Michigan Public School All-Girl Muslim Prom

37

This shocking New York Times article describes a girls only, public school prom especially created to accommodate the religious practices of observant, female Muslim students. Further proof of the islamization of America, as outlined in my book. Get the practical guide to the resistance.

Emailer Jared Silverstein queries, "Is this diversity and imposition of religion as argued in many cases by the ACLU and progressives in First Amendment cases, or the selective allowance of the imposition of religion on others? With the push for secularism and diversity, would any other ethnic group have received this glowing review from the NYT of a prom based on ethnic and religious restraints?  Observant Orthodox Jewish women are under similar constraints as those described in the article on observant Muslim women students.  How would the NYT react if there was a prom which catered to them?"

Another giant leap backwards. Imposing Islam on the public square. Read. the. book. here.

Story continues below advertisement

Imagine the lather the NY Times would have worked itself into if this had been Christian girls, or worse, Jewish girls imposing their faith on the public school.

New York Times:

HAMTRAMCK, Mich. —[….] As organizer of Hamtramck High School’s first all-girl prom, which conforms to religious beliefs forbidding dating, dancing with boys or appearing without a head scarf in front of males, Tharima, 17, was forging a new rite of passage for every teenage Muslim girl who had ever spent prom night at home, wistfully watching the limousines roll by.

“Hi, guys — I mean girls!” Tharima, a Bangladeshi-American, exuded into the microphone as 100 girls — Yemeni-American, Polish-American, Palestinian-American, Bosnian-American and African-American — began pouring into the hall on Bangladesh Avenue.

This was prom, Hamtramck-style: the dense scrappy working-class city of 22,500 encircled by Detroit, once predominantly German and Polish, has become one of the most diverse small cities in America. Its new soul lay in the music playlist embedded in Rukeih Malik’s iPhone: Lady Gaga, Cobra Starship, the Belgrade-born singer Ana Kokic and The Bilz, a Canadian-South Asian band, singing “2 Step Bhangra.”

In this season of wobbly heels and cleavage, the bittersweet transformation of teenagers in jeans and T-shirts into elegant adults barely recognizable to their friends is an anticipated tradition.

But at the all-girl prom, there were double double-takes, as some of Tharima’s classmates, normally concealed in a chrysalis of hijab and abaya, the traditional Muslim cloak, literally let their hair down in public for the first time.

Eman Ashabi, a Yemeni-American who helped organize the event, arrived in a ruffled pink gown, her black hair falling in perfect waves, thanks to a curling iron. Like many here, she stunned her friends.

“It’s ‘Oh my god!’ ” said Simone Alhagri, a Yemeni-American junior who was wearing a tight shirred dress. “This is how you look underneath!”

The dance was the denouement of seven months of feverish planning in which a committee raised $2,500, mostly through bake sales. Ignoring the naysayers who could not imagine anyone coming to a prom without boys, Tharima and her friends approached their task systematically, taking a survey of all the girls at Hamtramck High. They found that 65 percent were not able to attend the coed prom because of cultural and religious beliefs. After discussion, the school supported the student-driven alternative.

In addition to Muslim girls (and alumnae who never got the opportunity), non-Muslim students wanted to go, too. “I want to support all my girls,” said Sylwia Stanko, who was born in Poland and whose friends are mostly Bengali-American or Arab-American. “I know how important it is to them.”

The prom promised “music all night, except during dinner and five minutes for prayer.” A former Knights of Columbus hall was transformed into princess-pink perfection.

Tharima placed a huge order for decorations with PromNite.com, including a light-up fountain to which the girls added pink food coloring.

Tharima had dreamed of prom night since her freshman year, squirreling away photographs of ballrooms and ads for tiaras.

Haram!

As Tharima prepared for her big night, her mother, Roushanara Ahmed, recalled the fancy pink sari she wore to an all-girls party in what is now Bangladesh. “I was in high school,” she said, her voice low, eyes softening. “I know her feelings.”

Like the prom, the city of Hamtramck is a mixer of a different kind. Along Joseph Campau Street, a monumental statue of Pope John Paul II presides over Pope Park, with its festive mural of Krakow. A poster for the television program “Bosnian Idol” is displayed in the Albanian Euro Mini Mart, known for homemade yogurt and burek, traditional spinach and meat pies. During her English class, Tharima can hear the call to prayer over loudspeakers from the Islah Islamic Center a few blocks from school.

