AT least four people have been killed and 15 injured when a bomb exploded on a crowded bus in the Philippine capital's financial district overnight.

Authorities said it was too early to say who was behind the explosion as the bus traveled along one of Manila's busiest roads, but President Benigno Aquino ordered security forces on alert.

And elsewhere across Asia, a bomb exploded in a Thai village killing nine while separate bomb blasts in Pakistan killed another twelve with the toll expected to rise.

In a televised address Mr Aquino said the government had asked the police and military and the intelligence services to review their threat assessment, with the end view of hardening all areas considered under threat,.

"So far the investigation is ongoing, but the mechanical and electrical causes are being ruled out for this explosion. There appears to be an explosive device … we are looking at the terrorist aspect of it," he said.

Metropolitan Manila police chief director Nicanor Bartolome said the bomb appeared to have been placed under one of the passenger seats.

Police initially placed the death toll at two, but later revised it to four after two of the 15 injured people taken to the hospital died from their injuries.

Vice President Jejomar Binay, a former mayor of the Makati financial district, arrived quickly at the scene and said it appeared to be a powerful blast.

"There's a huge hole and the debris indicates it is a bomb," Mr Binay said, adding the legs of one injured woman had been blown off.

Police investigators were seen scouring the scene for evidence, with blood drying on the pavement.

The driver, who survived the attack unscathed, said at least two men who acted strangely quickly got off the bus just moments before the explosion.

"They were moving from one seat to another although we had no idea there was an explosive aboard," the driver, Maximo Peligro, told reporters.

In November, the US, Australian, British, Canadian, French and New Zealand governments updated their travel advisories to the Philippines to warn that terrorist attacks were likely

Some of the warnings specifically mentioned that an attack would take place in Manila.

Meanwhile a bomb struck restive southern Thailand yesterday, killing nine villagers and injuring another two, police said, in the latest violence to hit the insurgency-wracked region.

The roadside device exploded at around 5:30pm local time in a village in Yala province, police said, with all the victims thought to be Buddhists returning home from work.

Islamic insurgents have waged a violent campaign in Thailand's southernmost region bordering Malaysia since early 2004, leaving more than 4,400 people dead, including both Muslims and Buddhists.

Thailand extended emergency rule last week in most of the Muslim-majority region for another three months, despite rights groups' concerns about the powers given to the military.

I spent more than 3 years in Thailand during the Vietnam war and have been all over the country from Udorn to Bangkok, Korat to Changmai and everywhere in between, and I NEVER saw or heard of a muslim. Now, they are doing what muslims do anywhere muslims are, they BLOW SH** UP and murder people. I am surprised the Thais tolerate this conduct and haven’t initiated a pogrom against the FN muslims.

You ask the people in Thailand if Islam is a religion of peace, the answer is sometimes nervous laughter or a straight forward, `no’. The people of Thailand have seen the truth, this is why when the Myanmar Muslim boat people enter the coastal waters, they are given a push off by the Thai navy. Want trouble – import muslims, want peace – deport muslims.

It appears that no one is safe from these heathen infidels. They kill just for the fun of it to instill fear and terror. Talking to an Afghani muslim woman, I was surprised at the fear ordinary muslims have for these insane murderers. Terrorist are using fear to bring all muslims under their banner to increase their membership and finances. Who do these people take their troubles to as they are viewed as the enemy which will eventually drive them all to join this evil force.
