Members of the Russian femme activist group, Pussy Riot, are on a U.S. tour – a veritable tour de force. Having landed in the country last week, the Pussy Rioters are being feted by cultural, political and media elites. They are the cause celebre. The flavor du jour. Why all love and gush? The elites are prostrating themselves before these women because Pussy Riot staged a political protest in a church, a cathedral.

According to the Independent, “Pussy Riot protested inside Moscow’s biggest cathedral, singing songs calling on the Virgin Mary to remove President Vladimir Putin from office.”

Obama’s U.S. ambassador to the United Nations, Samantha Power, met with them to discuss world affairs. When asked about Power’s roughly half-hour meeting with the Pussy Riot members, Russian U.N. Ambassador Vitaly Churkin responded: “She has not joined the band?”

“I would expect her to invite them to perform at the National Cathedral in Washington,” he said. “Maybe they could arrange a world tour for them, you know.”

Reset button! What a diplomatic disaster.

The elites in politics, media, movies and music couldn’t get enough. The “freedom fighter” Madonna said that she wanted to record with them after they appeared with her at New York’s Amnesty International concert last Wednesday.

They also appeared at the Cinema for Peace press conference, along with luminaries such as Kweku Mandela, who is Nelson Mandela’s grandson, and Bianca Jagger, who is now a “European Council Goodwill Ambassador,” to promote their prison rights foundation, Zone of Law.

The Guardian effused about their passion. The New York Times has written glowingly about them. And Forbes wrote:

Buzzfeed recently published a lengthy profile of Pussy Riot which describes in detail the band’s transformation from obscure radical art collective to international cause celebre. The (understandably) sympathetic portrait portrays the band’s members not merely as artists, but as sophisticated observers of the Russian political scene possessed of a plan to transform the benighted country into a more open, accepting, and transparent one.

Even the new mayor of New York, Red Bill de Blasio, got in on the action. He did a photo op with the girls and then had a closed-door meeting with them. No press. He shut them out. And Metro had this:

Mayor Bill de Blasio helped organize the visit to Rikers, where they met with male inmates, who were surprised both by the group’s risqué name and by their crime and penalty – “two years for singing a song,” Ms. Tolokonnikova said. (The actual charge was hooliganism motivated by religious hatred, for performing a snippet of a song protesting President Vladimir V. Putin in a Moscow cathedral in 2012. They were sentenced to two years but were released a few months early, in December 2013.)

Are you tearing up yet? They have also received offers from George Lucas for a movie “like Star Wars.” They said, in fact, that had received several movie offers, but declined to elaborate. Meanwhile, the Hollywood Reporter is all a Twitter with excitement over them. Steven Colbert had them on. HBO has a film out on them.

Ooo la la. Oh, the hardships for these human rights troubadours. Concerts! Films! Magazines! Tell Bono I’ll have to get back to him later!

Oh, and by the way, their music is terrible. Seriously bad. But Rolling Stone won’t let that get in the way. It made the Boston Marathon jihad bomber their cover boy.

What is interesting is that Pussy Riot is not beloved in Russia. According to Forbes, “Pussy Riot’s complete lack of traction in Russian society (fully two-thirds of Russians think the band’s two-year prison sentence was either appropriate or too light) isn’t the slightest bit mysterious. It’s actually incredibly simple. Why? Well the Pussy Rioters have made no secret of their contempt for the Orthodox Church. Not without reason, they consider the church irredeemably corrupted by its association with the Kremlin. This is why they decided to perform in a cathedral: There was no better place for them to criticize the increasingly close connection between organized politics and organized religion.”

Nevertheless, USA Today is reporting that they mean to run for Moscow Assembly in Russia. They won’t win. They aren’t liked.

I have a real challenge for these brave femmes: Stage a protest in a mosque. Protest clitoridectomies, honor killings, child marriage, forced marriage, women as and chattel. Then let’s see how many of their new friends they have at the end of the day. If Pussy Riot protested inside, say, the Blue Mosque, singing songs calling on Muhammad’s six-year-old wife Aisha to remove President Vladimir Putin from office, would the world be petting and fêting the felines?

They would have been destroyed, smeared, banned. But they protested in a cathedral, so they are worshiped. That was enough to make them become overnight the darlings of the West.