Diversity was hard-won: The mosque, one of five in the city, was the subject of controversy in 2004, when some people strenuously objected to the city’s decision to allow it to broadcast prayers five times a day; the city ultimately prevailed, regulating the hours when the call may be sounded.

Imagine the city folk tortured with the caterwauling five times a day.

At Hamtramck High, which has 900 students, many non-Muslims respectfully tuck away their food and water bottles during Ramadan. The prom reflects a broad cultural shift. “Twenty years ago, parents used to pull fifth-grade girls out of school for arranged marriages,” said Chris Bindas, a library aide who brought chocolate-dipped cream puffs to the prom. “Now these same girls are going to college” — albeit a college close to home, where the girls will continue to live with their parents.

Tharima, who plans to work while attending Wayne State University in Detroit, has applied for 27 scholarships, saving all the rejection letters.

“These are my weaknesses,” she said of her financial struggles. “But they are also my strengths.”

On Saturday night, when the strobe lights started, throwing jewels of light around the room, the shy comments of “Oh, you look gorgeous!” and “Ooh, I love your shoes!” gave way to the sheer joy of music, the girls fist-pumping in unison, some discarding their heels and some hugging one another in disbelief.

Shortly before 8, it was time for prayer, the spaghetti straps and empire waists disappearing under hijabs and abayas, a prayer rug taking its place on the dance floor.

Afterward, when the prom royalty was announced, it was no surprise — except to her — that Tharima was pronounced the senior queen, a tiara ceremoniously placed atop her hijab. Amid whoops and shrieks, she struggled to maintain her composure. Her mascara was not so lucky.

Correction: Michigan school, still where is the separation of church and state? Why wasn’t the prom held at the mosque?

Rumina

How is it a giant leap backwards? Just because these girls didn’t want to take part in drinking and one-night stands, doesn’t mean they’re old-fashioned. They’re courageous! We live in the U.S. and there’s a law called…FREEDOM OF RELIGION! So if these girls still want to go to prom but have their own style, what’s wrong with that?

Lea
Lea

Rumina, the girls can have their own prom. But the NYtimes writing it as some kind of exciting move forward? That’s ridiculous. If your culture/religion teaches you that it is some kind of moral failure to have 18 year olds of the opposite sex socializing in the same ballroom : that’s not freedom…. that’s oppression and crazy. Btw, plenty of parents don’t let their kids engage in after parties. Other parents do, and host the parties, without drinking. And plenty of self-respecting American 18 year olds think one night stands are disgusting. Have some respect!

Rummy, I’ll try not to use big words: Here in the US we have something called the Constitution, all of our laws are based on this document. Are you still with me? Good. Freedom of religion is a basic concept of that Constitution but it is expressed as freedom from the government establishing religion. It’s a non-establishment concept. This story is about a public school. As such, the school is operated using money from taxes collected by our government. The all girl prom is a special accommodation designed for the convenience of Muslim girls alone. That special accommodation for Muslims defines the sort of establishment of religion by government which the Constitution prohibits. Quite simply – it is illegal.
If this all girl prom were not held, the Muslim girls would in no way have their freedom to worship their faith hindered. They could simply choose not to attend the prom.
Your claim that laws calling for freedom of religion justify this all-girl prom is virtually identical to the OWS morons claiming that freedom of speech protects their presumed right to defecate on the sidewalk and destroy public property.

Very true, Richard. Great point. I was assuming that this prom was financed by the girls themselves and not by the school. The “committee” through bake sales, but it is still unclear. If the school paid for this prom … WHOA! Yikes. Thanks!

This is just blatant non-stealth sharia. Like an all-girls prom with hijabs is…American?!
BTW, the NYT cheerleading for this inflitration is disgusting. I can only imagine how they’d react if a bunch of KKK parents set up an all-white prom, sponsored by their own bake sales. Doubt they’d focus on the cheerful singing, dancing and laughter.
Remember the new Obamunist enemedia mottos:
SHARIAH IS PATRIOTIC.
PATRIOTISM IS EVIL.
FREEDOM IS SUBMISSION.
Oh, and how cd I forget: ZIONISM IS SATANISM.

