Saturday Night Cinema: Talk Of The Town

3

If someone had told me they could skillfully blend social-crime drama with screwball comedy, I'd have said they were, well, screwy.

Tonight's Saturday Night Cinema offering is an enjoyable little confection featuring a top notch trio: Cary Grant (yummy), Jean Arthur (snappy) and Ronald Colman (classy). The acting is top notch. The dialogue is sharp, fast and funny — something you never get from today's Hollywood tripe.

George Stevens' Talk of the Town is a quick-witted comedy driven by wonderful performances by Cary Grant, Ronald Colman and Jean Arthur. Michael Lightcap (Colman) is a stuffy law professor in line to a Supreme Court appointment, who is spending the summer at the house of schoolteacher Nora Shelley (Arthur). But Lightcap is not the only guest at the house. Shelley has also let Leopold Dilg (Grant)–a man who had recently escaped from prison, where he was serving a sentence for false accusations …

Dog Eater lyrics to the Tune of Hall and Oates – Man Eater
He only comes out at night
To find a tasty bite
Nothing is new, I’ve seen his gaze before
Watching and waiting
He’s sitting with you but eyeing some Basset Hounds
So many to taste and see
Chihuahua fricassee
Dear Leader is wild, but he’s tamed by the taste of a puppy’s tail
Served up on a platter
The school lunches are sure gonna get bizarre
Oh here he comes
Watch out Bo he’ll chew you up
Oh here he comes
He’s a dog eater
Oh here he comes
Watch out Bo he’ll chew you up
Oh here he comes
He’s a dog eater
I wonder if Michelle approves
Fried puppy just won’t do
Poached poodle flan, the One will really rip their fur apart
Mind over matter
TelePrompTer glaze but a beast is in his heart
Oh here he comes
Watch out Bo he’ll chew you up
Oh here he comes
He’s a dog eater
Oh here he comes
Watch out Bo he’ll chew you up
Oh here he comes
He’s a dog eater

The Polish character preparing the borcht said “Mama I’m an American citizen and an American citizen is responsible for everything.” 1:03:00 into the movie. Wow Hollywood wrote that line? An interesting attitude for an immigrant character to portray. That was back when being a new citizen was a point of pride.
There is great political commentary in this movie especially when the two men are at the breakfast table and the ‘gardener’ asserts himself.
Really classy movie.

Delightful! I really loved Ronald Coleman’s speech in the courtroom when he came in with the actual criminal to exonerate Cary Grant.
