Saturday Night Cinema: The Strange Woman

15

In celebration of Hedy Lamarr's birthday yesterday, tonight's Saturday Night Cinema is The Strange Woman. Lamarr, stunningly beautiful as always, plays a deeply conflicted woman well, as the film veers wildly from morality tale to lurid melodrama.

I am a big fan of Lamarr, not just for her breathtaking beauty or film career, but for her work off the screen. She was a genius — really. Mathematically talented, Lamarr co-invented—with composer George Antheil—an early technique for spread spectrum communications and frequency hopping, necessary for wireless communication from the pre-computer age to the present day. Wi-fi. The "most beautiful woman in Europe" was Jewish — something I had not known.

B-movie auteur Edgar G. Ulmer managed to direct a few A-pictures during
his long career; he was personally selected by Hedy Lamarr to helm this
big-budget thriller, a project she put together to change her image as a
starlet whose sex appeal outweighed her acting abilities. Set in the
early 19th century, The Strange Woman takes place in Bangor, Maine,
where logging and lumber mills have made the town prosperous. Jenny
Hager (Lamarr) has grown up in Bangor, not far from the watchful eye of
wealthy Isaiah Poster
(Gene Lockhart). The fact that Jenny is twenty years Isaiah's junior
does not stem his amorous intentions, and when she's finally out of her
teens, Jenny accepts his proposal of marriage. But beneath her sweet
exterior, Jenny is a shrewd, conniving women, and while she makes a fine
life for herself with Isaiah's money, she obviously doesn't care for
him. When Isaiah's son Ephraim (Louis Hayward) visits from college,
Jenny is immediately attracted to him, and she tells him that she'll
marry him if he murders his father. But, unknown to Ephraim, Jenny is
already scheming to win the affections of businessman John Evered
(George Sanders), even though he's pledged to marry her best friend Meg
(Hillary Brooke). Based on a novel by Ben Ames Williams, The Strange
Woman was generally considered one of Hedy Lamarr's best performances,
although her best-known performance would continue to be in Ecstasy
(1933), largely because of her then-daring nude scenes. ~ Mark Deming,

I knew Hedy (nee: Hedwig Eva Maria Kiesler) was Jewish, as was the woman who, in my opinion ranked w/ Grace Kelly as most gorgeous in her day: Lauren Bacall (nee: Betty Joan Perske). But I did not know of Hedy’s intellectual contribution to society. Always love learning something new. T/Y.

Beaverton police take hamster into ‘protective custody’ after owner is accused of DUI
Rebecca Woolington, The Oregonian By Rebecca Woolington, The Oregonian
on October 17, 2012 at 5:05 PM, updated October 17, 2012 at 5:08 PM
…………………………………………………………….
Three Beaverton police officers corralled a hamster and took the animal into “protective custody” after the animal’s owner — and driver — was accused of impaired driving.
…………………………………………………………….
Officers reportedly talked with the driver, whom they identified as Nicole Huey, 27, of Beaverton, and found that she had a hamster on her lap.
…………………………………………………………….
“It took three officers to capture the furry little passenger,” Rowe wrote on the department’s Facebook page. “It appeared that the hamster wanted to stay in the vehicle, and it put up a good fight trying to avoid capture.”

Yes, Hedy was Jewish, brilliant and beautiful. She shocked the world in the 1930’s by appearing nude in the Czech film, “Ecstasy.” She married a half-Jewish Austrian arms merchant, Fritz Mandl, who often did business with Nazis. She would sit and listen while her husband and Nazi officials discussed military matters at dinner or meetings and took that information with her when she fled her husband and Nazism. Louis Mayer discovered her shortly after she arrived in London. He renamed her Lamarr.
Frequency hopping, was all hers. She didn’t take it from anyone else, as some have suggested she picked it up from the Nazis with whom her husband used to deal. She took the idea to composer George Antheil and together they decided to use a piano roll to move radar control signals for torpedoes among 88 frequencies. This would make detection of the torpedoes difficult. The technique was rejected by the Navy during WWII but was used in 1962 during the blockage of Cuba. By then, Hedy and Antheil’s original patent had expired.
She was an inventor, and probably better at that than at acting. She easily could have been a great scientist or engineer, she was that smart.