Lea, you raise a fair point that the girls raised funds. Add to that the prom was not held at the school. But I think the way the story was written was to create the impression that the prom was financed solely by the girls. They raised $2500.
They rented out a hall for the night.
They served dinner for 100.
They placed a

    huge

order for decorations with PromNite.com, including a light-up fountain.
They played music all night, maybe a band, more likely a DJ plus his sound equipment.
It sounds to me like an event that cost well over $2500 to hold. Also consider that (regardless whether or not the $2500 fully funded the event) if this was promoted in a school paper with unpaid advertising, if any faculty supported this event while on the clock, or if ticket sales were performed by school administration – then the non-establishment clause was violated. And those are not the only circumstances surrounding this prom for which non-establishment may have been violated.
What kind of prom did the school hold for the boys? I know the guys I went to high school with would not go to a male only dance where they held hands and danced in circles. We would have thrown a kegger and done it without a dime of the school’s money.

An all girls prom seems kind of senseless however if the school give its support as a legit school function then they have opened a nice hole to run things threw. How about a school supported senior breakfast and Christian payer service for all Christian seniors and any other senior who would like to attend. In fact after the Islamic all girls prom I would suggest not asking the for school sponsorship but demanding it.
Its time heed the words of Saul Alinsky , ” Make them play by their own rules.” This school (which I’m sure got the okay from their district school office) sanctioned a religious, Islamic/Arabic inspired event. Force them now to accommodate any and all other religions/ cultures.

still, i think we have bigger problems. This story is still sweet in it’s way imo. “Oh my god, this is how you look like underneath?” assuming it’s that true and honest. but then again, we must stand up for American respectable traditions wherever they are. THIS IS OUR BEAUTIFUL COUNTRY! The country of our Great Grandparents. The people in America who represent Arab lifestyles and counties must learn to appreciate the radical individualism that this country embodies. Or not to live here. P>S> women constitute individuals as well. 18 year olds are not your property. or mine. TO EACH THEIR OWN. Prom= means the whole highschool. or if you go to a girls school, you can have dates. You. Are. 18. wth? xo 🙂

Jamadagnii

So I stand corrected, this prom was held in a Knights’ of Columbus Hall, and not at the school. I don’t have a problem with Muslim girls organizing their own prom.
“Prom= means the whole highschool.” Actually it doesn’t always mean that. There have been many cases reported where gay kids are told they can not attend their proms with their dates and also have to organize separate proms.

I knew this was coming to the USA. Can you imagine hearing this crap, FIVE TIMES A DAY, EVERY DAY OF THE WEEK blaring out over your neighborhood? Yet in Turkistan, Jews cannot sound the shofar and church bells may not be rung.
Anyone who doesn’t realize it’s either islamofascism or freedom by now, won’t until it’s too late to do anything about it.

Detroit is in Michigan, not NJ. I can’t imagine this happening in NJ. There was a black prom in the local NJ paper and people were upset about that, saying it was racist. I think it was like a debuttante ball type of thing with a bunch of black high school girls all dressed up. I said I didn’t care what they did, people are entitled to have their own parties and groups. I think they started doing that over feeling left out, but the Mulims seem to do it to show the world a better way. I would not want to go that way.
If they enjoy that kind of a life that is on them, but I think it is the shape of things to come when they are getting everyone to support them. I wouldn’t expect the whites to want to support a black prom, so why should they support a Muslim prom either?
They aren’t going to be allowed in society all elegant and dressed up, they are going to be hidden under hijabs and burkas and kaftans and whatever they wear to hide themselves from the world. What is the point then? Just to prove that they look good to other women? Isn’t that kind of gay?
Then blaring their horns to prayer. I mean this is a Christian nation so I understand church bells, and if I go near the Buddhists they might bang a gong, but why should everyone have to hear this wailing when this country is not a part of that tradition? I can’t imagine having to hear that. I think people would go nuts, like maybe honk horns or thow fits.
When they start yelling allah akbar, people can yell allah snackbar. It makes as much sense.

