Ban the Burqa Pamela Geller

Story continues below advertisement

Back in November, I reported on a burqa’ed Muslima in Australia, Carnita Matthews, who was charged with making a false complaint that used the Muslim victimhood card in her defense. “All cops are racist,” she charged — what race? Covered from head to toe in a burqa, with just a slit through which to see, the Muslima claimed that a police officer had tried to tear off her burqa.

It didn’t happen. Matthews was charged with making a false complaint to police. And the judge, Magistrate Robert Rabbidge, saw through her claim right away, describing her lie as “deliberate, malicious and ruthless.” Rabbidge added: “There is not a shadow of doubt in my mind, beyond a reasonable doubt, that she knew that the complaint she was making was false.”

Matthews, predictably, played the race card, saying: “You look at me and see me wearing this and you couldn’t handle it. All cops are racist.”

Her lawyer claimed that Matthews had been a victim of mistaken identity. Because who really knows who was under that burqa? Only Allah can say for sure. But Rabbidge would have none of it. Matthews is the one who lodged the complaint against an officer, and signed a statement to that effect. Police prosecutor sergeant Lisa McEvoy said: “Her signature on that affidavit coupled with the signature on her driver’s licence is exactly the same.”

Matthews was found guilty, and was sentenced to six months in prison. Yet despite the indisputable evidence against her, the burqa’ed civilizational jihadist appealed — and this past week, she won, all the while remaining inside her cloth coffin. A new judge, Clive Jeffreys, bought her claim of mistaken identity, and said that because she was wearing a burqa, there was no certainty that Carnita Matthews was the same woman who falsely accused the police officer. Jeffreys contradicted Rabbidge, saying: ““I am not satisfied beyond reasonable doubt that she made the complaint. Even if I was satisfied that she made the complaint, I am not satisfied beyond reasonable doubt that it was knowingly false.”

The Muslims expressed their gratitude for this in their usual way: it was an ugly scene. Australia’s News.com.au reported: “More than a dozen Muslim supporters linked arms and began chanting ‘Allah Akbar’ as they stormed out of Downing Centre Court with Mrs Matthews concealed behind them. Tempers rose and they began jostling with police after several members of the group attacked cameramen.” Matthews’ dhimmi lawyer Stephen Hopper explained: “They are obviously happy with the result and are expressing it in a way that is culturally appropriate to them.”

Attacking cameramen: “culturally appropriate” for Muslims.

Pam: I agree fully with your reason for banning the burqa.
But there’s another reason for banning it: Some women don’t want to wear it, but they are intimidated into wearing it (and saying that they want to wear it) by certain members of their family or community.
Since at least some cases of women wearing the burqa are against the woman’s will, then we should ban it for all of them.
If they don’t like that, no one is making them stay in the United States. They can leave any time.

I disagree. That will result in many women being forbidden to leave the home.
The solution is not to ban the burqa, but to uphold the freedom of any organization to set its own rules.
That is not the same as a ban, which would violate one’s right to dress as one wishes–even to wear a mask.
The solution is always to uphold freedom. That way, no one gets hurt and all benefit.

People are entitled to wear what they want in any free democracy, however, if we allow these imbiciles to flaunt our laws, and hold us to ransome for their extremist religious demands, and expect our free democracies to hold their backward cults as equal to ours, then we really are to blame. We must ban the covered face at least in free democracies, in voting, working in the public sector, courts, driving and for photo ID, otherwise we are saying that these values are equal to ours, which is insanity. I think it is really going in the wrong direction when in a prairie Canadian city, looking for a fitness center, I ask at each one, do you have a clientle of religious women who cover their heads, and at each one, they simply explain to me, like I am some type of idiot, ‘well of course, they are everywhere now, we must just accept it’ Well I don’t accept it. What happened to the culture that was once Canadian. Are we a mulsim culture now? Is a woman with her head covered so acceptable here that no one even blinks an eye. That we just blindly must accept these frauds who live among us pretending to value gender equality. If that is the case then the next step will be very easy. It makes me cry.
It is not the same as the color of a persons skin. It is not the same as long haired hippies. It is not the same as the mens Jewish beanies, or the Christians sunday bonnets, we all know it is not the same. It is not the same as any of these things. It is the presence of a religion that dehumanizes women and I will fight it with every breath and to my last breath against the invasion of this cult of hate. I will write letters to members of parliament, I will join clubs and forums, I will speak to friends and speak outloud everywhere I go to protest this travesty.
Before our parliament disolved for the election, an MP in Quebec, had a bill that dealt with the banning of the face coverings, and I have been writing the MP’s to find out if they will bring forth another similar bill. This requires support, so I will try to find out who is in favor of legislating against this face covering nonsense and find out when a bill will be brought forward. There is a far larger presence of islamics in Quebec and many Arab speaking people, in fact, a small shoe store in Montreal has been fighting a daily protest of lunatics on the street in front of the store by islamic social terrorists who are attempting to block people from purchasing Israeli products at this store. So Quebec is as big a cesspool as Toronto.
You are a role model to me Pamela. You are amazing.

When I say, “The solution is not to ban the burqa, but to uphold the freedom of any organization to set its own rules,” I of course would expect that all government organizations and procedures would have rules forbidding masks of any kind–especially garb that signifies much more than a mere religion: a total societal system harking back to before the Middle Ages in its primitivism.