Stupid people shouldn’t be allowed to vote.
America has chosen the enemy once again. AKA; submission.
The enemy of America; Israel; common sense; liberty; free enterprise; coal; oil; a safe southern boarder; common decency; the federal republic our Founding Fathers gave to us; the elderly.
Does anyone actually believe grandma, and grandpa are going to get heart transplants, or some other life saving operation when they are eighty years old?
Not with ObamaCare in place.
America has elected a severe Communist. A dictator wannabe, who can’t stop slurping the asses of every other America hater around the world. Especially Islamic asses.
Lastly. I’m watching the Bronco Bama fans waiving American Flags. Why? What for? They obviously don’t love America. Shouldn’t they be waiving a Taliban flag? Or a Venezuelan flag? Or a Chinese flag?

RT News article on proposed new build of 10,000 people capacity MEGA MOSQUE, EAST LONDON
RT News says: No thanks” that is the reaction from residents of East London to Europes largest Mosque being planned in their backyard, right next to the Olympic site. It is not only the sheer size, but the Islamic group developing it that they are worried about.
4 times bigger than St Pauls Cathedral, a Mega Mosque that will fit 10,000 people, and it could be coming to London’s East End, if it gets the go-ahead.
If built it will be the same size as London’s looming Battersea Power Station. It will also be the biggest place of ?? in the UK, of any religion. But critics have slammed the proposals, saying it will create a Muslim Ghetto in the British capital.
Working to bring the largest Mosque the UK has ever seen, into reality. Revered Architects and Planning Consultants, and glitzy PR teams – all paid for by the organisation behind the idea, Tablighi Jamaat (wiki: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tablighi_Jamaat), a group that is causing significant concern.
Alan Craig (Campaign Director, Mega-Mosque No Thanks) says: It is only Tablighi Jamaat, out of all the other Islamic groups that have created ghettos over in Toronto, you know, in Canada, right around the world, it is a huge group, and wherever they go, they create barriers, they create hostility, division, they create separatism.
RT News says: With its unassuming name, Tablighi Jamaat’s website claims there is a demand for a Muslim place of worship in culturally diverse East London, not that they are happy to talk about it, its representatives refused to speak to us when we approached the proposed site, home to their current Mosque.
Dr Jenny Taylor (Resident) says: It does not want to integrate. The grounds on which they are trying to set-up here in Britain, in a big way, are anti-British. They are anti-Western. But, actually, they are also anti-Worldly, they’re other ‘worldly’. This is not just going to be a Mosque, this is going to be a centre of training, in which to reach out to islamise Muslims, to harden-up and medievalise, the Islam of ordinary Muslims in this country. I meet so many Muslim who don’t want that.
Asghar Bukhari (spokesman MPAC) says: The problem here is that Muslims themselves are opposing this Mosque. Not on the grounds they don’t want to worship their god, but on the grounds that the women aren’t allowed and the Muslim population has no say on how the Mosque is governed.
RT News says: The Local Authority, would only say to us:
“We can confirm we have received a Planning Application. As this is currently being processed it would be inappropriate to comment further at this stage.”
Alan Craig (Campaign Director, Mega-Mosque No Thanks) says: If this were to go ahead, it would be like a tipping point and there would be no stopping fundamentalist Islam if this one goes up. Well, if that happens we all need to leave the country, the last one out, please turn the lights off.
RT News says: While the Council ponders, campaigners here, say they hope the decision makers just who they let set-up shop in the British capital.

ma02169, My MIL was on a Kindertransport in 1938, escaping NAZI Germany that way. She’s about to turn 88 next week. She has been battling Leukemia the past couple of years and even earlier this year was able to drive, until she fell and broke her hip. She didn’t break the pelvic bone but more seriously, the femoral crown. She had a replacement and did very well except it led to a bowel prolapse. They would have left her in that condition, even tho she was somewhat ambulatory and fully alert but she DEMANDED they do the repair and came thru that with flying colors!!!!!! She gets 2 pts. of Type B- blood every week. We think the only reason she’s still alive is because they could afford the co-pays for these procedures on top of Medicare and whatever supplement they carry. The thing is Mom is now quite weak and her mind is getting fuzzy. I don’t know if it’s actually dementia or just lack of red blood cells reaching her brain but although she sleeps a lot, she can still get up and cook a meal and get out to the store a bit. We are just waiting for them to find an excuse to not transfuse her, especially since she has the second rarest blood type. All it will take is some sort of “shortage” or another small “crisis” like she had recently with something to do with her gall bladder. She’s amazing, really and B”H Dad is strong and alert to be there for her but without the support system and the MONEY to pay for additional care, you are probably quite right, that the older folks will not get the things they need to live longer. Unfortunately, my In-Laws voted for Obama in 2008 and I am almost 100% certain that given Romney as the alternative, they probably did again even tho they were disgusted with Obama.

Interesting information on the frequency hopping invention.
As an Licensed Amateur Radio Operator of 23 years and of general class. I find that most intriguing.