This prom was organized at a rented hall outside of the school and the girls raised the money for this. That being said I would assume the high school maintained their normail prom as usual.
Everyone needs to calm the hell down and realize America is built on diversity.
When the Irish came here there were people who called them foreign invaders, same with the Italians, Jews and every other ethnic group.
America is the melting pot or mixed salad as they ladies and gents, get used to it. This prom is as American as apple pie.

Richie. I will also attempt to use words so you can easily comprehend, okay? First of all, these girls did NOT use the money of the school, they raised the money on their own. Hence, your taxpayers’ money argument is void. Secondly, this was not an exclusively all Muslims event. Even Non-Muslims girls were invited and welcomed at this event. Just because these Muslim girls do not want to take part in prom with boys, why does it matter? My goodness. Is it personally harming you? Did your feelings get hurt? The accommodation for a religion is expressing your respect for that religion. Scenario for you: If a Jehovah Witness student did not celebrate birthdays, would you make her or him stay in the classroom while the students celebrated a birthday? Because in my elementary school, my teachers accommodated that student by giving them the chance to study in library or another classroom during the birthday festivities. Accommodation= respect for that individual even if you don’t share the same ideals as that individual.
Have a heart will ya.

Lea, your comment made me chuckle. Thank you for that! But anyways, let’s analyze your comment and see how valid it is.
Firstly, are you sure you live in the United States? The same United States in which you’ve claimed, “Plenty of parents don’t let their kids engage in after parties”?
Because according to statistics, 58& of alcohol-related car accident fatalities occur during Prom season, April to Mid-June. This evidence clearly contradicts your claim. Because for these accidents to have occurred, alcohol must have been involved; either in these after parties you wish to ignore or in Prom itself. And if you still choose to go along with your idea that kids don’t go to after parties, then the fact that Prom is having these harmful drinks proves my point that these Muslims girls choosing to have their own prom is better and in my opinion: smarter and safer.
But hey, that’s supported in my evidence: http://matthewnoyes.typepad.com/attorney_matthew_noyes_bl/2008/04/car-accident-in.html
Your second interesting comment was, “Plenty of self-respecting 18-yr old Americans think one-night stands are disgusting”. If only that was the case Lea. If only. Because if that was the case then the United States wouldn’t be the only place with the HIGHEST TEENAGE PREGNANCY RATE! Isn’t that shocking? 750,000 teen pregnancies occur annually in the U.S. Yes, of course one-night stands are not the only reason for this horrible statistic, but they are indeed contributing. Also, I’d like to quote: “The one-night stand is a great American tradition in which two people have awkward sex that both will regret immediately”. Hate to break it to you, but 18-yr old Teenagers do not think one-night stands are disgusting, otherwise why are they doing it Lea? Why? Additionally, this quote was not stated by me but indeed your fellow Americans who also know for sure that one-night stands in American are prominent.
It’s terrible that these Muslim girls did not engage in alcohol drinking or one-night stands right? I mean if they did, they would be more likely to drop out of school and remain single parents, or even die from alcohol-related car accidents. Such a shame…

Ummmmm…. Rumina. lol. Yes, I live here. I am from here. So are both my parents. And their parents. And… xo
There are many Americans who have a high moral standard. We are a people who believes in decency. Your quotes and sources are hardly authoritative for the whole or even majority. And what about the 58% and prom season? lol
I was personally raised quite strictly, and was taught values of purity and chastity. As I have became an adult, those ideals continue to shape my choices. I am 25 now btw. But with freedom, comes a spectrum of choices. Some people choose to live dangerously. Others choose to live modestly.
If these 18 year old girls are truly choosing chastity and sobriety for themselves, then attending regular prom with the whole student body and even attending the after parties, will not change those choices. And if they’re not choosing this lifestyle out of their own free will – then it’s only just a matter of time…. someday they will be 19 and out of your house! ha.