In that case how do you feel about a person wearing their Ku Klu Klan robes to work, or how about wearing a swatstica on their arm…? No mortica, Some things are provacative, inapropriate, and dangerous. The Burka is one of those that fall into this catagorie.

“Banning the burka” is rather missing the point with the article above. The problem with the burka, from a simply civil standpoint has to do with identity verification. I am obligated to present proof of who I am when I write a check, often when I use a credit card, when I am stopped by police, when I vote, etc., etc., etc. In this instance the question is whether this woman’s islamic beliefs supersede the established law of the land, i.e. when stopped she has to present ID in such a way as the officer can verify her identity.
I was glad to see the first judge’s ruling was exactly that. However, for the 2nd judge to rule that “I am not satisfied beyond reasonable doubt that she made the complaint. Even if I was satisfied that she made the complaint, I am not satisfied beyond reasonable doubt that it was knowingly false.” is pure idiocy! The whole point, judge, is that there was no way to verify her identity, beyond the evidence at hand: her driver’s license with signature, and the complaint with signature. If a signature is enough to authenticate my mortgage company, none of whom I have met (it’s been sold at least twice), to foreclose my home if I don’t pay, seems that this is enough evidence. Especially considering even the judges haven’t seen her face!!
Now, as to banning the burka as a statement to the culture of Australia (in this case), Canada (for Morticia), and the USA (for our dear hostess), fine, have at it. But the problem is that the issues are becoming entangled. I pray that the USA remains a land governed by law, though it would seem that is going by the wayside. I think it more effective, at least at this point, to address these attempts at wheedling by the law by coming down decisively on the side of rule of law. None of this lefty-waffling, “because it’s their culture” bull. This is MY culture: we in America don’t hide our women away in black, cloth coffins, or kill/maim them to protect our egos! If you want to live here there are laws, live by them. You MUST present PROOF of identity for any number of events or activities. Wearing a burka is no excuse for not presenting proof of identity. period.
Are we a nation ruled by law or not?
‘course which law is a whole ‘nother ball o’ wax.
Then the ribbon on top: Matthews’ dhimmi lawyer Stephen Hopper explained: “They are obviously happy with the result and are expressing it in a way that is culturally appropriate to them.”
Couldn’t they express it in a way that was culturally appropriate to where they stand: Australia?! What a moron. Would it have been ok if they stood outside the courthouse and shot AK47 rifles up in the air? Based on all the news reports, that would be “culturally appropriate”.

Pamela, I realize as I have posted this that you’re whole point is addressing the “creeping sharia”, thus the call to ban the burka, and Geert’s call to ban the koran, etc.
I just see it as a bit more granular in this case. If we address this idiocy in the tried and true way, rule by law, then the creeping should cease. Of course, that depends on lawyers and judges ruling by law, rather than equivocating, appeasing, and placating. Unfortunately, that seems to be the direction we’re all heading.
Bearing that in mind, props to you all who stand at the street yelling that the emperor’s ass is hanging out. Maybe someday that reality will become more widely known. Till then, keep up the good work.

I agree with you that some costumes are provocative, but in a democracy people must be entitled to wear these offensive costumes. I find the swastica disgusting, but I have also looked at it’s orgin to find out how it was kidnapped by Hitler the Psychopath. If someone wears one that is their business, but if I walk into a store where they are working, or a public venue, and see it displayed, the wrath of Khan would be mild in terms of my reactions. Yet, I know an artist who once had them tatooed all over his body, yes, he is on the fringe, some would say lunatic fringe, and he is far from being a jewhater. The opposite, yet, many of those smiling culturally accepted head covered islamic creepy women, do hate jews, christians and anyone who lives freely, their agenda is kept to themselves and shared with their inside circles, and at their mosques.
They must be allowed to wear what they want, but I don’t think their religious costumes belong in the work world. I would never allow my children to be around anyone wearing their head covered. What a sick role model that is for young girls. They may as well be clitorectomized and have a sign promoting the practice.
Religious costumes have no place in sports, or in the public sector. Canada was bullied and bamboozled years ago by the seiks, before anyone realized what a jar of worms that would turn out to be. Now we must face the consequences of our mounties, rcmp, police, all wearing those ridiculous centuries old rags wound around their heads, with their long disgusting unkemp beards as part of traditional dress the the public is supposed to respect. This is not India, this is Canada or the USA where religion and state are seperate.
Religious costumes must not be accepted in public places in a work situation, to work, or carry out functions in the public arena.
In perticular covering the face as do the kkk or the islamics with their burkhas must be legislated against period. Let the lawyers create all the wording to support this ludicrious situation and hopefully make it happen in all western democracies.
So yes, mr Kuffar, I think people must be allowed to wear what they want, no matter how offensive….However, in a working situation, government, private, public, whatever, we must not allow this creeping sharia to advance itself.

I’m an Australian following this case and this isn’t over yet.Hopefully someone in authority will investigate this more.
The husband? is now claiming that Carnita Mathews has become very stressed over all this.I smell a law suite coming.
Most of the Australian Politicians are gutless so I fear for my country.

Seems “gutless” might be a prerequisite for being a politician.
Oh Noes!! The poor dear is very stressed?!
Maybe she shouldn’t have started this all up in the first place! Guh-friend, you made your bed; lie in it.
