Trial begins for terrorist's father who allegedly lied to FBI about son's subway plot NY Post, July 18th Hat tip Pamela Hall
The father of an admitted terrorist who hoped to launch suicide bomb attacks in New York City's subways stood trial today on charges that he lied to FBI agents investigating his son's plot.
Brooklyn federal prosecutors say Mohammed Zazi, 55, deliberately misled federal agents in Sept. 2009 and destroyed chemicals that his son planned to use in the construction of explosive devices.
The father's lies to investigators hampered the progress of a fast-moving federal probe, as "FBI agents across the country were frantically trying to stop a terrorist attack aimed at New York City," Assistant US Attorney Andrew Goldsmith told a jury in Brooklyn federal court.
"He made a choice to obstruct the government's investigation – to make it harder to get the information they so desperately needed," Goldsmith said.
Prosecutors stressed that the father's actions occurred after he learned of the law enforcement probe, and they point out that he is not charged with being a terrorist or knowing about the plan in advance.
His son, Najibullah Zazi, 26, has already pleaded guilty to terror-related charges and is a government informant in the witness protection program.
The son admitted to receiving instruction on how to build explosive devices at an al Qaeda training camp in Pakistan, as part of an effort to launch suicide-bomb attacks with two friends in New York's subways.
One of those friends, Adis Medunjanin of Queens, is awaiting trial for his alleged role in the bomb plot.
The father's defense attorney, Justine Harris, told the jury that Mohammed Zazi is an honest immigrant who came to America, became a US citizen, and worked 12-hour days, six days a week, to provide for his family in an effort to realize the "American dream."

The father was shocked and upset when he learned of his son's plot, Harris said, and never intended to mislead federal investigators.
"Mr. Zazi did not destroy or conceal evidence. He did not lie to the FBI," she said.
What really happened, the defense attorney told the jury, was that Mohammed Zazi is a man of limited education whose command of the English language is – at best – flawed. As a result, he has difficulties communicating "nuance," she said.
"They were misunderstandings and miscommunications. They were not lies," Harris said of Zazi's interactions with the FBI.
More taqiyya. His son planned to blow up the NYC subway system and this enemy stood by him.
The father, who moved from New York to Denver several years ago, also faces separate immigration fraud charges in Manhattan federal court.
To start off the trial, prosecutors put one of Zazi's cousins on the stand who said he was in on the failed plot, saying he had pleaded guilty to charges he helped by getting terror training.
“There are three guys who want to go to Waziristan,” Amanullah Zazi recalled.
As one of the first witnesses, the 24-year-old cousin described how the FBI swooped down on the entire family after the plot unraveled.
He said “Uncle Wali” and other family members recruited him to get rid of chemicals Najibullah Zazi left behind in Colorado. He claimed he also was urged to lie to the grand jury.
The family agreed, he said, “If anybody asks questions, tell them we don’t know nothing."

What a line of BS from Zazi’s attorney. Destroying chemicals that your son is going to use to build bombs transcends all languages. And agreeing to lie to officials about it also transcends all languages. He’s a muzzie, therefore it’s all about the jihad, and he’s used to getting his own way. I hope they nail his ass to the wall, and I hope the whole muzzie terrorist family gets deported back to whatever islamic hellhole they came from. They all thought they could hide out in an apartment building there in Denver’s muzzie central (Aurora,) but they got nailed.