I live here. I am from the U.S. My parents have lived there, and even there parents live there. And guess what? I’m Muslim.
I’m an American Muslim and I’ve been negatively treated by my fellow Americans based on the unfortunate acts of other Muslims. There are 6.8 billions Muslims in the U.S. and yet I’m still stereotyped as a Terrorist or oppressed. Just like you, I was taught values of purity and chastity. So why am I still stereotyped against still? You stated, “Your quotes and sources are hardly authoritative for the whole or even majority”. So can you do the same to my religion. Can you treat me for the person I am and not on the negative portrayal of Muslims around us? Additionally, based on what you wrote, it seems like you’re against generalizing too, except you contradict yourself when you say, “Well, unless you marry off to her first cousin at 16 :/ Man, you guys are smart. You have that control thing covered.” Your quote is ALSO NOT REPRESENTATIVE FOR THE WHOLE OR EVEN MAJORITY OF MUSLIMS!
That is just plain ignorance and racism. Please stop.

I am insulted by the assumption that gender mixing and a woman’s exposed hair and comfortable or attractive clothing automatically mean sexual availability. It is a deeply offensive assumption. I will freely wear what is comfortable (eg shorts and t-shirts in summer) and will thank you to not assume that it means I’m sexually available to anyone except the man I CHOOSE.
Rumina, perhaps you could explain: women who wear hijab quite obviously think there is something wrong with showing one’s hair – often explained as a lack of ‘chastity’. Knowing that this is how hijab-wearing women think, how on earth can one not be offended by their hijab?

Rumina. “6.8 Billions of Muslims in the United States”? Depending on whose numbers you use that would be the population of the world. Of which some 1.2 Billion are Muslim. Again, depending on whose numbers are used. And, of those, 1-2% of the US population is Muslim. 300,000 to 600,000 most likely. Which is way too many, by the way.

As a taxpayer, I object. A kid can’t pray to Jesus in a public school, if you wear a t-shirt with an American flag, you are told to take it off or sent home, but the Mexican kids can wear a t-shirt with the Mexican flag on it, now they want to have a muslim girl prom? I thought Muslim women weren’t allowed to dance or listen to music and were lower than dogs in Muslim society. I would also object if they had an all christian prom, even though I’m a Christian. Either it’s open to everyone or it’s not. It is a public school and everyone complains about seperation of church and state, unless of course it is for muslims. Or gays. By the way, Muslims kill gays. Thought I would bring that to your attention.

My sincerest apologies everyone, you all are absolutely correct, it’s 6.8 million Muslims in the U.S. And that is the reason, I’m not a mathematics major! 🙂
Susan: You stated, “women who wear hijab quite obviously think there is something wrong with showing one’s hair – often explained as a lack of ‘chastity’. Knowing that this is how hijab-wearing women think, how on earth can one not be offended by their hijab?”. Now I have a question for you: How about Nuns? They also cover their hair so why are they able to dress that way but not Muslim women? I’m curious to know your answer.
Randy: Your thought, “I thought Muslim women weren’t allowed to dance or listen to music and were lower than dogs in Muslim society” is very false indeed. In the Quran you’ll find passages depicting the equality and value of women:
Their Lord responded to them: “I never fail to reward any worker among you for any work you do, be you male or female – you are equal to one another (3:195)
ALSO, do you know how much Islam values women? Our Prophet, Muhammad said, “Paradise lies at the feet of mothers”
Narrated Abu Huraira:
A man came to Allah’s Apostle and said, “O Allah’s Apostle! Who is more entitled to be treated with the best companionship by me?” The Prophet said, “Your mother.” The man said. “Who is next?” The Prophet said, “Your mother.” The man further said, “Who is next?” The Prophet said, “Your mother.” The man asked for the fourth time, “Who is next?” The Prophet said, “Your father. ”
[Bukhari :: Book 8 :: Volume 73 :: Hadith 2]
And here’s the interesting part that boggles my mind: The Bible seems to include sayings indicating the inequality of men and women:
“A man is the image and glory of God; but the woman is the glory of man.” (1 Cor. 11:7)
“Husbands, in the same way be considerate as you live with your wives, and treat them with respect as the weaker partner” (1 Peter 3:7)
“As in all the congregations of the saints, women should remain silent in the churches.” (1 Cor. 14:34)
“I do not permit a woman to teach or to have authority over a man.” (1 Tim. 2:12-14)
If you really want to make the claim that Muslim women are “lower than dogs”, then I suggest you provide credible evidence to support that.
Kufar: It is VERY VERY unfortunate and heart-breaking to hear that there are Muslims are killing other people. But you need to remember that their acts do not represent my religion, Islam. That’s called generalizing. If my Christian neighbor were to kill another Christian, do I automatically assume all Christians are murderers? No, that’s plain stupid. I don’t judge an individual based on the acts of their fellow neighbors or brothers and sisters. I’m against Muslims who murder Gay individuals, but no where in the Quran does it say to do that. Following are some passages that teach Muslims to be respectful of other religions:
Sayings of Prophet Muhammad (Peace be upon him):
“Anyone who kills a non-Muslim will not smell the fragrance of the Paradise, even though its fragrance can be experienced at a distance of forty years.” (Al Bukhari).
“He who hurts a Non-Muslim citizen of a Muslim state, I am his adversary, and I shall be his adversary on the Day of Judgement.” (Al Bukhari).
“By God, he is not a true believer, from whose mischief his neighbors do not feel secure.”Prophet Muhammad (Al Bukhari, Muslim).
“Hurt no one so that no one may hurt you. Remember that you will indeed meet your Lord, and that He will indeed reckon your deeds.”
The following is Prophet Muhammad’s charter with Christians in Mount Sinai and around the world…Peace be upon him
“This is a message from Muhammad ibn Abdullah, as a covenant to those who adopt Christianity, near and far, we are with them. Verily I, the servants, the helpers, and my followers defend them, because Christians are my citizens; and by Allah! I hold out against anything that displeases them.
No compulsion is to be on them. Neither are their judges to be removed from their jobs nor their monks from their monasteries. No one is to destroy a house of their religion, to damage it, or to carry anything from it to the Muslims’ houses. Should anyone take any of these, he would spoil God’s covenant and disobey His Prophet. Verily, they are my allies and have my secure charter against all that they hate. No one is to force them to travel or to oblige them to fight. The Muslims are to fight for them.
If a female Christian is married to a Muslim, it is not to take place without her approval. She is not to be prevented from visiting her church to pray. Their churches are to be respected. They are neither to be prevented from repairing them nor the sacredness of their covenants. No one of the nation (Muslims) is to disobey the covenant till the Last Day (end of the world)
Don’t generalize please.

