President Donald Trump on Monday signed an executive order imposing “hard-hitting” new sanctions on Iran in response to the downing of an unmanned U.S. drone last week.

“We will continue to increase pressure on Tehran, until the regime abandons its dangerous activities” including its nuclear ambitions, Trump told reporters in the Oval Office.

“We do not seek conflict with Iran or any other country,” Trump added. “I can only tell you we cannot ever let Iran have a nuclear weapon.”

The new sanctions deny Iran Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei and his office access to key financial resources, according to NBC News. Khamenei’s assets are not spared from the new measures. In addition, the U.S. is sanctioning specific military leaders who were responsible for shooting down the US drone last week, according to Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin.

Trump had announced over the weekend his plans to slap additional sanctions on Iran to deter the country from obtaining nuclear weapons. The U.S. already has sanctions on Iran’s oil industry and other sectors.

Tensions between the U.S. and Iran have grown since Trump pulled the U.S. out of the multilateral Iran nuclear deal that had been brokered during the Obama administration. Some sanctions that had been lifted under that deal snapped back into effect after the U.S. pulled out.

Those tensions ratcheted up in recent weeks, following attacks on two oil tankers near the Strait of Hormuz that the U.S. alleges were executed by Iran. Iran denies that it carried out the attacks.

Last Thursday, an Iranian surface-to-air missile shot down an American surveillance drone that the U.S. says had been in international airspace. Iran maintains that the drone was flying in its airspace in violation of international law.

Shortly after Trump signed the order, Mnuchin said that some of the Iranian sanctions were in the works before the drone was shot down. Iran’s Foreign Minister, Javad Zarif, would be sanctioned later this week, he said.

Mnuchin also responded to critics who question the effectiveness of the sanctions.

“We’ve literally locked up tens and tens of billions of dollars,” Mnuchin said in the White House briefing room. “These sanctions are highly effective.”

I have yet to see sanctions force a country to change its foreign or internal policies. Look at North Korea and look at Venezuela. It hampers their military buildup, though. But change? It takes weapons for that.

Losing a drone is much cheaper than a trillion dollar war. I just wish we would completely get out of the mid east and 90% of the other countries we are providing security for. Why should we guard Europe? To protect a eventual Muslim country? It is astonishing the short sightedness and stupidity of Merkel, Marcon and May. The only ones that have any sense are the former communist countries, such as Poland. I think Italy may be waking as well.

Protecting sea lanes for foreign flagged ships taking oil to India and communist china with American blood and treasure seems a bit nuts.

Yes, pinprick sanctions?? …that was weak and laughable.

Not one word about 40 years of Iran’s direct support for its many proxy forces that have attacked in…
>> 1979, The US embassy in 1979. The Iran hostage crisis.
>> 1983, US Beirut embassy bombing.
>> 1986, Beirut Marine Barracks truck bomb.
Both bomb attacks were traced to Hezbollah, a militant Iranian proxy army and political group that originated in Lebanon in 1982. Iranian and Syrian involvement was also suspected.
>> 2000, Iran sponsored the USS Cole bombing.
>> 2003-2011, Iran IED’s sent to Iraq to killed 600 US troops. Pentagon report.
>> 2007-2019, Iran. weapons and support to the Taliban in Afghanistan.
>> 1980 – 2019, Israel with thousands of rockets and missiles.
>> 2016 -2109, Saudi Arabia with dozens of rockets and missiles.

>>>>>> I will not even include the silly drone that Trump sent to shot down. <<<<<<<

Israel and Saudi Arabia are US allies, so there is all the reason you need for all 3 nations to take Iran down. Not the weak tanker bombing, not the drone attack. Both of which were dismissed by our EU NATO allies and the US MSM as possible false flags.

…BTW, A top Iranian general, Qassem Soleimani …just …screwed …up, by publicly acknowledging he directs the many proxy forces Iran funds and arms.

gellerreport.com/2019/05/gutless-iran-hides-behind-proxies.html/

This General, his proxy forces and Iran are now legitimate targets.

….Sooo, 120,000 Troops not required. No invasion is required. No more weak False Flag attacks required. Just demand 100% unfettered inspection of all suspected Iranian nuke facilities …..OR Iran’s loses its oil terminals, anti-ship missile launchers, arms depots, ports and air bases.

….Come on Trump, Iran and its proxies have had 40 years of target practice.
….Now it’s our turn.

We need to recover our monetary loss of the drone. Those things aren’t cheap.
