scorned and ridiculed. However, I do disagree that the cause of this and the blame lie solely with the “Left,” which is only one head of the two headed snake, that has its own agenda, to take it a step further. The sooner we realize this and call it out for what it is, the better. “Call out the darkness but invoke the Light.”

Pamela, you might want to reconsider selling ad space on your website (as other conservatives recently have). Of the six sponsored links to “articles [I] might enjoy”, five are teased with images of women entertainers as sex toys, and are the sort of crap that E! readers might search out. This sort of garbage, appearing as it does directly below your superb essay on EXACTLY that very subject, sure destroys the seriousness of your message.

Thank you for your reply. I understand the economics. What I do not understand is the driver for the ads I am seeing. Trust me, I am the last person in the world who’d be looking at “celebrity news” websites; my internet use is limited to political blogs like Doug Giles, Patriot Post, NRO, Heritage Sentinel … and eBay. And the conservative web publisher who dumped his relationship with Google ads is (if I recall correctly) Gary North.