“Allah’s Apostle said, ‘The Hour will not be established until you fight with the Jews, and the stone behind which a Jew will be hiding will say. “O Muslim! There is a Jew hiding behind me, so kill him.”‘”
Ishaq:441
In Sahih Muslim: Book 041, Number 6985:
Abu Huraira reported Allah’s Messenger (may peace be upon him) as saying: The last hour would not come unless the Muslims will fight against the Jews and the Muslims would kill them until the Jews would hide themselves behind a stone or a tree and a stone or a tree would say: Muslim, or the servant of Allah, there is a Jew behind me; come and kill him; but the tree Gharqad would not say, for it is the tree of the Jews.

@ Rumina
I don’t give a flying fork how long you’ve been here. I see all muslims as colonists. Islam has one goal & one goal only and that’s to force sharia law on the world. You, personally, may not actively promote it now but if the fatwa comes down you will. And muslim is NOT a race therefore I’m not a racist, but I am an islamorealist and it’ll be a frosty Friday if you think you can get anything past me. Now piss off and don’t address me again until you’re an apostate..

@ “rumina” And next time make sure you are addressing the correct poster. I did NOT make the statements you attribute to me.
“Never trust a one”.

Kufur: Everything Rumina posted is legitimate and i’ve been taught it as well. What you are referring to is a narration of a battle that will not happen until basically the end of the world. The sun would have to rise in the west and set in the east before what you quoted is applicable. It’s ridiculous of you to pick out one line without knowing it’s context.

I’m not sure what you think a fatwa is. I don’t blame you for not understanding because i’ve only heard that word recently myself. Basically there is no clergy in Islam, no group or leader alive who can issue any religious ruling with absolute authority or immunity from criticism. A fatwa is a religious opinion or clarification from a scholar. It’s their opinion based on what they’ve learned and no Muslim is religiously required to follow. I’m in university and I recognize my professors have more knowledge than I do and I respect that but I don’t follow them blindly. Just like i respect the years religious scholars have spent seeking knowledge but they are human beings and I recognize their fallibility.

The dance hall dripped with good will. I really like to go to The ballroom swing, very relaxed.
